with the Phil Simpson announcement one had to figure it was a done deal with someone as the next DC would want to have influence on that hire...
As for Butler, I really don't know what to think... I guess it's a wait and see moment for me but I'm more cautious than optimistic

John Butler is gonna be the DC as one true insider not on this board stated that Butler is gonna be the DC and could be named officially as early as this week. This dude was also right about Holgerson and was spot on to the timeline when of it was made official.
Butler has chops as he's been DC before in the college ranks and was part of an NFL coaching staff that boasted the top defense in the NFL all 5 years he was there and knew every aspect of that defense plus his secondary all 6 years was the top one and allowed the fewest passing yards all 6 years he was there. His secondary was made up of the creme del a creme db's.
That insider was absolutely correct and look at what time I posted this!

People out here in PA are laughing at this hire. He was defensive coordinator at PSU in 2013 and they were awful. It was a post Sandusky sanction team but he didn’t do much to make the best of what he had. A wretched PSU defense that year.

Probably got turned down by several candidates. That is why the delay. Butler was a fall back guy. Which is why Snow is sticking around. This is just disappointing and deflating. A journeyman hack of a coach who hasn’t been anything special at any of his stops.
At this point I don't think we know how Butler will be as DC because there's just not enough DC history in his background to go on.
Not a good hire. He is NOT better than the guy that just left.

Settling for mediocre but familiar isn't going to elevate things.
Rhule is not at a place where he can afford to be training a guy "we just don't know how he will do because he doesn't have a body of work as a DC" on the job.

Damn. Lots of haters. Dude got here a month before the season, in a scheme he wasn’t familiar with. Did the best with what he had imo. Can’t turn Issac Gifford into prince amukamara. Also, statistically, the secondary was better in 24’ compared to 23’.
Don’t love it but will let it play out.

Right there with you. I wanted an experienced, proven DC. All we can do is hope it works out. On the bright side, we should know if he is the guy in his first year.
FWIW, per his bio, Butler has a ton of coaching experience but only one year as a DC (for a 1A team) - 2013 with Penn State.

bounced around at the Bills, who "mutually agreed to part ways" after last season. Bills passing defense currently in the top 5 without him, ours considerably worse with him.
Rhule the Retard strikes again. Even Mike Riley would laugh at this hire.

So we just made him the DC to run a defensive scheme that he isn't familiar with? Rhule wants to keep the 3-3-5. Hopefully he is a better DC than DB coach cause they sucked this year. In the opponents pass yards per attempt statistic Neb was 8th in 2023 and 91st in 2024.
