Cal: "Allen had to earn this"

You realize Allen got those minutes because Clarke was injured right?
How nice of Cal to give an elite shooter his shot. Yeah right.
What did Clarke & Boston do to earn their minutes?

yes I know that is the only reason that Allen saw meaningful playing time. Just commenting on Allen’s playing time due to cal being ejected. If cal isn’t ejected, we lose rather comfortably. Allen probably sees about 18 minutes of total floor time and scores around 9 points. Coaches matter, really good coaches matter even more and Cal Sucks. It’s what he values in a player and is coaching philosophy that makes that a true statement.

Not to interrupt the hate fest or anything here. By all means, you guys keep it going. But perhaps some of you folks need to go back and watch a couple of those early games where Allen was a total liability defensively, was afraid to shoot, and threw up a bunch of line drive bricks when he did let one go. He had zero confidence and it showed. The other guys were outplaying him and that's why he got buried.

Now, if you want to say the kid would have been given more of a chance if he had been more highly rated, maybe so. But apparently something clicked for this kid against Bellarmine, because he looked like a different player.

Some of you guys are Kentucky player homers too, just for the record, and rightfully so. We want the home state kid to get his shot and do well. We all love the home town kid. But look, sometimes when things aren't going well, the common solution is more about emotion than performance. That's the case with some here.

And some of you folks have decided Cal is enemy. So, he can do nothing right. So, we can't enjoy a win. We have to spin this against the guy we hate in this 10 minutes of our Iives. Sometimes you answer a fool according to his folly and other times you just walk away. Take this for what it's worth.

Here you go...
Wow! We caught a couple breaks, we made a few shots, and we broke the losing streak! Yay! I'm happy for this team. Maybe our fans will stop harassing them now and they can enjoy social media again. And hey, a hometown Kentucky kid was the hero tonight. That's awesome! I hope this performance carries him to more success and the team to more wins. We still have a ways to go and need to win a bunch more games to even get back in the conversation, but it sure feels good to win again. Let's enjoy this road win and hope for more.

Looky there friends. You can actually be happy about a win without throwing shade against everyone you want to attack. Shocking, I know.

Have to respond to this . I see no hate fest whatsoever. But there is no way I’m going to let Allen’s play get graded ( degraded ) in a fashion that is possibly fair but most certainly not fairly or evenly appliedto the rest of the team . I mean what constitutes a “ bunch of line drive bricks “ ? The guy had barely touched the floor .
Here up is the truth . You could take out Allen’s name in your first paragraph and fill it in with almost any of the guys getting major minutes . Yes I’ll state the plainly obvious , at least to most people , especially B Boston. The truth is Allen should have been given a fair chance far far earlier than last night and if you believe something “ clicked “ against Transy and Allens game suddenly changed them ok. It’s my opinion we had an injury at the 2G spot and Cal was forced to give him a few minutes and boom ... Allen does what 9/10ths of this board knew he would do. make enough threes to open the lane and give the offense a fighting chance . About the only break we caught was the 10 million dollar coach was flat out forced to play a guy that he didn’t want to play . Yeah he gave some lip service about minutes but it’s my opinion he was going to be hopelessly buried behind Clark and Boston forever . Or maybe when we were like 4-12 as a team or something else that forced Cals hand . Going to be an unusual time here going forward . 2 mods firmly in the corner of coach Cal concerning the handling of DA . Not you Il wildcat but the other mod insulted me for no good reason . He didn’t engage in debate , question me , or anything of the sort . He went straight to questioning my intelligence .
I hate it that the post game replies on here were not one of happiness and unity , but Cals statement about “ you got to earn it “ was just more BS and A very very bad time to attempt that after DA shining out big time .

One of the best posts I’ve seen, but you will probably get blasted for it, sadly.

Classy, intelligent, thoughtful posts don’t seem to fit in here very much.

He’s our “leading scorer” only because Cal gives him the longest leash and he forks up by far the most shots. But a leading scorer who shoots a hideous 15% on threes and 36% from the field is plainly a liability hurting your offense more than helping.

Any team with a leading score shooting those awful percentages has not been playing the right way.

Hence the team was 1-6.

Tell me about it. Common sense has no place here. I mean people can still hate Cal without sounding like complete loons.

I will say, without being able to prove it, that there’s about a 0% chance Boston is benched the last 12 minutes of the game if Cal is on the sideline. Now maybe he and Allen would have been out there together the whole time, that I don’t know.

