Covid protocol? I think they are still traveling on twice as many buses to spread out. Maybe there were no extra airplanes or no seats on the wings.

There's a whole other thread on this. Apparently planes have to land at Montgomery or Columbus because the Airport at Auburn can't handle 737 size planes.
So bus 30. Load plane for 30. Fly for 60. Unload for 30. Drive for 60.... If there are no flight delays from weather or the airport(s). 3.5 hours best case to fly and your players are shuffling in and out of planes in busses every hour. If you could fly righ
Or you can drive 4-4.5 hours and players relax the whole ride. At some point certain members of our dipshit fanbase has to use some common sense. They're not riding over in a yellow dog. The bus is probably a lot more comfortable than the plane for the big boys anyway.
ETA. Agreeing with goat. Flying commercial when I lived 20 minutes from Love Field in Dallas I never flew unless the drive was more than 5 hours. When I was 45-60 minutes away from DAL the burbs, I would bump that up to 6. Minimum 7 to fly from DFW.
Worked a lot in Kansas City over the years and just made the drive after the first year or two of constant weather delays between the two airports Probably my max drive at about 7.5 hours. That damn KC airport is 50 miles from anything it seems like.

6 hours is my own personal drive/fly break point, and that's just for me, flying commercially. Imagine dealing with 120 or so people, commercially or generally. We should never fly to Auburn with that many people. Or multiple other places.

We have quarterly meetings in ATL, it's a 7 hour drive from Jxn, leave home two and half hours before the flight, an hour flying time, 30 - 45 minutes to deplane and get bags, another hour plus to get ground transportation to the hotel. Flying may save an hour or two and that's not factoring in delays. That extra two hours is a small price to pay to avoid the hassle of flying (plus its hard to get a Glock 17 through security).
If you are comparing driving from Jackson versus flying from Atlanta, why would you leave 2.5 hours before your flight? Is JAN so ****** now that it takes over and hour to get through security?
Or do you mean Jacksonville, which shouldn’t be seven hours?

My wife and I were at a conference in Indianapolis and had a Sunday afternoon flight to Memphis through Detroit. The flight from Indy to Detroit was delayed due to mechanical problems so we would miss our connecting flight so the airline offered us another option to fly to Chicago, then have a huge layover til the next morning to Charlotte then to Memphis. I told my wife to get our stuff and head to the rent a cars. We were home before we would have even made it to Chicago.
30+ minutes to get to airport, 15-30 minutes to park and check in (if checked bags factor in an additional 30 mikes), security is a breeze, 15 - 30 minutes at most, even if it is busy (unless a National Guard unit is headed out for deployment). This will get you to the gate 30-45 minutes before boarding (that is a cushion in case of delay in any of the previous steps). Compared to most, Jackson is a very easy airport to get through. I could cut an hour out of that and as long as everything runs perfectly, still make it. Plus I get paid mileage and an extra day of per diem. My rule of thumb, is if I can leave home in daylight and get there in daylight, I'm driving.
Mine used to be 4, but yeah probably 6 now, depending on circumstances.

Interesting, not sure what the criteria is these days but we flew to Auburn (Columbus, GA) in the 70's and we sure didn't have a 100MM budget and pre LT. Not saying it's right or wrong, just don't know what goes into the current decision process.
Not only that, they'd still have a 40 mile or so bus ride from Montgomery or Columbus, GA. Seems like it's much more practical and efficient to take the bus. Taking the bus has to be an order of magnitude less expensive, perhaps several orders, than chartering a plane.

Auburn always stays at the Renaissance in Downtown Montgomery. The visiting team to Auburn almost always stays at the Embassy Suites across the street. The only exception I know of is Georgia.
Auburn has no airport so the team would have to fly from GTR to Montgomery. By time they get through security, which is still required for a football team on a charter flight, it's faster to drive that short distance.

Leaving the game at Troy coming up 231 at night, which is a sketchy road during the day, we tucked in behind the bus and did 80 all the way back to Montgomery.
Equipment always goes in a MSU wrapped and decorated tractor trailer that leaves Wednesday or Thursday night after practice with everything in it
You are probably too young to remember when we didn't have interstates and four lane highways. I remember when I was a child Hwy 82 between Starkville and Columbus was a narrow two lane highway that was dangerous. It was impossible to pass anyone. Don't know why, but as a child crossing the bridge over the Tombigbee River would always scare me like crazy. I suspect back in the day it was probably over a three hour drive from Starkville to Tuscaloosa. You don't really realize how far we have come unless you remember how bad things once were.
