is this a good idea to have Cooper DeJean playing on offense ?

I think Phil Parker would pitch a fit if they give him snaps on offense. You only have to go back to the last regular season game to see what he means to the team with just the CB and punt return duties. He doesn't get cheap shotted against Nebraska...we are getting slaughtered in the B10 championship game.

Would he be an awesome player on offense? Most likely. Could it have a negative effect on the defense and/or Cooper? Imo, yes.

I know it's been awhile, but there was a time when football players played offense, defense AND special teams. Even in the two-platoon system we've seen the occasional player who has participated on both offense and defense. Anybody can get hurt on any play. Using DeJean intelligently on offense for 8-12 plays a game would only make sense to me. You have an athlete like that, you probably should make the most of him. IMHO, of course.

I think Iowa will be good either way...
but...
Shohei Ohtani is an example of somebody that can do what is "not common" in Major League Baseball.

so also.. I think.. its possible to use Cooper DeJean in a way that can help the Hawkeyes get the lead... by playing him sparingly on offense... and then help the Hawkeyes keep the lead... by playing him on defense.

of course... DeJean has also been our Punt Returner.

so... I do believe there is a way to maximize this guy's talents to help the Iowa Hawkeyes gain an advantage in all 3 phases... but.. if its going to be done.. its got to be methodical.
meaning.. there has to be guys ready to step in and step up.. to help give him rest when he needs it.

perhaps unlikely to happen... but not out of the realm of possibility.

"Cooper DeJean is an absolute freak of nature"

5-8 Snaps a game on Offense would not negatively impact him. Half of those snaps he could be used as a decoy. Would Phil P. be agreeable? Doubtful.
With more true offensive weapons on the field at the same time its hard to pick which one you will be able to neutralize. Makes all of them more dangerous on any given play.

Who was the cb/wr for OSU back in the early 2000’s? Doubt he plays as many offensive snaps as him but he was dynamite on the field.

Getting him 5 offensive touches a game could mean playing him 8-10 plays on offense a game.
That adds up- plus if he is returning punts you’re adding another 3-4 plays. Could be done- probably won’t,,, but I’m a believer in maximizing your teams strengths I would definitely have a 3rd down package for him.He obviously doesn’t have to get the ball every time he is in the game, just having him in the game stretches the defense mentally and physically

There wasn't an option for 'it depends' so I went with yes. My point being that if the offense can sustain drives and stay on the field, DeJean can definitley have an impact. If the defense is logging heavy minutes due to 3 and outs, then I would lean towards no as even a freak athlete like DeJean will wear down playing a lot of snaps. I guess he could be used situationally but for this offense that has meant being the ultra predictable jet sweep guy.

If he is used as a decoy and only a decoy as i suspect KF would use him, then he might actually make the offense worse as there would now be 11 defenders defending 10 guys. Everyone would suspect he was just a decoy and about 3 plays would confirm it.

ok.. if 11 defenders are defending 10 guys and leaving Cooper DeJean wide open... throw the ball to Cooper DeJean.

decoy for a touchdown !

throwing a TD pass to an open receiver??

I’m guessing they’d be ok with that 😂
The Dog has entered the portal and transferred to O3. I could see wildcatting CDJ and using him as a receiver. Only need to learn a handful of plays because we wouldn't open the entire offense to him. It would be great national recruiting PR I think.

Hard to think CDJ would have a problem playing a few offensive snaps. He's a freakishly good athlete. Plus high football IQ so he could pick up a small package of plays. Use him like above, and then send him streaking on a couple of plays just to see if the D keeps up.

Have him drop behind Cade and throw from the WR position. Have Cade run a little option with CDJ having the option to run or throw. Wildcat him with a run throw option. Small package, mostly all from the same couple of positions (WR/QB) and starting spots when the huddle breaks. This staff surely knows we need some new and creative thinking. You can still run the clock down to 2 seconds just throw some previously unseen stuff at the D when the ball is snapped.

Plus, and this cannot be over emphasized, couldn't the Iowa offense use some good PR for creativity right about say...now?
