Many good candidates out there, but we have one of the very best and cannot lose sight of that. Coach Cal has had a tough year, and made worse by returning only one player (which cannot be repeated!).
I want him to stay as our coach. All things considered, he is STILL the best current coach for us. But, he has to change the business model slightly. If it's truly a "players first" program, he has to do a better job convincing the ones on the bubble to be patient and stay with Kentucky until they are truly ready to become an adult. The NBA is a grown man's league. We have too many now on the growing list of kids whose careers were cut short or never had a chance to flourish because of their impatience. It is obvious that Cousins needed Cal's fatherly guidance more than any player--his immaturity is damaging his career and Cal should have been able to hold him back and teach him much more than just basketball. It is all about providing a sound and solid foundation for their chances at a long-term career, not one filled with problems and that is over after one year. Had Hagans stayed, we'd be a top five team and his chances at being in the NBA a long time would have been greatly enhanced.
Further, this business each year of not knowing who is coming or going makes the whole business model very, very weak.
Final thought for Monday...it was super satisfying to FINALLY see Kentucky Basketball again. That's what we expect. That's what we want. That's what gets us through a tough winter. That's what we live for. That is Kentucky Basketball!
