The receiving team would have a choice of where it would be spotted. Either place of illegal touching. Obviously, they would spot it at the forward most spot. But It would be their choice. It is still live for someone to pick it up because the touching by K does not cause the ball to become dead any more than touching by R (a muff for example) causes the ball to become dead. That is and always has been the rule. The mess up was not killing it on the inadvertent signal. In fact if the guy had fumbled the ball on his return and we picked it up and ran it back for a touchdown, Memphis would still have the choice to take the ball at the spot where we touched it.

This is an honest question. If instead of simply touching the ball, he had batted it backwards toward the goal line and we'd picked it up when it reached the 2 yard line, where would the ball have been spotted? Where it was first touched, or where we picked it up? If it's where it was first touched, then how is it still live for someone to pick it up?

I guess the real debate is what constitutes "blowing the play dead". Sure, he waved his hands for about a second and then quickly realized the ball was in play. Nobody heard a whistle because he didn't blow one, which is why the Memphis player didn't hold up for even one instant. There was no whistle so why should he?

Having two #4's on the field is the real mistake here. Our guys need to learn to play until you hear a whistle and pick the damn ball up and hand it to the official. What made that half pathetic was letting a mediocre AAC team back in the game when we should have been soundly beating them, and the scoring droughts that continue to cost us games.

The whistle doesn't control a play being dead. The arms waving about the head does. The clock operator can't hear a whistle. Sometimes whistles aren't heard upon first blow. Waving arms above head is reviewable and clear as ******* day.

Read the rule book next time you wanna say "until you read the rules." You look like a jackass.

It does not matter whether you think he downed the ball or not. The ref waved his hands to stop play. They had two guys with the same jersey #on the field and they had three players come off the sidelines on the field during the play.

The TD was a screw up by the officials.

And I don't really give a flip what the technical rule says. As Brandon so eloquently put it, we see punted ball after punted ball week after week downed by touching it once the ball comes to rest. It ain't rocket surgery here. Touching the ball down was good enough for these refs like its good enough for any ref crew every week and THAT IS WHY he was signaling the play dead. Why the hell he allowed to happen what happened I will NEVER understand. If touching the ball down is now no longer adequate I want to see EVERY officiating crew for EVERY game EVERY week just stand in place after a ball is touched and not signal **** until somebody on the punt team grabs the ball and hands it to him. GEEZ.

It was definitely stopped while he touched it. That is when it is downed. Depending on how his hand left the ball or if his foot hit it as he was standing up is what made it start moving again.

So, I just watched the replay again. I'm good with the SEC's explanation. The ball didn't stop moving until AFTER Emerson touched it. The ball was rolling when he tapped it, and still rolling after he tapped it. I think if you touch a moving ball and it keeps moving, you haven't downed it.

The ref started to waive his arms over his head, then stopped. His hands were above his head, but had not yet come together. That shouldn't matter, and the SEC says he called it down. But I can see the BJ being unsure how far into the motion he had gone and thinking everything was fine, instead of informing the other refs he had blown the play dead.

I think most of the blame goes to the replay team. They had plenty of time to review the play before the XP, and they could have buzzed down if they needed more time.

Well, really, most of the blame goes to Emerson. He couldn't see the BJ, so no way he was fooled by the quick arm waive. He just assumed the play was over.
