How can a coach at a high level school like UK be this bad at recruiting? It's really bizarre.
He was a redshirt junior. According to every article I’ve seen, he’ll be a grad transfer.

Thought this kid would end up in Lex but not looking that way, it’s going to be an interesting 2 wks for sure. I know we are going to whiff some but can’t whiff on everyone like last year.
This season is sink or swim for Pope. They'll be a new AD when next season ends. If it's someone from outside the UK family, and I'd be shocked if it isn't, they're going to want their man coaching the team.
How every portal season goes “Stud, heavy lean towards UK” then Pope has zoom meeting. “X school is now favorite for stud player.”
I would love to hear Pope on a Zoom call with Fox sitting on his lap:
He either can’t relate to kids the way that the players are accustomed to playing AAU and High School and they don’t feel like they can talk to him.
Maybe he is Tom Crean creepy, but Creen did kiss his way to some good recruits. (Cheerleader, Always Mr. Positive)
Does he talk about the players development, does he watch tape of the kid before calling him, does he ask about his grades, his education options at UK. Or just a straight out pleading for the player to come to UK and get a lot of money. No talking about development but more smoke and mirrors on this offense that could be good if we had the right players.

i get he is highly rated in the portal. but is he really a good fit for the stuff pope wants to do? love his defense and intangibles but his last 3 years at SDSU:

That’s the problem, he said he got who he wanted last year, of course he was actually talking about the players that actually said yes to him. He missed on a lot of good players last year.

It's almost like he isn't being recruited by anyone to be a big time scorer. Defensive guy that isn't bad on offense.

Tend to agree here. Any highly ranked player in the portal is probably getting 3M.
Next year’s roster has at least 2 but no more than 4 guys that’ll approach or exceed that 3M number. Do you want Byrd to be one of those guys? I could see arguments for and against, largely dependent on whether you think Pope will go on a whiffing spree elsewhere
Correct. It’ll be like NFL FA with a lot of commitments very quickly since many guys have made their upcoming free agency well known.

It's easier if you prepare your mind to expect disappointment. That way, on the off chance that Pope does something good, it's a pleasant surprise.
I believe so. It was like 30-45 day window so at least now you will know who’s in or out versus dragging it along.

You can't outwardly say you're targeting anyone before the portal opens. It's tampering. Everyone's doing it. No one can admit it. I know KSR has posted "Kentucky expected to be interested..." But there won't be any real/great information until the portal opens on April 7th.
So, yeah, maybe we're making Byrd a big priority and he hates Mark Pope.
Maybe he wants way more NIL than he's worth.
Maybe Pope has a bigger fish lined up.
Maybe Kentucky was never that interested.
You guys can do what you like. I'm 100% not going to get worked up over portal "news" before the portal even opens.
