Brock Osweiler (not about TS)

After Osweiler had managed the offense effectively to get the Broncos into the play-offs, Denver went with Manning so that Peyton got a second ring as starting quarterback in the Super Bowl while Osweiler is a footnote as the back-up. Meanwhile, everyone knows the defense won the ring.

If Denver makes a different decision, is Osweiler still a Bronco today?

Perhaps. Then again, they also may not be World Champions. Maybe a seven-game starter would have outscored Rothlisberger, Brady and Newton. Maybe not.

"Outscored Rothlisberger, Brady, and Newton" sounds very impressive. Scored 19 points or more per game...? Less so.

Maybe they traded their future for last season. Maybe TS will be the next Tom Brady. But the main question was, do you think that Denver showing such support of Osweiler would have kept him in Denver in the face of the huge offer that Houston made.

No. In life and in pro sports - and especially in the NFL - money talks. Good for Osweiler to make his cash. No reason not to take it while it's there. In that league, it usually doesn't stay there very long.

I wasn't very impressed with Osweiler. He won because the Broncos had a great D and were good enuf on O. I think he is destined to be a career backup QB.

Maybe, but if he really looked to move on from Denver because he was upset about Peyton regaining the starter role then I would question if I wanted him back anyway. He got a RING. It worked out for Elway and the Broncos pretty well. I think this is a huge gamble by the Texans. Brock wasn't exactly Aaron Rodgers when he was in there despite getting the wins.. Let's see if he completes this contract, my money is on "no".

It feels like "Scott Mitchell gets a boatload of money from the Lions" [which was... 20+ years ago...], right on down to the fact that both QBs with <10 games under their belt are huuuuuuuuuuge. Nice for Osweiler, taking snaps from center is significantly out of vogue, meaning that he won't have to awkwardly take snaps like Mitchell used to do. (It was painful to watch that guy try to get that low.)

Good thing for Texans fans, Scott Mitchell turned out to be an all-time great with multiple Super Bowl wins.

Well, that's quite a hypothetical. OK, so if the Broncos went with him for the playoffs and they won the Super Bowl, I suspect they would have had more interest in securing his return but perhaps not at $18MM/year. So would Brock take less money? Probably. I think he was miffed he got pulled late last year. If the Broncos went with him and did not win the Super Bowl? He gone.

Elway doesn't overpay for free agents and has a very impressive record on having those he signs pan out. Which is good as he'll need to work some of that magic this year on offense at multiple positions.

And I'm all for TS being the next Brady! Maybe he'll face Brock in the opener on a Thursday this fall in Denver.

The media take on this was that BO was miffed for getting pulled and felt he needed a fresh start somewhere else. That said, the Texans' offer far surpassed the Bronco offer of $45M over 3 years,

But if you are BO, you decide to leave a situation where you have a very good shot at returning to the SB and have pretty much a lock on the starting QB job.

Going to guess that money talks much louder than any kind of hurt feelings.

Plus, Denver's return to the Super Bowl is far from a sure thing with all the losses they're going to have on the defensive side of the ball.

Brock made Denver's decision for them in as much as Brock lost games he should not have lost. He lost consecutive games inexplicably to the Raiders and then pissed away a first half lead against the Steelers. The #1 seed would have been secured and he would have never been pulled during a meaningless keep everyone healthy game during week 17 against the Chargers.

If Brock had run the table in the regular season he would never have lost his starting job, regardless of playoff outcomes.

Absolutely. Cannot blame BO for taking the much more lucrative deal. 99% of guys would.

Well, you can take the maybe out of outscoring Brady. That 7 game starter did beat Brady and the Patriots in the regular season.

Exactly. I remember the late Monday Night game against Cincinnati (since I'm a Cincy fan). The Bengals were winning and their D was playing great, confusing Osweiller. The Broncos brought Manning off the bench to raucous cheers and he was able to figure out the Bengal D and drive the Broncos down the field a couple times en route to a huge, home-field-advantage-deciding win. Manning may have lost some zip, but he was still light years ahead of the kid in game management.

And the teams that pay it are often sorry

Well, Manning didn't play in the Bengals game but game management was certainly why Kubes brought him back for the playoffs. D-Ware made the ultimate play in that game, dominated in the playoffs and they are asking him to take a pay cut. Elway does not spend loosely.

Elway's quotes from the press conference would indicate that you have hit the nail on the head.

You're right. I got confused. It was the next week against San Diego where that happened. I was invested in that game because I needed Denver to lose to get Cincy a better seed.