All worship the 2-6 UK record.

I don't think anyone is happy with 2-6 record but if you can't be a true fan and appreciate seeing a team grow and improve then do us all a favor and go find something that makes you happy. There's no need for continual griping and complaining.

I'd like to know what Brad Calipari did to "earn" his minutes while he was at UK.

Do you remember the Georgia Tech game ManitouDan? I think Allen's play in that game is what got him benched to begin with. 3 turnovers in 4 minutes and looked outmatched in every way in the D1 game. Look, I commented on his play to my family and said "he looks like he doesn't belong." It wasn't about missing shots. It looked like he just didn't have the ability to be in the game.

Now, I don't have any direct ties to the kid other than I hope he does well like every other kid on the team. He wasn't as highly rated as the other guys, but that doesn't always mean much. One of the lowest rated players in his UK class was SGA. But he ended up being a star because he showed it on the floor time and again.

Look, I'm not saying Cal doesn't give his top rated guys more leash, he does. Sometimes those ratings are just flat wrong. We've seen this play out a few times. But this team does need Boston to be good in order to come close to meeting its potential. Sometimes guys take time to hit their stride. I can think of multiple recruits who failed in November November and December but figured it out later. Recently it was PJ Washington. (His freshman season)

Having said all this, I couldn't be happier for the guy or the team. I just don't feel the need to bash the coach while celebrating this win or cheering on this Kentucky kid. Cal even admitted after the game that he probably should have been playing Allen more. That's a small amount of humility, at least.

By the way, it's also going to be interesting going forward on a UK message board with such a large percentage of folks have written off the coach and have decided he can do little right, and who cheer his getting thrown out of games and believe his assistant is a better coach for the team. That's gonna be tough to moderate. But I'm a patient guy and the other mods here are as well. And just for the record, there is no moderator con-fab where we all decide what we should believe. I'm just a fan who posted here for years and was asked to help when help was needed because I seemed to someone to be somewhat reasonable. I took that as a huge compliment and accepted the unpaid position.

People have written off the coach because he clearly puts the NBA draft in front of UK. Yeah, his stubbornness and bench coaching are issues for sure, but the fact that he does pro days, favors NBA draft guys and prioritizes the NBA over UK, are the real reasons people are souring on him.

If he does another pro day, I will never respect him again and the word "hate" will start flying off my keyboard.

Despite what some of the defenders of Cal might argue. There is no way Cal plays Allen over Boston last night in OT if he’s still on the sideline. We’ve seen it too many times. In fact in regulation Bruiser pulled Allen after I think he hit his 4th 3 to take the lead and I commented that Cal must have texted Bruiser to pull him. Because that’s a textbook Cal move. Thankfully it was brief. The truth plain and simple is that Cal does not have the best interests of Kentucky basketball as the first priority anymore. If he ever did.

yes I recall the Ga tech fiasco . Allen was poor , but nearly the entire team was putrid . You saw a small amount of humility in coach ..,. i saw the opposite . The coach stated “ he had to earn it “ that’s insulting to my intelligence and goes towards a long multitude of back handed swipes that Cal has taken at the fans . So was this a some pay back from all of us that got a large degree of validation last night ? Yep sure was .
But I’ll state it here plainly. We are stuck with John Calapari . He isn’t going anywhere l I hope he starts valuing the type of player D Allen Is . And stop losing games trying to groom OAD players that are not performing . I guess what I’m saying is give everyone NEAR the same leash . I’ve coached many years , I fully get stars get leash . It’s understood . But you need to show you are a star to get the leash . And I don’t mean some silly 5 star designation by the show companies . Il Cat and John — I wouldn’t want your job on a good day m let alone these times . It isn’t going to get better. Coach isn’t going to change and while we will improve we are in a bad way because of our start . Our 100 year worst type bad start. And we lose last night if Coach doesn’t get the exit. You think he sets Boston thru 2 Ots ?

Yeah, if Allen's performance in the GT game can be defined as poor, what should we call Boston's performances in 8 straight games now? He is shooting 15% from 3pt range and is shooting fg's at a 35% clip. That is ridiculously bad and since he shoots the ball so much, you have to come to the conclusion that he literally cost us several games.
We have been in a few dogfights where we were right on the doorstep and he would shoot bricks on 2 or 3 straight possessions. Some resulting in easy buckets for the other team.
I don't care how bad Allen's defense is, when you can score the ball like he can, you will still be a + player.
Has Boston been a + player in any game this season? I dont believe so. I want Boston to snap out of this funk, but he was playing ME ball in those games and there is no way Cal gave him the green light to do that.

