Building the Rutgers program

Folks I understand the frustration you have watching this team and program. I graduated from Ohio State in 1987 and at that time and for a few years after that, Wisconsin was where your program is now. Then......Barry Alvarez arrived around 1990. He went out and got good solid 2 and mostly 3 star guys(a 4 star guy here and there) and built a team and identity on running the football and being physical in the trenches. They didn't have the skill or speed of a Penn State, Ohio State or Michigan - but they always played with great effort and toughness and made you have to play your best to win. Over the years Wisconsin has continued on with this theme and approach. However because of their continued consistent success, they've been able to attract better and better skill throughout the years to compliment their physical style to where now they are one of most consistent Top 15 programs in the country. This took time...it didn't happen right away. But before the Alvarez era, they were a program down in the dumps.

The one thing that Wisconsin doesn't have going in its favor, as compared to the State University of New Jersey, is talent in its home state. Yeah...maybe where Rutgers is right now....maybe you don't keep the prolific 4 & 5 * Jersey prospects....but maybe the goal is you get 1 or 2 once in a while. Meanwhile, hammer home the 3* guys like Michigan State and Iowa does currently. Build your program with those hungry players that after 2-3 years in the program and weight room can get you to a point where you're consistently bowling. It's a phase thing....you aren't going to go from a couple of victories a year to 8 overnight.

What I saw last Saturday is a team that gives good effort...and has a few good looking B1G caliber players...but not nearly enough. It won't matter if you have Chris Ash, or Greg Schiano, or Bill Parcells as your coach - in the end you are mainly limited at this point from a personnel standpoint. Georgetown basketball could completely change the fortunes of their basketball program with one Mr. Patrick Ewing.....with football it takes years and multiple solid classes to really change the landscape. - 10 Point Buck

Alvarez inherited a program that had not had a winning season since 1984, and had only won seven games in Big Ten conference play in that time.

In year 1,1990- Alvarez went 1-10 and 0-8. They lost to Temple
1991- 5-6/ 2-6
1992- 5-6/3-5 They beat Eastern Michigan

1993 10-1-1/6-1-1 Won the B1G and Won the Rose Bowl.

Are you telling us we will be 10-1-1 in 2020 and win the Rose Bowl? I'll take it!!!

Thanks 10 Point for the kind words of encouragement..........much appreciated! I think a lot of the disappointment/frustration here is partly due to the modicum of success that came to the surface under Schiano (after torturous years beforehand) then continued somewhat with Flood only to submerge again. Yes I am old enough to remember when Wisconsin (and Northwestern too) were the perennial doormats. I agree with the approach both programs (or at least Wisconsin) took in building strength on "running the football and being physical in the trenches" to ultimately become successful. Personally, I think this is what Ash is trying to do and I still remain hopeful, albeit hard at times. :)

What makes it so difficult for us is that while we are certainly down in the dumps now, we had a pretty good football team not so long ago. I'm not saying that team would have won the B1G. Just that we would have been competitive.
Out current team would get their asses kicked by any of our teams from 2005-2012.

No you aren't going to win the Rose Bowl in 2019...or anytime soon. First off, the landscape of the B1G is much tougher now than it was 25 years ago where it was basically a two trick pony league. We talk about recruiting, we talk about coaches, but a definite component to this equation is on the backs of your faculty and administration in terms of providing up to date facilities, etc.

Thanks. Actually, it is 2020 when we will make our Rose Bowl appearance. It's the year Urban Meyer is going to "retire" and then take over as the RU Head Coach.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Excellent point! Heck, your first B1G team of 2014 would kick your current team's ***. Look as you all know, NJ produces outstanding High School talent. You have a # of past teams you can use as an example to show that Rutgers can produce good solid teams. In a few years you will start to gain the full windfall of joining the conference. Continue to upgrade your facilities, stay the course, and trust me this will continue to trend the way you hope.

Thanks! Nice to hear a positive peep out of someone's mouth around here.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I hear Meyer is scheduled to have another medical condition around that time.
