Not surprised.

The reality is Rutgers needs to spend a ton to match even the average P5 teams like Illinois, Purdue, and Northwestern.

If you don't give the guy the job right after the interview, he has too much time to think about the difficulty of this job.

At this point Rutgers is in the "beggars cant be choosers" scenario. I fear if its not Schiano it'll be a very bad list of candidates willing to take the job.

All of a sudden our short list got shorter.

Does Greg have RU in a beggars position? Oh the humanity.

No. It is because he knows Schiano is getting the offer. It is typical for someone who will not get the job to withdraw from consideration rather than being passed over.
Maybe. Whatever the case - it’s Schiano or we might as well leave the Big Ten.

No way in holy hell FSU hires Butch Jones after his failure at Tennessee. He has a better chance of being hired by your Mountaineers.

Well that’s why I said you can’t rule out Schiano until you see one of those coaches withdraws from consideration deals. So until you see that he’s still in play obviously and who knows maybe Jones knows Schiano is going to get done soon so that’s why he took his name out... usually that’s when the name gets pulled when they know some other candidate is about to get the job.

Its also could mean he doesn’t want to be strung along too so either way we move on to Schiano or whomever.

FWIW, something I’ve often seen posted here...coaches pull their names out when they know they’re not getting the job.

This could mean the Schiano hire is imminent.

edit: @sherrane We’re on the same page.
It better be! Will be a disaster if Greg falls through now.

He does because the overwhelming majority of the fan base wants him. Hobbs is in a no-win situation. He can either have RU football fans line up with their torches and pitchforks because he didn't hire Schiano or he can hire Schiano and hope he turns the program around. Hobbs will be fired within four years if Schiano fails to get things going within four seasons because he will be blamed for Schiano's failure.

Jones didn't want to be 2nd fiddle to Schiano. He knows everyone wants schiano and if he didn't come people, the media, high school coaches would make Jones' life even harder. We as a fan have created a unique situation. It's schiano or bust at this point.

Agree. Hobbs lost his opportunity to select the next FB HC based on choosing Ash and then sticking with him beyond season 3. The softball controversy also hurts Hobbs image.

Many of us are far more comfortable with the RU Boosters making the choice, since they will be funding a good part of the HC comp plan, as well as the fear that Hobbs might wiff again.

Actually, he'd be a great fit there.

I want to see WVU do well in that Texas conference. Hated them when we played them but for various reasons, I want them to dominate the Big 12.

Butch Jones would kill it there. He's a bad fit for RU.

He probably didn't ask for much... seeing that we would only cater to Greg Schiano probably pissed him off... Rich Rodriguez is out there still, I love the job Greg Roman has done with Lamar Jackson this year.... two guys what's great offenses that will generate excitement and put fannies in the seats.

If Schiano's hired and fails in four years Hobbs deserves to be fired. How many chances does an AD get to hire a decent football HC?

He's still a winning coach, and it is obvious the boosters don't want him. Smart move by him. He will probably have to go to a lower level program and win there to rebuild his resume

Not sure why we bothered hiring a search firm. I think we actually have them on retainer for the next couple of years.

Former Colorado AD, current Cincy AD and soon to be USC AD got 3 at Colorado I had posted about that on the board. Dan Hawkins, Jon Embree (near unicorn fired after 2 years) and Mike Macintyre were all his hires...he got fired somewhere in the Macintyre tenure. Hired Fickell and now he's got the USC job.

I think he's referring to some here saying if Hobbs hires GS, he'll get a pass if GS fails cause there was so much pressure on him to hire GS. He's saying it's his hire be it GS or anyone else. I agree with that point. There is no reprieve. You're the AD who ever you hire is your guy pressure or not. If GS is his guy fine but if he isn't I'd say succeed or fail on your terms....less regret that way. Do the due diligence and make the best call you can and if you succeed great and if you fail you know did it on your terms....not someone else pushing you.

I think it’s obvious that he withdrew as a face saving move, but Jesus some of you people are like nervous old women. If things Fall through with GS, it’s only early November. Most searches don’t begin until December when coaches are fired at the end of the season. Plenty of time to find alternate candidates and focus harder on coaches currently employed who may not be willing to g give there full attention to a new opportunity mid-season but might be more open to it when the regular season is through.
