With this weekend’s games cancelled with Tennessee Tech, MSU is now slated to play Kent State. https://t.co/H56PJCnbDx pic.twitter.com/W4GS6qTT0F— Bulldawgs247 (@Bulldawgs247) March 3, 2021

They just whipped Tennessee Tech's *** last weekend.

Has to be an upgrade in strength of schedule.

Hot dang daddy!! Would have been a shame to waste such a good weather weekend. I wonder if they will allow at least a slightly increased attendance too after Tate's announcement.

So, we're swapping out Golden Eagles for Flashes? I'm cool with that. Bruiser won't like it; he dislikes Mardi Gras. Can't please everyone.

I would be fine either way as long as they don't show their asses all weekend like Tulane did. (Memo to Tulane: you don't get extra runs for stomping on the plate after a home run, or for running your mouth at or mocking the opponent's players.)

The way I read Tate's announcement there are no more restrictions on outdoor arenas. Only indoor arenas are mentioned.

Am I wrong?

You are correct. There are no state restrictions; however, State has restrictions-- at least for this weekend:

Every time I hear of Kent State, I think of Four Dead in Ohio. What a tragedy that was. That and the entire Vietnam debacle.

Derf Backderf has a fantastic graphic novel about it that was published last year.

Link: Here.

This book and Joe Sacco's Paying the Land are the two best graphic novels released in 2020 that I've read.

Heard rumor that the SEC wants to keep capacity capped 50% or so until more SEC states open up. Guess they think it’s bad PR for crowded Mississippi baseball stadiums to be on TV. Any confirmation of this?

On the long list of folks I wouldn't have wanted to be over the last year..

Mike Richey ranks pretty high.

It seems like we played a pretty damn good Kent St team in a regional several years back. Maybe Ohio St was there too??

Yep 2001. Ohio State hosted it as a 2-seed and we won as a visiting 1-seed with Kent State as runnerup as the 4-seed.

The Columbus Regional was really competitive with all but one game in that regional being 1-run games.

Really strange that we didn't host, being the #1 seed. Backstory on that?

Remember Chris Young from Stow, OH being lights out in that regional.

Yeah, I believe that was the year we won the SEC tourny playing LSU in the championship game, with Chris Young dominating them on the mound. I was at that game. Packed house, half MSU half LSU. Great memory.

Just got an email to purchase my original chair back seats and parking pass for the rest of the season, starting this weekend.

I believe it was the old State flag that kept us from hosting that year.

That was back when there was a big geographic bias with the selection committee. If there was a Midwestern team or a west coast team remotely in the hosting discussion they were for dang sure gonna host, even as a 2 seed. We shot up the boards after winning the SEC tourney that year but they had to have their Midwestern host, so we got sent on the road instead of hosting at The Dude. And of course Ohio State didn’t even win a game in their own Regional. We went on a family vacation to Disney World during the middle of that Regional, I remember us losing radio signal as we left the state going toward Mobile and hoping that I’d find out how we did somehow. I think the USA Today just so happened to post the Regional scores and I saw that we won in the paper a day or two later.

Moot point anyway, we were paired with an absolutely loaded Fullerton team that was the No. 1 overall seed and they beat us senseless in the Supers.

Nope. That was the year the ban on Mississippi, South Carolina and Georgia from hosting postseason at predetermined sites became effective. But since this was an "earned" host, that's not what kept us from hosting. This was also when the NCAA was making a strong push to spread out the host sites more. Since Ohio St. was the Big 10 champion and only host and we finished in a 3-way tie for 4th in the SEC, and they already had 4 regionals with SEC hosts, we got to take the trip north. It was actually probably a better draw than hosting with a tough #2 seed.
