He should have a plaque explaining his ban from baseball and the ban should continue. However, what he did on the field is what should put him in the Hall of Fame. Did he ever bet while playing or was it just when he was managing?

he has owned up to the gambling.

/I cant remember if he has or not.
//The current roid issue has hurt the game more than his gambling ever did.

It's a quality issue. Baseball was almost killed in 1919 by the Black Sox, and fortunately for the game, that the next year Babe Ruth really became baseball's biggest star and saved the game.

I know Rose didn't bet against his team or tank games, but it's the threat of someone else doing it that is the problem. If you let Rose get away with it, you have to let anyone else get away with it to.

At the same time, if Rose has anything in his corner, it's the fact that he didn't bet against his team or do anything to tank games.

That is by far the greatest threat to sports at any level. The steroid scandal doesn't even come close.

As far as when he bet, the Dowd Report, if I remember correctly is from games where he was a manager only. However, he retired as a player/manager in 1986 and I find it hard to believe that he didn't bet on games when he was playing, although no evidence exists of that that I am aware of.

If you've got a closer who badly needs a rest day but you've got a 1-run lead in the 9th and $50,000 down on the game, what are you going to do? You're going to use him anyway, to the long-term detriment of the team. Just because he only bet on his team to win doesn't mean it didn't hurt the team.

on the plaque even. But as a player, he should be in. As a manager, he can be banned. Those are almost two separate careers.

Buy! And I have 4, 256 reasons why. Nobody will ever break the Major League Hit Record that he owns.

Pete has admitted that he lied, when he denied betting on baseball, and now should be where he belongs, Cooperstown, NY in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.

He should be in. The hall is there to honor the greatest players to play the game, and they are not doing that by keeping him out. Just my opinion.

Even if Selig does lift this ban they still have to bank on the writers to vote for him.

Aren't the HOF and MLB two separate entities? If so a ban from MLB should not mean ban from the HOF. I may be wrong but I believe I have heard that somewhere.

His time on the writer's ballott expired. He would have to be put in by the veteran's committee now.

Yes, they are separate but the HOF has decided not to consider anyone who is banned from baseball. So has the Veteran's Committee.

Nothing can ruin a league quicker than gambling. Gambling by players and managers will lead you down the wrong path of fixing games. The worst thing is when fans are questioning the legitimacy of the outcomes, which is where gambling leads. What separates WWF and UFC? One is fixed and the other isn't.

When you have guys like Hank Aaron and Ozzie Smith coming out and endorsing Rose for the Hall of Fame, that's good enough for me. I think it happens within the next 10 years.

He played and managed with tremendous passion. He was one of the greatest players in history of the game. Politics needs to be less of a factor in the Hall of Fame. Also, he has been severely punished for his gambling. He's an ultimate baseball guy. A lot of players in the hall are less than perfect.

I was going to reply almost word-for-word. Glad I decided to read the thread first.

The current home run record is an abomination directly attributed to roids.

/Roger Maris is the true HR king.

He was/is a big time arrogant ******* and so am I.

He bet on baseball and specifically his own games. Win or not. How will this not teach a lesson for future players? It destroys all integrity of the game.

Let him in, along with the steroids users. Like others have said, his plaque should reflect his mistakes.

However, I'm selling all this yuku maintenance that keeps popping up for me.

I am with OP4 on the two separate careers idea. As a player he definitely deserves it. If the steroids guys get in and cheated WHILE playing then he should definitely get in if breaking the rules when NOTplaying. It would be one hell of a precedent to set that you can cheat on the field but not as a manager and get into the hall of fame.
