When these guys got picked in the first ten rounds they were gone
I'm not surprised he signed, but once he slipped into the fourth round, it became a different conversation. From there, the negotiated slot value was always going to be a major factor in his decision.

Yeah but they would not have drafted him there without a handshake agreement with other guys knowing they had the extra money.

He got that money because he was elite at the primary position he played. You don't come along and find catchers like him all the time.

He likely would have, but there was also some discussion surrounding his pre-draft evaluations that may have contributed to his slide into the fourth round.

In this era, No team wastes a top 10 round pick unless they have already come to an a financial agreement with that players representation. Since the draft reduced to 20 rounds, only 2 picks in the top 10 rounds failed to sign and at least one of those was due to a failed physical exam.

The conversation was never about stay or go to college. It was about the signing bonus.

OK dumb question of the day. Is college potential NIL money making these "signing bonuses" larger than in the past ?

Yes, but it's also making things more consistent. Nowadays, if you're drafted in the top 10, you're gone. MLB can't 17 with folks nearly as much as in the past.

But, baseball NIL isn't nearly as high as some people think. But it certainly influences the 150K type decisions, etc.
