The 2020 NCAA Tournament is not going to be played over concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but there is still a chance an official bracket for the field of 68 could be released by the NCAA.

NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt told CBS Sports on Friday that the NCAA has not yet completely killed the idea of putting together a 68-team bracket for the purposes of an official recognition of the 2019-20 men's Division I basketball season. While far from a sure thing, it's still on the table -- offering hope to coaches and players across the country that they could at least potentially get formal recognition for the work they put into their seasons over the past five-plus months.

"We're hearing today there's interest from coaches and athletic directors from that," Gavitt said. "I wouldn't say we've shut down the idea completely, but there is, practically speaking, it's a bit challenging at this moment. ... There's pluses and minuses to any decision. If you put the field together, you could have teams, depending on that conference's policy, would not be the most obvious choice as the [automatic qualifier]. It's something we're going to continue to look at.

"This has been so fast, so emotional, we'll continue to think on it a little bit."

Gavitt's comments come after high-profile coaches such as Bruce Pearl, Bobby Hurley, Kelvin Sampson and others have lobbied for a release of the bracket.

Ridiculous idea, IMO. Meaningless and pointless to rub such a thing in to all the fans and schools if they do this. They may say it's to reward schools for good play this year but I don't see how that is myself. Hoping they don't do it, just let the season go.

If they do the simple way would be all regular season champions from their conference would be recognized and given a higher seed. But really other than recognizing the regular season accomplishments I see no other reason to have a bracket that’s not going to be played. Wasted energy and resources that could be used for something productive.

I say release them. Maybe it is a money grab at ratings but maybe it leaves the door cracked just a hair for something to happen.

They were a mess to begin with...its on, its on with no fans, some are off, we aren't off, we're off, the whole thing is off.

Lets not forget 75% of NCAA revenue comes from this event. It is all about money at end of the day- everything is in business.

Silly. I saw an article where someone released a bracket and tourney simulation. We lost in the sweet sixteen to Florida State. Michigan State won the whole thing.

I don’t like that simulation. I’ll just wait until I find one where Kentucky wins and that will be my canon 2020 results.

Put it out there....give the people a bit of the madness. Who doesn't like filling out a bracket?

What if you're a fan of Dayton or San Diego State?

It's easy for Kentucky fans to have this attitude because this happens almost every year.

Absolutely release it. Then UN Cheats officially don't make the tournament. It also provides record for those teams that rarely make the tournament.

I'm pretty disappointed that most of our fans agree with Roy. Roy doesn't want it released.

I absolutely wish they would release it. Even do a show. What else do we have to watch right now?

Then MAYBE, if things die down a little more quickly than expected, they could do the 16 team tournament they discussed.

Wishful thinking, I know. But in the scheme of things, playing a tournament seems a lot less crazy that what we are actually dealing with.

Oh I absolutely disagree. While it isn't important for most schools who will get in, for smaller schools, earning their way into the tournament is a big deal. Plus, some people will get some enjoyment out of arguing the matchups that would have been. I think they should release it.

Release it. School not out until end of May.

If things miraculously change in the next six weeks then play it in May.

I did say miraculously.

While I agree they probably wont, that article says they have not closed the door on that idea and are still considering it
No Gavitt said earlier in the day they are still considering it. Then Worlock shut that idea down later in the day. basically saying committee members had bigger fish to fry on campuses.

The priority for committee members then was to return home to tend to affairs on campus or conference offices."

This statement comes after NCAA senior vice president of basketball Dan Gavitt told CBS Sports that there was still a slight possibility of releasing a bracket in order to honor the 2019-20 men's Division I basketball season.

Well, that's not completely accurate. UNCheat could have won the ACC, though not likely, and made the Dance.

I'm for it if IU isn't in; against it if they are.

Seriously, a lot of the bubble teams are make or break depending on the conference tourneys. So releasing it now would be a mistake.

Glad it would be fun for you and some others but, to me, it's just another reminder of what could have been and has no real meaning. I really glad, truthfully, that you will enjoy it though.
