I thought coaches wanted to make steps up whether it be in conference stature or program stature... Just an odd move, it seems.

I don't think so. Mountain West > than MAC. Plus, there is a ton of talent, and San Diego is probably a good place to try to bring in kids from other parts of the country.

Plus, they have a cool mascot.

The MWC is a more visible conference than the MAC, and the move's been done before-- most notably by Urban Meyer when he went from Bowling Green to Utah.
