If you are referring to me, then you misunderstood me entirely. I’m not an anti-vaxxer, am fully vaccinated, and recommend that everybody get vaccinated per the overwhelming medical consensus as supported by the overwhelming statistical evidence.

That being said, I do think that it‘s a little morbid for people, especially non-medical professionals, to be entertained by speculating about the cause of these sorts of medical events. Medical pros speculating is a little different since it’s a professional point of interest to them.

I’m opposed to the spread of misinformation and disinformation. That’s pretty much my only interest in this thread, beyond wishing the player a full recovery.

My understanding is he was shocked twice. That in itself doesn't rule out any cause, because of the way cardioversion (defibrillation) works. A defibrillator DOES NOT restore a sinus rhythm. What it does is stops the heart very briefly, then relies on the body's natural chemistry and electrical process to restart as normal sinus rhythm. Not infrequently the result of a first cardioversion is a rhythm other than sinus, which needs to be converted again.

I was personally defibrillated 7 times in the space of 4 hours following an injury.

Its a terrible tragedy and hoping the kid pulls through and if they figure out what the cause was - safeguards or screening mechanisms are put in place to try and prevent it in the future, whether it was impact or health related.

Last night a doctor said CPR though effective in saving lives and even when done properly, only delivers 30% of the blood to the brain that a normal heart does. I never heard a percentage put to that and maybe it's because I never took a CPR course.

Oh boy! How did I miss this thread? So many points to address in this and the following responses. Here goes. Per the American Heart Association CPR provides only 10% to 30% of normal blood flow to the heart and 30% to 40% of normal blood flow to the brain even when delivered according to guidelines.

The patient is getting exhaled air, which is somewhat lower in O2 percentage than room air, which is itself only 21% O2. If the CPR isn't really good, then yes, there's a lower perfusion rate (percentage of oxygen in the blood) than normal.

This isn't how CPR is done by EMS professionals. EMTs use something called a BVM (Bag-Valve Mask) to inflate a patient's lungs. When on scene, that BVM can be set up to either utilize room air or it can be hooked up to an O2 tank - in which case the patient is getting 100% O2. CPR administered in this manner is HIGHLY effective - as I posted earlier, you can get perfusion rates of 100%.

I think you are getting some terminologies and concepts mixed up. Your numbers are correct with the oxygen percentages but delivering 100% oxygen does not guarantee 100% perfusion. As noted above, the highest quality CPR delivers fractions of the blood flow the heart is capable of normally providing. Because of that, tissue perfusion (and resulting tissues death) is compromised even if delivering 100% O2.

Based on the point of impact and the timing of collqpse, the most likely cause was commotio cordis. I'm not sure what you were trying to imply. CC would have resulted in ventricular fibrillation. The only cure is early and immediate defibrillation, which is immediately followed by CPR for about two minutes (without checking the heart rhythm or pulse). After that, a recheck for ventricular fibrillation is done which would require another shock if it persisted. It's very possible Hamlin was defibrillated twice and people thought that meant he was revived twice. The other thing I immediate thought when I saw him collapsed was an aortic tear, which he would not have left the field alive if it happened.

Cardioversion and defibrillation are similar but are used in two very different circumstances. Defibrillation wipes out the chaotic electrical activity occurring (which stops the heart) in hopes the natural pacemaker of the heart begins proper electrical activity. Defibrillation is ONLY used on people in cardiac arrest. Cardioversion is used in different circumstances but not on dead people. I hope all is well after your seven defibrillations and/or cardioversions.

Unless a person is old, overweight, unhealthy or all of them, what you stated in the first quote is demonstrably not true at this point in the program. I'm not sure what you're referring to, but the statistics and consensus overwhelmingly show that the vaccines are safe. And the stats also show that they are highly effective at lowering the risks of severe infection or hospitalization versus not being vaccinated.

There is still no statistical proof of serious complications from vaccines that comes anywhere near outweighing demonstrated benefits. Just some incidents of potential complications, ****-tons of speculative BS, and a some studies of potential correlations, virtually all of which disclaim their use as conclusive evidence. And we can all examine the vaccinated versus non-vaccinated deaths since the vaccines have come out. That should be all anybody who is data-driven or fact-driven should need.

But I really don't care if people don't want to get vaccinated. That's not my problem. It's taking the tiny fraction of "evidence" against vaccines and treating it like it's meaningful when dwarfed by the evidence that they're working and safe that I object to. It's just dumb. Sorry, we can agree to disagree. But I just wanted to make it clear what I meant by overwhelming consensus before dropping it.

In any scientific debate, or medical debate in this case, there will always be room for doubt, or at least there should be as skepticism is fundamental to good science. But in some debates, the sheer volume of expert opinion plus data on one side so completely dwarfs the naysayers and contradictory data on the other, that the best available answer is obvious.

That is the case here. For me, it has nothing to do with what Fauci, or what the FL surgeon general, or any other one person (such as Kennedy), or one study, says or thinks or does. It certainly has nothing to do with politicians or politics or agendas.

It’s entirely about what the obvious data (e.g. death rate post vaccine) says plus what the issue-specific professional community consensus says about the less obvious data that us laypeople cannot interpret on our own. And after that, it’s about logic and motivations.
