I've lived in Hillview the past 14 years. I remember the stupid derailment. Thankfully I wasn't close enough to have any bad effects of it getting to my house. A guy I work with lived in the house right next to where it happened. It was a major problem for weeks and screwed up his house because of the chemicals burning for so long. He basically lived in one of the houses in the picture below behind that smoke.

I lived off of Mt Washington road about a couple miles from where the tornado hit. Didn't know how bad it was until a few days later when I went down that way and you could see where I believe it tore through the trees on one side of Preston Hwy and then hit the houses across the street on the other side. I was down in the basement just watching TV and saw the warnings come on the TV and didn't think much of it. That is at least twice that a tornado missed me by a few miles. Here's a clip I found about it. At 8:35 it looks like Little Flock Baptist Church to get an idea of where this took place.

Yeah man you were very fortunate to have it miss you. I don't know if its PTSD or something like that...... but I stay prepared now. Anytime there's a warning I got my kids in the basement and have supplies stored in case the worst happens. I remember after the tornado, that night we had to sit in the ruins of our house to keep looters away. My dad was so stressed feeling everything and the fact people tried looting he actually shot at them a couple of times with his shotgun. People like that are the scum of society

One of the factories in Shep uses frozen ammonia (they create the coolers that contain flu vaccines for shipping). The guy who I worked for there said if anything happened to it they would have to evacuate the entire city of Shepherdsville.

Doesn't surprise me. The cooling system they use at Kroger Distribution Center uses ammonia and when there was a small leak years ago, I believe they had to evacuate the whole facility. I would imagine a large leak getting outside to the community would cause a bunch of health risks.

I grew up in Mt. Washington in the 50's and 60's and moved away when I got married. I moved my family back to Pioneer Village and both my kids went to Brooks Elementary and North Bullitt in the 80's and 90's.
I lived on Acacia Ave. during the 1996 tornado. It was so powerful it pulled the asphalt off the street. Its really hard to believe no one died. I lived there 13 years and loved it. I served on the city council for 2 terms also.
No wonder you are big foot.

I’m actually taking about the derailment In the early 90’s in Shepherdsville. It was huge disaster. Rail cars hanging off of the bridge over Salt River. I believe there were cars with checmicals that were highly explosive next to cars that were burning. The entire city of Shepherdsville was evacuated for a couple of days, the institutes a curfew and the national guard wouldn’t let anyone in the city at all.

I also attended Brooks Elementary in 1977. First organized basketball team I ever played on. Lost 12-2 in a game and I was the two points. First baskett I ever scored. Lived off of Hebron Lane.

Also have friends up there who were in a pretty big Christian rock band in the 80's and 90's (Bride).
Do you remember Ms. Graves?
I had a huge crush on her!

I worked for the Ace Hardware in Mt. Washington where the owner was selling "Bop Obamas"...like those clown thingies you punch and they bounce back up. Two crazy ladies came in and immediately demanded to know where the "Bop Romneys" were and called all three TV stations out to the store. LOL.

Then there was a grocery store across from the Kroger there where a guy snuck into the men's room before they closed, got up in the middle of the night and cooked himself a huge meal of steaks and fish, but got caught somehow.

That McDonald's right there is also where the girl was ordered to strip by a caller (a movie was made about it).

I had my first kiss outside a classroom at Brooks Elementary.

She even touched my face with her fingers, a real pro.

Ms. Graves fake paddled me out in the hall after I was goofing off. She hit the bot of her shoe instead. I think she liked me.

I also came down with chicken pox at Brooks.
