I don’t know why I thought of this, but remember those people who said Coach O didn’t play that big of a factor in recruiting after he left for a head coaching job?

I’m pretty sure after this last little resurgence in recruiting, it can be said that Coach O plays a bigger part than any of us realize. Coach Chin has proven to be really good as well! Coach Cal has picked it up again and looks like the Cal in 2009-2010!when he was out for blood!

With that said, come on down Boogie!

CAL, Coach O, and Coach Chin are getting it done this year without a doubt.

There's no doubt that O and Chin are pulling their weight on the recruiting trail.

Our recruiting was fine when O was not part of the program. I don't understand the thinking on this...
2015 - #1 recruiting class, 2 MCDAA
2016 - #1 recruiting class, 4 MCDAA
2017 - #1 recruiting class, 5 MCDAA
2018 - #2 recruiting class, 3 MCDAA
2019 - #2 recruiting class, 2 MCDAA
2020 - #1 recruiting class, 2 MCDAA
2021 - #5 recruiting class, 1 MCDAA

These are fine classes. 2020 season results were not fine. 2021 season results were not fine. But, if there was a drop in recruiting, it was from elite (best ever) to elite (not best ever).

We still got talent, I wasn’t saying that. But the talent we got after him was great, but not elite.

You have to be able to see the difference in talent we are getting now compared to before Coach O came back??

It wasn't directed at you specifically. I have seen several post on here that recruiting fell off when O left and that recruiting is picking back up with O being back. I would suggest that recruiting never really fell off. It has been great since CAL arrived. In fact, I could argue that CAL is the best recruiter in UK history and may be NCAA all-time.

The 2023 class is shaping up to be great as well with Dilly, Edwards, Ugonna and potentially DJ, Holland, et al. There is nothing to worry about with recruiting...and hasn't bee since CAL arrived in Lexington.

It did fall off, some. We still got a lot of talent but not the elite talent we now are getting again. We went awhile without any top 5 guys. Yes we were still getting top 10-20 guys but usually those top 3-5 are the studs and college ready. If we indeed land Wagner, that’s the first #1 player we’ve landed in a long time. And no Sharpe doesn’t count.

Both Skal and Boston were top 5 guys. It's ironic that both guys were huge busts at UK. But, as I recall all high D1 schools were recruiting those guys.

If recruiting "fell off" without O, it did so slightly. In 7 seasons without O, 19 MCDAA, the average recruit was ranked 22. Recruiting has never been an issue since CAL arrived at UK.

We will have to agree to disagree. Recruiting has never been an issue with Cal and never will. That’s fact. But getting in on certain players has picked back up again.

I’m glad you used Boston as an example. Pay attention and remember this conversation. Boston was a top 5 guy and so is Edwards. Boston was a bust and Edwards will be a top 3 pick. This will be the perfect example to show you when it happens.

"If recruiting "fell off" without O, it did so slightly."

This is simply not true.

UK RSCI recruiting

2009: top 5 Wall, Cousins
2010: top 5 Knight
2011: top 5 MKG, Davis; top 10 Teague
2012: top 5 Noel; top 10 Poythress, Goodwin
2013: top 5 Harrison, Randle; top 10 Young, Harrison, Johnson
2014: top 5 Towns

---------------------------
Antigua leaves for South Florida
----------------------
2015: top 5 Skal
2016: top 5 none; top 10 Monk, Bam, Fox
2017: top 5 none; top 10 Knox
2018: top 5 none; top 10 Montgomery
2019: top 5 none; top 10 Maxey
2020: top Boston; top 10 Clarke
2021: top 5: none; top 10 none
2022 - Antigua returns.

So the difference between Antigua presence here/not here is enormous.

When Antigua was here, we averaged 1.5 top 5 players per year and 2.5 top 10 kids per year.

When he left, we averaged .3 top 5 kids per year (80% drop) and 1.3 top 10 kids (48% drop) per year.

The difference is staggering.

It did fall off, not all classes are made equal. Not all 5* players are equal. The ones were were getting after O like a Khalil Whitney were not top 5 caliber no matter what number was beside their name. Devin Askew may have been a top rated PG but he wasn’t Teague level and a huge miss. Skal wasn’t anywhere near Nerlens/AD/KAT level.

Most of the top classes were because of quantity not quality. We had more turn over than anyone else.

Exactly Coach O is the man and anyone that say different don’t understand the recruiting side of basketball!

I agree with you but not on the Boston vs Edward’s point. It’s as if you are saying O would have known not to recruit him and that’s insanity.

Not sure if serious. Obviously we wouldn’t have fired 2 assistant coaches and brought in Chin and O if everything was peaches and cream. None of the players we have committed in 22 or 23 would be here if we still had those stiffs(Barbee and justice) on board other than Reed most likely.

Of course it's serious. Cal fired Barber and Justus because they weren't doing a good job on numerous duties. But, while they were asst coaches, we still secured 4 of 7 #1 classes...2 of the other 3 were #2 classes. Cal's recruiting classes were still great classes without o and chin...though falling short on top 5 commits.

And how many players were in those classes? Quantity trumps quality in recruiting rankings bub.

Yeah, I think Antigua is a much better scout than Justus and Barbee were. Guys like Skal and Boston contributed to #1 classes but were sorely overrated. On the other hand, under Antigua, we stopped recruiting top 5 recruit Quincy Miller because the staff knew we were going to get a fella named Anthony Davis who wasn’t rated just yet.

I understand how it works, captain.

I've already agreed that we landed more high-end (top 5) recruits in the first 6 years than in the last 7. I'm simply stating that we continued to have #1 recruiting classes without O. I agree that O and Chin are elite recruiters and Cal is a master coordinating and executing the recruiting classes. We have never had an issue with recruiting since Cal has been the coach in charge. There has not been another coach in UK history (arguably NCAA history) to recruit at his level.

It did drop off some. There is #1 and a big gap to #2, and then there is barely #1; those 2 aren't equal.
BUT....
You also can't pretend the shoe companies paying players to go to other schools did not have a BIG impact on that as well. For example we thought we were sitting good w/ Zion, then Nike stepped in and paid him to go to Duke. Relationship building can only get you so far. NIL allows us to somewhat level the playing field with the other big-time programs who were cheating.
