LOVE this writer
Updated (ok, set in the 70s) retelling of the classic story. I think it's well done and am enjoying it
ATPH provokes differing reactions from McCarthy readers. Those who started on Child of God or Outer Dark tend to dislike ATPH. Then you have those, like me, who started on ATPH and have never looked back.

I'm the opposite. I don't like the writing style but like the content.
Think I'm in the same boat. Believe it was Suttree that I had started about a year ago and found it difficult to know who was talking/narrating. Had to put it down. Maybe one of his other books would be better for me.I'm the opposite. I don't like the writing style but like the content.
I can recite from memory numerous passages of Solzhenitsyn’s “The First Circle.” I must have read it seven or nine times.
And here we are a hundred years later with legislators and churches still attempting to control freedom of thought.

Beautiful story written in a dialect dat makes ya feel likes ya be down in da lo country of Souf Calina. Root doctors and all.

I read it again after twenty years and was extremely impressed by how it holds up. Weiner is a great voice for scientists; he did a fantastic job with the earlier The Beak of the Finch.
Now reading, another re-read. I'm really digging this.
Yeats died this day, 1939. My favorite of his poems, "Their hearts have not grown old." Also, note that he counts the swans, 59 of them, and then pairs them off; he's the odd swan out. He was famously incompetent with women and put that in his poetry.
Yes, it's not about science or religion; it's about the right to think.

Quite amazing what humans can withstand in their fight for life.
Grann's writing is so descriptive at times that I could almost feel the motion of the ocean.
The story ends in such a manner that could make one feel like throwing up.

The Last Folk Hero (The life and Myth of Bo Jackson) by Jeff Pearlman, Must read for Bo Jackson fans. Great book for young kids because you can jump around the chapters.

Reading Amistad right now. Apparently the book is based on the movie and not the other way around. Still a great story.
I just finished Shift by Hugh Howie. The Silo TV show on Apple TV+ is based on the trilogy. I am about to start Dust which is the third book in the trilogy. They are fantastic reads. The TV show just finished their second season which covers the first book Wool.
