I mean if 30 people die of shark attacks this summer you can bet your ***, we’d be having a Shark Hunt bonanza.
9/11 is a great example. $5.4 trillion spent in security and military mobilization, countless cases of PTSD / homelessness / suicide by service members who were deployed to the Middle East in the last 20 years, long term recurring costs at airports for staffing of federal security agents and equipment all resulting from 3,000 deaths from 3 planes that went down.
Not saying it wasn’t justified, it was for the most part, although the war overseas should have never escalated to the point that it did. Likewise, the COVID response mostly was. The key point is that being able to put a face to the enemy can give you almost infinite goodwill in the court of public opinion. Nobody questions all the money and the personal toll for many families from a response to 3,000 deaths due to terrorism, but suddenly everybody’s an expert on the proper response or lack thereof to a pandemic that’s killed nearly 600,000 just in the U.S. Somewhat of a double standard.