“Either way, Allen got his shot and did great so I'm happy. Plus we won. That to me is better than I told you so or whatever it is people on here sometimes celebrate above wins.“

Except I was never one to say I told you so. Had never seen DA play other than the few minutes he’s had prior to last night plus madness. He did have a bad few minutes in the one game where he was given a bit of a chanc

But I have seen how Cal has treated kids like him in the past. There’s absolutely nothing that could make me think that Cal put him in last night because of anything other than fan pressure. If the Cats had even been 4 and 3 instead of 1 and 6 I’m not seeing it. And without Clarke’s bad ankle Doubt it as well.

Really doesn’t matter, as you say the win is the most important thing..

But things are out in the open now. We all have seen that the kid CAN shoot and can help the team. We also saw that while he may not be a great defender he didn’t look “lost” out there which was the Transy report.

Cal is too enamored with his man to man with 5 stars who came from AAU and do not know Jack about defense.
But , a pure shooter like Allen should always have opportunities for playing tlme bc he can spread the floor and open up the inside.
Let’s just hope it is not too late.

Agree that national ranking and AAU performance has always earned automatic starting spots for Cal’s Freshmen

Well, I just lost more respect for Cal. He can't admit that he was wrong in burying this young man on the bench. Are you telling me he hasn't been showing these skills in practice all along? Are you telling me this guy hasn't been a shooter since day 1? Effing Bravo Sierra.

Cal's ego is to big to ever admit he's wrong. Allen had forgot everything he had ever done in high school. He didn't know how to shoot, even though he averaged 40 points per game in high school. Think about it! Allen probably had two or three players guarding him in high school games, but he had forgot how to shoot once he got to college. It's easy to blame the kid, when you can't see the forest, for the trees. You can bet, Allen was filling it up in practice, but he is not a 5 star, like the others. I have always said, and still believe, "Cal cannot judge talent." He just goes by what the scouts say about them, and how many stars they give the player.

Unfortunately, RR has become a venue for the angry and disaffected to try to build themselves up and feel better about themselves by tearing down public figures that are successful in their fields. Cal in this case. Rational BBN thinks that this season is a terrible disappointment, but, overall, the program is in good shape and Cal is the best person to be the coach. RR is in danger of becoming another fringe dumping ground for the unhinged. What next, Cal is wearing looser clothes in order to hide the scales of his lizard skin? Fire Cal and hire Q?

-bruiser pulled allen @ 5 minute (ish) mark...and got him back in at the under 4 T.O. he was resting him. It worked.
Yeah after all those minutes DA had logged in the game he was obviously in need of a blow Good thing his second wind lasted for 13 minutes from that point.

Rafters has turned into trash. Did you know last year, where we won the SEC by 3 games, were top ten, had sophomore immanuel quickley as the SEC player of the year, had junior Nick Richards, and was the greatest FT shooting team in UK history (are making your FT important in college bball? How many more championships would we have under Cal if we shot FT better?), and won virtually every big stage game they played had absolutely no chance of making any noise whatsoever in the NCAA tourney and was an indicator that Cal doesn’t favor upper classmen or shooting and is a sign of the horrible trajectory of UK bball? Did you know the year before where we ran our offense through PF PJ Washington and wings Herro and Johnson and lost in OT of the elight eight shows that these are dark times for our program and that Cal won’t adjust to personnel?

Some of the narratives and trash talk spewed about our program and coach from our own fans would make a Louisville fan blush. I’ve been on this board since 2001 when Katman 2000 was making Tubby videos and don’t remember this board being so unreadable. And the negative fans are so LOUD AND AGGRESSIVE. They will come at you if you try and be positive, and they are so confident about their OPINION. Where are all the moderate fans supposed to go? You’re better off moderating a trash dump.

