Pitino wasn't fired from Knicks. Brown resigned from Charlotte iirc and took a year off. Johnson was fired but had as much success as Stevens.

Maybe I don't get it so please explain to me why a coach wouldn't leave an NBA team where he is making $6-$7m a year to go to one of the 1-4 top all time programs who may close to double his salary?

You think Boston is going to keep him around more than a few more years without significant improvements?
Pitino was at odds with Knicks GM Al Bianchi.

As to why coaches wouldn't want to leave the NBA for a few million more? A few million more to people who already have millions isn't always a big deal. The NBA is a pretty sweet gig if you can get it and be successful enough to keep it. There's no....

* Recruiting, not only trying to evaluate players from a talent standpoint, but how they will fit in your system and if they'll thrive in a team concept. You're now also trying to figure out who may try to bolt for a pay for play league before they ever set foot on campus and there's no dealing with handlers or family/players who have a hand out. Oh yeah, no sitting in gyms half the year watching AAU tournaments.

* No schmoozing of boosters and especially no keeping an eye on jock sniffing boosters who want to be close to the program to an extent that you can land in hot water.

* No radio shows where you're fielding questions from Jim Bob in Virgie.

If I could remain gainfully employed in an NBA job, I'd never give a college job a second glance.

He's an NBA coach.

Even if the Celtics fire him (they wont), the timeline doesn't match up. Is he going to be unemployed for a year and take over at Duke next April?

Besides, if the Celtics fire him, he'll be getting calls from about 20 NBA teams.

Y'all have been scared he'd take every open college job in the last five years. Relax.

For good measure: he's an NBA coach.
^^^ THIS.
Stevens can have his pick of any number of NBA jobs. Being a college coach is a LOT more work than cashing those fat NBA checks. He turned down $10 million per from IU and he'd turn down that much from any college program. This ain't the late 80's .

I think it's funny that people are making definitive statements about whether coaches would leave the NBA for a college job like the statement can ever be 100% accurate in every situation. Whether a person would leave the NBA or not depends on the person. No broad statement can be true of every coach. People have left the NBA already to take over college programs. So again, it will depend on the individual.

People talk about how the NBA is a better job because coaches don't have to recruit or deal with boosters. They fail to mention, though, that NBA players can be much more difficult to deal with than college players. Many have large egos and are paid more than the coach. Many think they are more important than the coach. Lebron has reportedly been responsible for coaches being fired and hired. Some people would rather recruit and deal with boosters than deal with that.

I'm not saying Stevens would ever leave the NBA because I don't know him. However, making broad generalizations and assuming they are universally true is ridiculousness at it finest.

NBA coaches do not coach. They...well I am not sure what they do actually.

The best COACHES are in NCAA. If you want to COACH then you are the head coach of a college program.

In the NBA its a players league and you keep the stars happy or get fired.

The NCAA is a coaches league. If Brad Stevens wants the fame he coaches in college. Full stop.

That would hurt... Stevens may be the only coach to keep Duke relevant after K IMO.

However I personally think CBB is an ish show and no coach worth their salt would go from the NBA to college
As much as it pains me, I have to agree on this point. I don’t see any coach willfully leaving the NBA to take a college job with the way things are right now.
