I wanted Haarms just to have the "bird in hand", but honestly thought he was a touch of an odd fit. Cal really never has a slower, average athletic super tall big man. I believe he would prefer a quicker, athletic big. There are still some better options out there, the so called "bird in bush". Hopefully, we get one.

It’s not a hard sell for Mark Pope. A freakishly tall white guy can relate to another freakishly tall white guy as his coach. He could sell him on developing him better because he’s already been through the process as a player and as a coach. Mark was also a player here once. He could’ve gotten in his ear about some of the drawbacks playing at Kentucky.

For whatever reason, I think Haarms just felt more comfortable with BYU’s coaching staff. As it said in the article, he wasn’t looking for the glamour of locker rooms or facilities. He just wanted to get to work playing ball. At U.K, under our current system, that’s kind of hard to do because we spend 2-3 months on the fundamentals with the freshman. It’s hard to form a cohesive unit in that short amount of time. Maybe he just felt that the Dynamics of overall team chemistry would be better at BYU. We do have some hot heads coming through the program recently and BYU is more low key. Their players know that college ball is the last stop in their career. And let’s face it, Mark Pope is a really good coach. He has BYU in a good spot and he just out recruited Calipari. Mark is on the up and up. It’s not like he chose Clappy over Cal.

I think we all see that Cal and our current staff aren’t as “cool” in the eyes of the high school recruits as they were from 2006-2017. Things change with the flow of time and I think something can be said for how mentally soft some of the recent players have been with not being able to handle Cal’s coaching lately. They just bolt and run instead of bunker down and talk things out.

They dynamics of modern culture, modern basketball, and modern coaching are changing. We used to hang our hat on team chemistry and expecting the team to come together, but lately, that has not been happening. We’ve had some outside distractions in the last 2-3 years making it even harder on Cal to form a cohesive unit with all young players in 5 months time. Just my 2 cents.

Weak. Show the NBA at 7ft3 you can block 6ft2 guys in a **** conference if you get out there enough with 4 bigs on the rosters including 6ft10 and 6dt11 guys that followed Pope. UK has a need for a big desperately, but not a guy like this. What a joke.

Don't worry, caneintally and bucsrule have contingency rosters drafted
Always good to have a plan B. Or is this plan C or D at this point?

All jokes aside Cal will figure something out, hell just play small ball no defense. Have every game played in the upper 80s and 90s.

How do we know Harrms backed off UK and it wasn't Cal backed off Harrms?
It very well could of been the case Cal told him about who we have coming in and he might of felt like he wasn't going to get the minutes he wanted to showcase his "NBA" skills.
I'll wait to see the final roster before I pass judgement on the kid or our staff.

"But Haarms, who saw his production diminish this past season and left Purdue in search of an opportunity for an increased role, spurned two of the current giants in college basketball to head to Provo."

We never had a good fit in a guy who was trending DOWN at Purdue. His role would NOT increase here.
Those of you who are doubting whether Haarms would make much difference at UK find good support in Bozich's column today - and those demoralized by this miss should read it to feel better. Makes good points.

I do know that if Haarms came to Kentucky, he would rank behind Daniel Orton, Josh Harrellson, Dakari Johnson and Skal Labissiere among the best big men to play for the Wildcats in the John Calipari Era. There is no reason to mention the other former Calipari bigs.

So, I’ll say it one more time, I don’t know why everybody is fussing about Matt Haarms.

Sounds like a little jab at Cal in the article that he doesn’t care how nice the locker room is. Although, anyone who thinks Pope will better prepare him for the NBA, may need his head examined.

But since he never visited that was never going to play out anyway. He seems to attach himself to Pope and relationships are an important part to one's last year playing. I don't think he wanted the pressures in his last year.

If he wants to get to the NBA, he should play against the best competition he can in order to get better prepared and that is definitely not BYU; that is a big time joke- I live on the west coast and nobody will see you play in that conference unless you are a tremendous player- good luck playing in Europe

The irony to that is much like Humphries who left here to go play in the Australian League, Haarms, who is from Amsterdam, would be practically be going home if he plays in Europe.

Next year this time some big man will transfer from University X, Y or Z and we will be back here moaning and groaning again. Welcome to NCAA basketball. This is part of the deal now.

These will probably be more of the norm as time goes on for sure.

I was just about to say, are we starting the Silva watch now?
I say let’s roll with who we have and let the bigs play through their mistakes. At least they won’t be looking over their shoulder if they goof up. Only reason for another big is depth. Sometimes bigs don’t want to play on a guard /forward dominated team because they want the offense run through them, I’m sure alt of folks on here know that but are just upset at the moment because UK lost their big man target.

As long we win, I don't care. Fast paced games are more fun to watch. Not sure we'll have the depth for that style, though. And Cal will have ulcers if we don't sit on the ball with a 6 point lead with 11 minutes to go

Bottom-line....most kids don’t have what it takes to compete at the Kentucky level. That’s just the way it is. They have to trust the staff. I think Cal’s track record for big guys speaks for itself. Sounds like BYU told him he can do whatever he wants and they will adjust to fit him. Makes sense for a program like that to give in. That won’t ever happen with Calipari or Kentucky.

Banchero is headed to Gonzaga ...
Just like Haarms was waiting on a gonzaga player to leave? I get so tired of you zags fans coming over here clamoring about how every player on the west coast is coming to gonzaga just to lose in the elite 8 time and time again.

Let's all insult him because we can't stomach the thought of Kentucky getting out-pitched.
lol at least their coach is a very likable ex uk champ. i don’t see the normal signs of a meltdown. the momentum is too weak.

besides, the recruiting pool has a new deep end with the ncaa lifting reclass restrictions. there’s potential out there.
