For us this tournament is all about getting prepared for the NCAAs. We are still looking for a dependable third starter who can throw strikes a couple of times through the order, and Brandon Smith is the best candidate to do that. Today will be his trial run.

I like it because he’s got good command of multiple pitches and has some starting experience already. He was probably going to be a weekend starter in 2020 before the injury.

If Smith can keep the ball down and get a bunch of ground balls he has great starter’s potential. Walks have never been an issue for him, where he gets into trouble is when he’s leaving balls up in the zone and teams mash him. That’s only really happened once this year though (Arkansas), otherwise he’s been good.

Completely agree and I’ve tried to not get too harsh with any criticism of Fristoe, but he hasn’t been anywhere close to good for 2+ months now. Like at all

I’m sure that Lemonis was hoping that a weekend off a couple weeks ago might give him such much needed time to get his head right, but that unfortunately didn’t do the trick. We’ve got to find someone that can get through 3 innings without getting raked, and hopefully Smith is that guy. It’d also be great if Fristoe suddenly found the zone again after being moved to the pen.