I welcome any and all positive postyou wish to make . Long as you respect that we are pretty much glass half full glass half empty type environment right now . You can brag about last year or 2 years ago but I don’t think we were in a great spot to make a run. Hagans situation was serious trouble , and losing to Auburn because ofthe same issues we always have - stagnant offense -isn’t signs Cal is adjusting . but I don’t mind you seeing it differently

I'm not going to argue this point much longer, but I will add this: there is a difference between a guy looking the part (which Boston does) and just not making shots versus a guy who looks completely lost, can't guard a sign post, and doesn't even seem to belong on the floor with other D1 players. Allen didn't just play poorly in his short stint in that Ga Tech game, he looked inept. That's primarily why I think he got benched.

Now, having said this, he looked like a different player last night. Last night he looked like the guy who averaged 42 per game and won Kentucky Mr Basketball. Last night he looked like a guy who could change the entire complexion of this season for the team. Cal said in his pregame comments that it appeared a light came on (my paraphrase) for Allen in that private scrimmage versus Bellarmine. I haven't seen practices so I don't know if this has been starting to happen for some time or not. I do know this: the kid has not played live basketball since January of 2019, so it shouldn't shock anyone that he had to get the cobwebs out of his head and his play. I sure do hope that is the case and he's now ready to go.

Why do you keep saying Bellarmine even after people have corrected you?

Once again, the scrimmage was against D3 Transylvania, not Bellarmine. Given that you can’t keep straight what team we played, I’m a bit skeptical about the accuracy of your “paraphrasing“ here.

And I find the claim dubious regardless. The kid averaged 42 ppg in HS and hit seven threes in his first college game where he was given real minutes. He did not forget how to play in between those things until magically “a light came on” in an informal scrimmage with a Division 3 team.

Funny how your 5 star busts like Vanderbilt, Gabriel, Skal and Brooks never had to go through that, huh Cal? Why was Allen playing the same minutes your son, Mr. "Earned Not Given", the guy as skilled in playing as you are in coaching, had? Is it because he's not a five star and he doesn't want to use Lexington as a 6 month pit stop on his way to G-league, so you can promote your one & done crap?

Funny, Allen had to earn it while Clark and Boston didn’t. They were handed their time. Corrected the title a bit.

I’m glad i was alive to witness the greatest turnaround in basketball history . D Allen Was the worst player in the history of D1 ball in 4 minutes of playing time versus Ga tech , then became a star 2 weeks later . Maybe we should scrimmage an NAIA team every few weeks to uncover any other hidden gems that are hidden in our roster ? Of course I’m being silly to make a point . Allen was the same guy a few weeks ago as he was last night. He simply got forced into action because of injury , not any coaching decision at all. I’m beyond thrilled for him personally and for the team getting a W it desperately needed

OLD STOLL FIELD GUY!
Cal needs to hire Bob Gibbons to go on the road with Justus to evaluate players. Something has to change. One question I have is why didn’t Cal go after the Nembhard kid that went to Gonzaga? Anyone that knows basketball could see the kid was a player. I will tell you why. He wanted to protect Boston, Clark and Askew and not derail their chances to get to the NBA. Nembhard would have started for us and Askew could have been brought along at a nice pace. But that’s not the way it works in Cal’s world. UK is second fiddle. A really good point guard is what this team needs. He would have been it. Mitch needs to sit down with Cal and have a come to Jesus meeting with him. Cal needs to be sternly reminded who his employer is. The greatest program in the history of college basketball. Personal problems aside where is Pitino when u need him?

Honest question, are you seeing black helicopters outside, or wearing a tinfoil hat?

You know what they say about assumptions.... Fact is he said was going to play all week and he did. No providing cover, you act scared of the truth.
What a dumb reply.

They are trying to defend him for the same reason Cal is going on with his nonsense, trying to save face and not admit they’re savior was wrong and they were wrong for defending every breathe he breathes.
I believe the phrase is “doubling down”, and they look shamelessly pathetic doing it!

Just man up and stop the foolishness already!

Ridiculous. Pour yourself another bourbon.

Cal did at least make one wise comment tonight. He said post-game that after Allen's performance, he has no choice now but to play him more. He went on to say that other players who were playing ahead of Allen now should be playing behind him. I can only hope he's finally seen the light and will give Allen a ton of Boston's minutes and some of Clarke's as well. If he had to prove to Cal that he could play, I think he's now done that.
I will believe that when I see it.

I don't think anyone is happy with 2-6 record but if you can't be a true fan and appreciate seeing a team grow and improve then do us all a favor and go find something that makes you happy. There's no need for continual griping and complaining.
A poster griping because other posters are griping about being 2-6. Can’t make this up.
