Profiling does occur, but not necessarily because of race.
Being a male - check.
Being a young male - double check.
Having an out of state license - check.
Driving on a known drug trafficking route - check.
Being alone - check.
I imagine if that same criteria were used, a decent percentage of vehicles driving into WV along I-77 from Columbus/Akron/Canton/Detroit would be flagged.
My son was once pulled over on some bogus infraction and was asked if he would give them permission to search the car. He agreed and luckily didn't have some remnant of pot in there. Given a warning.
Once I was in my son-in-laws vehicle in Colorado years back, when the cop pulled us over for speeding five miles over in a 40 mph zone. He sat in his vehicle with the lights on for what seemed an eternity before slowly walking up to the car. I think he thought we had drugs in the car or something. Asked us what were we doing (sight-seeing) and why were we in Colorado. Honestly, we sat there for at least half-an-hour before we got the ticket and could leave. It was somewhat unnerving, as I don't think we appeared to fit the criteria for appearing suspicious. The guy acted like he thought we were going to pull out guns or something. Also, we both had our wives in the car, which seemed like we were the obvious tourists cruising around.
My daughter has gotten out of several tickets just because she is attractive, and she was way over the speed limits.
Not blaming the cops on these things, but it does make you feel like a criminal when you seem "targeted."
