You're underselling them.and we are going to be a Top 4 team, no doubt.
Willis will start because of his shooting & I can see Mulder playing the 3 some.
While no way do I see Cal platooning, I do see him occasionally making 3,4 or even 5 substitutions for fresh legs and to throw off the opponent's D.
Not to dis Mulder and Hawkins but it will be a drop off,the other three are just that good, there might be a drop off no matter what other two guards in the country you brought in.When one of the three of Briscoe, Fox and Monk go to the bench, there will not be much of a drop off when Hawkins takes their place. Even Mulder will provide comparable talent when there is foul trouble or just an off night for either of BFM. I am truly pumped to watch this team! Not trying to over hype, but our backcourt is going to be one of the best in the nation!
4 starters are locked in stone, only question is for the 5th, and it may be a situational answer, Hump if the other team is huge, Willis if the other team is small and wants to zone, Wenyen if the other team has a quick and tall 3/4. I would take bets that all three of those vying for last spot will start at some point this season based on situational need.
Willis starts because he is a natural rebounder. You must start guys that go for rebounds like him.
Until SKJ, Gabriel, or I-saac show me they can rebound like Derek ...I rest my case on this.
Derek is our 4 or 3. He can do 40% from 3 and rebound 8-12 a game every game. 1 block a game too. Derek's rebounding is his most impressive skill.
I suspect Willis will begin the season as the 5th starter, but sometime around mid-season either Gabriel or SKJ takes that spot from him.
Early on, who knows, but Cal starts five freshmen in the tournament (if he can get away with it...meaning the freshmen take a massive step toward collective competence).
The novelty will be historic. Briscoe still plays 30+ minutes. Gabriel or SKJ sub out after the first deadball. Briscoe plays in the clutch time and the three guard lineup makes a collective appearance for the overwhelming majority of the game. Cal tells the media, ad nauseam, that he's "starting five freshmen". The media checks him and counters "yes but you have Briscoe playing 32 minutes a game." UK fans enjoy the cutesy irony as UK storms to its 9th national title. Cal goes on to spread the "we started five freshmen and won the title" line on the recruiting trail for the next half-decade.
Umm... NO, it is not. Derek's "most impressive skill" is that he's our only big man who's can consistently hit outside shots. It's primarily the 40 plus three pt shooting percentage that has earned him playing time here, not rebounding, and certainly not defense. .
I swear, it's like some of you guys only remember what happened in the last game. You got a big who barely averages above 2 boards per game for his career, whose per 40 board average has consistently been worse than all our other bigs during his years here, who Cal specifically ripped for his lack of rebounding last year---but then he has one intra-squad blue white scrimmage where he grabs a bunch of boards and suddenly he's a "natural rebounder."
i think he means sub him for kj or gab real quick. five freshman is a pr stunt not because uk needs it but because cal could stick it to critics. i'm guessing that's his narrative anyway. i bet briscoe wouldn't care. the reason it won't happen is because they would just ask infinitely why briscoe isn't starting. just like you said he will always be on the floor.I would say that Briscoe never loses his starting position.
