Buford and Singleton

Just saw Sean Callahan's weekly rundown. He mentions Buford as the top safety right now. That doesn't surprise me given all the talk about Buford by the coaches at the start of spring. Of the other candidates like Farmer, Pola-Gates, and Singleton, he mentioned Singleton as his pick to win the second spot. That was a little surprise to me. Fischer was definitely complimentary of Singleton when he discussed the years new recruits, but that's pretty typical and doesn't promise anything. I hadn't heard much about Singleton since spring started, but that's probably because the sports writers didn't ask. Now hopefully they will.

How often has Callahan been correct with his predictions? I kind of cringe every time he makes those predictions. Just let things play out a little longer before you put your foot in it Sean, it's way too early to predict anything with this team.

Farmer has had some big moments - both good and bad. With his size you'd think he would be much better at tackling....struggled many times last year. Also lacks some speed. Seems to be around the ball enough though...I always felt like Sanford should get a few shots.

@Sean Callahan is not predicting as he is not in the predicting business. He is providing the information he hears from the coaches, players and other sources and he disseminates the information to us on HOL.com. He only predicts in season games. Not sure where you got he was predicting starters, so you can STOP your kind of cringing! But Sean doesn't need me defending him, he's pretty good at doing that himself.

Well he does make predictions every week in his article. I think 3 and out. If you are a paying member you can read it.

 Laughing Sorry, but I guess when I read @Sean Callahan's words when he includes words like "think" or "feel" are NOT words used as "predicting" something or someone! So with that said, we can agree to disagree I guess!

Spot on with my assessment. He's got a knack for the ball as pass defender but run support is his weakness. If he doesn't improve there, hard to see him being a starter. He could be more of a third-and-long specialist, or go in on possessions where Chins predicts a pass-heavy drive from the opponent. He's shown flashes as a difference maker so I hope he rounds out his game.

As for the "way too early" point, positive news still beats bad. It's good to hear the newcomer is competing. Many times early news is just that there's a long way to go; that Singleton's in consideration for a starting position as a spring transfer is promising for his future. He's got really good size, and Fischer was claiming he could play corner so I expect he has good quickness.
Callahan only mentioned 4 safeties. That doesn't account for Gifford who's playing nickel or the many defensive backs playing cornerback. Nebraska has gone after big corners who could also play safety. Newsome, Hill, Brown, and Clark are backs I can think of working there, and I think any of those four could play safety. I doubt if the starters in the secondary will be decided until late in fall camp.

Your track record of predictions is not very good that's all I'm saying. And yes when you predict some things it is cringe worthy I'm not saying you as a person are cringe worthy just some of your predictions. Yes I'm having a wonderful Monday in SoCal, thanks for asking.

Didn’t Callahan say over 6.5 sacks for Alex Davis two years ago? And Davis ended the year with 1/2 a sack

I like Callahan, but he drinks the koolaid like the rest of us

Is it safe to assume that Pola-Gates is another bust? Not sure how much of this has been injuries, but I've never seen a picture of him where he looked like he weighed more than 160 lbs.

I'm pretty nervous about Farmer as a starter. On the plus side, he does have size and has proven to be a bit of a ball hawk, but he just looks slow out there. Besides the poor tackling, he takes bad angles and just makes too many mistakes. I just have a hard time believing that he would grade out as a starter next fall unless this team just doesn't practice at full speed enough get an accurate read on things.

As of now, he is a bust. But I say that only because he had very high expectations since he could have taken official visits to about anywhere he wanted to. The safety situation is as wide open as it can be for a team that won three games last year and he's in his 4th year...

Seems he is a bit too wee for playing safety in the B1G.

He seems like a perfect candidate for the impact special teamer we desperately need, especially in punt coverage

Here's a question...What happens when Brown comes back and performs at a high level where it looks like he, Hill and Newsome are your top 3 DB's, including the safeties. Do you move one of three to safety and which one would you move?

I know the goal is to have guys who are flexible in the back but how often do you really see a safety move to corner or true corner movr to safety. IMO, too many think these transitions from one position to another are a snap. It appears in Chins system, those back 4 have lots of different places for their eyes to go.
