Cal making fun on Doug

Did any of you see Cal’s impression of Doug Shows making that call when he was extremely animated. You would have thought it was a strike out on the World Series.
But it was just a turnover. But Doug was beyond excited.
I need some one to find this because I missed it.

Apparently the feeling is mutual when it comes to Shows from Cal.

I honestly can’t believe you guys know the names of the refs. I can’t even remember seeing the same ref twice. They are like random pieces of furniture to me. I see them, but I don’t look at them if that makes sense.

That's the way it should be. We just remember the ones who think the fans are there to see them instead of the players.

3. Doug Shows- used to be decent towards us. Now? Seems to call every thing he can st us. (90-37). He’s not awful awful but droning on who he’s with (like a couple others forthcoming) it can be a long night.

4. Doug Sirmons- the two headed snake. He will either leave you alone or make you his whipping boy. He’s horribly inconsistent. Pair him with any of the above (like the 2020 KU game where we had Adams, Luckie, and Sirmons? Shoot me. Guess what. We lost). And he will be a night mare. (48-16, BUT 2-3 out of the last 5).

5. Tony Smoking Grass Greene- I have no clue if Mr. Greene partakes in herbal substances but his head scratching calls make me wonder. Mr. Greene currently holds the active record for officiating the most UK losses at FORTY (there is one worse but he’s retired) But to his credit he’s been decent to us at times. But I never like seeing his name in the officiating crew (104-40)

6. Teddy TV Valentine- On his own is not bad. We usually have good rapport with him. If you get him in a road game though? Gonna be a long night. The man will Lapp up the home crowd and throw out his hip to look good. He call called a charge against us once and it’s a miracle he didn’t throw out his back. Came half way onto 5he court from the baseline to do it. ***. (46-17, but 3-2 of last five).

Those are the worst minder or stil active ones for us, Anthony Jordan is in there too (which he should’ve been fire for posing with his LSU gear before reffing an LSU GAME) and the god awful Roger Ayers (13-12).

BBNCAL - This is the greatest (worst?!) concise list ever compiled to show people just how bad these turds are. Special credit goes to mentioning Rutledge and Clougherty. I loved to heckle the hell out of those two. Loved seeing you mention them because I go back to that era and your comment about Cawood where Clougherty is concerned is pure gold ! lol OMG ! HOW TRUE!!!

Just an AWESOME thread for us old blue hairs as reminders, and a little educating the younger fans at why we feel the way we do about these guys.

Lord, what I would LOVE for us to get a blackball to use against any of these guys officiating a game for us.

They need to make officials salaried and then hold them accountable. HUGE changes to the way college games are officiated - starting with making them all accountable - would go a LONG way to improving the sport. That said, the NCAA is collectively too stupid to understand how much loathing there is nationally to watch a college basketball game when these officials that are universally despised in ALL conferences (and there's plenty more to add to this list). And the NCAA has plenty of money they could use to rectify this situation. There will never be accountability while they don't pay them like employees.

In the last minute of the game you don't make that call, Shows knows damn well the guy was all over Brooks holding him. Him or Pat Adams always have to insert them selves in to the game and manufacture a call, 90% of the time against Kentucky.

For most part I'm the same way.

Which is how it should be. A ref is doing a good job IMO if I don't remember them.

That being said, there's some refs out there that by now you just have to know because of the games we've been involved in with them.

I mean surely you remember Higgins lol.

Karl Hess is the one who was stealing money. Hess would always favor the environment in a UK road game.

Higgins has flat out blind favoritism when we go up against a big opponent. Keeping him away from our games is not coincidental with Emmert.

I just don’t care about the officials. I get as pissed as anyone when they mess up but I still don’t focus at all on the guy in the striped shirt. I can’t imagine why I need to know his name. They are props, like the ball and shot clock. They have a purpose but I have no emotional attachment to them.

You don't really have to focus on them to have some basic recall of names and faces. You're acting like people are weird for rembering names that are said repeatedly throughout every broadcast.

Being a former HS/AAU/D2 college ref, I play closer attention to names. Shows is garbage. There was a period where I felt he missed 5-6 calls in a row for both teams. Back to back. That’s kind of inexcusable from a college ref at that level. He’s either just bad, getting old or he gets too attached to the emotional level of the home crowd usually going crazy when Kentucky comes into town.

He blows to appease the fans. Like he’s the star of the show when really he’s just a fluffer.

I appreciate when an official is willing to point out how bad another official is.

We need more of this, and less of the “protect our own at all costs” mentality that is so pervasive.

This is an honest assessment.

I really have advocated to make officials salaried and put on an administrative accountability and scrutiny system.

I think this is a good article to check out :

NBA referee Dick Bavetta claims accountability and scrutiny are officiating’s biggest changes

One of the most controversial rule changes this year is how the referees call offensive fouls when a player launches himself into the way of defenders. Basically, this is to discourage players from fishing for fouls or flopping in order to get calls. In recent seasons, the fouls would result in free throws, which awarded unfair advantages to teams or made the game longer.

Flopping to get calls would have been a no-no in the 70s, 80s, and even 90s. It may be a basketball move but when a player uses a non-basketball move regularly, it changes how the game is played. It makes it worse rather than better. This proves that technology is not the only factor behind radical changes in officiating. The players’ moves or decisions on the court and how they see loopholes to their advantage are also crucial factors in how games are being officiated today.

We really really REALLY need changes like this, because the college basketball situation is in a woeful state these days. No matter how much they hype March Madness, it's a fundamentally flawed sport.

Every conference has officials that are simply terrible and the fans know it. Just looking at the knowledgeable fans here on our board, and you can see that.

NCAA needs to clean up the officiating mess they have allowed to ruin the sport for the past 30 years. It COULD BE so much better....

When you said that Tony had officiated the 2nd most UK losses, I immediately knew whop was gonna be number 1. I believe his son Tim is carrying on his "stellar" ways.
