to come to starkville for basketball:

"But here's an issue for us. When I used to work at Kentucky you could get just about anybody to play you. At Mississippi State, if we go to Kansas, North Carolina, UCLA or some of those type schools, we are going to have a harder time getting them to come back here (to Starkville). And we are very rarely willing to do a non-conference game at a home site if they won't return a game here. That would have to be a very special set of circumstances"

But there is a lot of truth to that. I know that we will eventually get that big home game, but I'm sure that we will have a rebuilding year when we get it though.

just play them at their place and try to win. Get your name out there. It would probably be better for the program than getting a lower tier team for a home and home.

mind us playing 2 games against the real big boys at their place every year. i mean if we take care of business in the conference games and the gimmes then we're gonna win around 18 or so games at least. if you have a high rpi, then you're gonna get in the tourney with 18 wins with the way the ncaa chooses the teams now (according to the ncaa committee, see arizona '09).

Continue with status quo and keep beating up nobody's and choke it out in March? Keep doing the same schedules so we can keep being an 8 or 9 seed and face a top 5 team in the 2nd round?

Give us some answers here...in theory, we are trying to improve the program and elevate our status...how do we do that continuing with an OOC schedule Delta State could play?

we had a home and home with Oklahoma. We may not be able to get Duke, UNC, Kansas or UCLA home and home, but we should be able to get Florida State, N.C. State, Oklahoma State, Missouri - good solid teams that compete for the same conference titles as Duke, UNC or Kansas.

is that you have constantly said that we can get anyone to come to Starkville. That is obviously not the case. I also told you that we were not going to play one-off road games with no return game. Byrne confirmed that.

I said we should try, but if we have to go on the road for a couple of big games, then by all means do it a few times.

You can tell me all you want about not playing teams that wont return the game- my question to you is what do you propose as the solution?

I think the problem is that the big boys see us as a trap. We are in like the top 30 in NCAA appearances in the past 10 years( I dont recall what it was but it was pretty high) but get minimal recognition. Also, the kicker is that if a UNC comes to Starkville and win then "YAWN, they beat lowly Mississippi State, but if they lose then it will be all over sportscenter. The whole going to Mississippi to play ball also plays a part in the decision.

In short, the risks far outweigh the benefits for the big boys, but I believe the media has played a huge part in that. I agree with 615dawg though, we still should be able to get good solid teams to come.

Don't start the "poor little us" ****.

And I have a hard time believing most anyone would go to Lexington without a return game. I imagine most schools from major conferences feel like we do.

....the big names in basketball won't play us for the same reason we won't play USM in football.

he's saying Kentucky can get home and home with anyone, not get home games only. Kentucky can get UNC, Duke, UCLA to come to Rupp, and they'll go in the road in kind. Mississippi State cannot get those type teams to come in here, and we will struggle even getting the next tier of teams to come here.

The reason power conference teams won't come here is the exact same reason we don't play USM in football. They have nothing to gain and everything to lose.

Probably more than anybody would be willing to spend for a non-conference basketball game.

how would you feel if your four non-conference games were home versus Northwestern State, and then on the road to Ohio State, UCLA, and Miami?

We went to Oklahoma the first year then they postponed the return game by a year, if I recall, but they did get the return game in. I do know that for a fact. We also had a home-and-home with Brigham Young around that same time.

I never said you should play all of them. Plus, there are far more games in basketball, and you know that. But I do think it would be great for our program's visibility and prestige.

A) The SEC in football is the best in the nation- can't really be disputed
B) The SEC in basketball is about the 5th strongest conference (tied with Pac-10 for 5th in FF appearances the last 10 years)
C) OOC games in basketball are basically half the schedule, football- only 1/3
D) Nobody is saying play most of your OOC games on the road- just a couple
E) We have played the 10th weakest schedule in the SEC the last 10 years, and are 51-82 vs the top 50- shouldnt we try a new approach?

in 96 and the return game was in 1998. We played them in New Orleans in 2003. We won all three games.

why on earth would we want to play more games aGAINST them? Aren't we trying to put ourselves in position to win?

What do you think the BCS rankings are? Pretty sure a loss, albeit to a ranked team on the road, would damage your "seeding", as it were. Whereas just pounding a bunch of nobodies and then winning the SEC outright will take care of it's own business.

to elevate our status and get better players. What we have done for the last 11 years hasnt worked.

Whats your solution to a better RPI each year?

so give us a game against Ohio State and I'll gladly play it. Hell, win and we damn well might make the BCS. It can't hurt really. And in basketball, it means so much less if you lose. I see no reason not to replace some no name scrub team at home with a road game in Chapel Hill if you think you can win.

everybody wants to make stupid comments, but nobody wants to offer a solution.

We are 51-82 because a) our coach can't consistently beat good teams or b) we need to recruit better players

Playing the Duke's, UCLA's, and Louisville's of the world will get you better players. Players want exposure. Players want to be on TV. Players want to go to the NBA

aGAIN, what we have done isn't working- where is your solution?

that would raise it, regardless of the schedule.

Your theory that somehow playing a harder schedule somehow equates to a better NCAA tournament run is ridiculous. Here's the 1995-1996 non-conference schedule.

Quick note, I gleaned all of this info from http://www.phys.utk.edu/sorensen/cfr/cfr/CBM/1995/CBM_1995_Team.html, and I'm pretty sure the number I am saying is RPI is actually RPI. If not, sue me. That being said, the last number in the line is what I am saying is RPI.

G 1 11/25 1995 R H W 121-78 ( 15 - 12 215) Southeast Louisiana
G 2 11/28 1995 R H W 77-54 ( 13 - 16 158) North Carolina Wilmington
G 3 12/ 2 1995 R H W 79-74 ( 15 - 13 94) Brigham Young
G 4 12/ 5 1995 R H W 123-73 ( 11 - 16 276) Troy State
G 5 12/ 9 1995 R H L 68-70 ( 23 - 7 76) Arkansas Little Rock
G 6 12/16 1995 R A W 72-69 ( 12 - 15 101) Southern Mississippi
G 7 12/19 1995 R A W 66-60 ( 16 - 14 167) Louisiana Monroe
G 8 12/29 1995 R B W 76-62 ( 4 - 23 177) Oregon State
G 9 12/30 1995 R B W 69-66 ( 21 - 14 47) Nebraska
G 21 2/10 1996 R A W 76-71 ( 17 - 13 50) Oklahoma

Two top 50 teams, only one of which made the tournament (Oklahoma).

plays UCLA every year, twice. North Carolina State plays Duke and North Carolina every year, twice. Depaul plays Louisville every year, twice. Where are their dynasties?

How is not working? We win a ton more than we lose, we win division, conference, and conference tournament championships. We have made the NCAA tournament 6 times this decade. The fact that we haven't won a national title doesn't mean what we are doing isn't working. The solution is to win one more game in March that we have in the previous 6 trips. The solution isn't to put a probable loss on the schedule in December.

Three points and I'm done with you:

First, there is no guarantee that playing UNC in Chapel Hill will get you better players. None.

Second, Stans has recruited very well during his tenure. He has, unfortunately for y'all, lost some to the NBA. That will not be the case going forward.

Third, the state of Mississippi is on the verge of having its deepest talent pool of high school seniors ever. Now is not the time to take the chance to show them that your school can't compete against UNC at their house. If history is any indication, he will get his share of them. And like I said, the NBA is not an option now.
