If the kid isn't ready, why should he announce?

To appease obnoxious message board fans of a team?

John Wall committed on May 20
Eric Bledsoe committed on May 5
Nerlens committed on April 19

Did all these guys like the attention and were they all selfish?

In fairness to Wall and Bledsoe, the coach they wanted to play for just made a huge coaching move a month prior. I'd say we're getting into the final hour of recruiting. But I do agree, it's their call, and it's a choice that could be the difference between millions and thousands..

As I said earlier, I certainly don't have any inside knowledge at all. But if what has been said about his parents strongly wanting him to choose Duke is true, I don't like that the decision will be made when he gets back home.

Does anybody think Bolden is waiting for a scholarship to open up at UK?

Also if true, who are they likely candidates to be leaving? Briscoe, Lee, or someone else?

So for those in the know, how does him not announcing impact our chances with him? Seems like a lot of the UK buzz was predicated on him announcing tonight.

No, I don't feel that this will have any impact on the decision at all. There's a 0% chance that he hasn't discussed it with his family before he left for the JBC, so that's a moot point. He probably went with the intentions of announcing at the game, is having reservations due to his friends from both sides being there, and maybe because his parents want to be sitting next to him when he announces (the traditional announcement, makes for a good family photo).
It has been speculated since about 11 pm last night that he may not announce at the game, even from UK's side of things, and UK still feels very confident that they land him. Whether Bolden initially told UK that he plans to announce his commitment to UK Friday, but has since changed the date and informed them of that, who knows. Welcome to the world of recruiting, I suppose.

Well I don't know what to tell ya. Leonard Washington did almost commit to UK and the South American PG story that was released wasn't written by Marc and it wasn't at TBK. Pilgrim... we never got to see in a game but judging by his time at Oklahoma State we can probably say he would've at least started at UK with Patrick Patterson, but also likely caused a fight or two.

As far as the Kenny Payne part. Do you know that story?... why that story was written? If so, then you're just trolling. If not, I don't care to explain it again although I really don't want to. There was a group of us that knew the story was a lie and was asked to be put out there to make Kenny's transition to UK easier. Word was getting out that he was gonna take the UK job and the fact that he was recruiting Jones to Oregon while UK was recruiting him also was gonna cause a major hang up in UK signing him when they wanted to. You need the whole thing with all the details? Marc knew perfectly fine Kenny Payne was gonna be the new coach, told the mods and a few members at the site that very thing, and then informed us he had to write a story to the contrary. He knew he'd catch **** for it but a certain assistant coach was his buddy.
So he lied to his subscribers who were paying him good money for what they thought was the latest in UK info so that he might maintain his sycophantic relationship with the assistant coach who was his "buddy". Sounds like a real prince of a person...

This is Fox's chance to seal the deal at the game. It's not often you say this, but this could come down to recruiting from our own team..

I hope he isn't playing us so we can't get Allen either.
He may know he's going to Duke and is waiting for Allen to commit to Texas or somewhere.
That would definitely give Duke the edge.

Maybe he wants to wait until the scholarship spot opens up at UK? That way he is not creating need for UK to "open up" a spot for him.

John Wall and Eric Bledsoe were waiting to see where Cal was going and who ended up where before they signed. Nerlens waited until he knew everyone that was going in the draft and yes he drug it out until the end with the haircut ESPN lead up for attention.

This. Only an asshat wants a recruit to rush something . Let the kid decide how he needs to.
Who TF said he should rush to judgement? If you are far enough along to consider announcing tonight then you know where you are going. His dad didn't say he was unsure...he just said it won't be announced tonight. The kid knows and should announce already so the JBC can be about every great player attending and not just the "Where is Bolden Going" show. Then again...maybe that is what he wants.

If we hear of someone leaving this weekend, that could be a sign. Of course, it's going to look just as bad for us if that happens, but I don't foresee whoever it is or a relative bashing Cal like Thornton's uncle did.

John Wall was going to play for John Calipari from day one. Everyone knew it. The least suspenseful recruitment I can remember, besides MKG. MKG's mother had to literallybeg schools to recruit him.

and Eric Bledsoe was playing at UK no matter what, be it for Gillispie or Calipari. The fact Calipari was also recruiting him while he was at Memphis just made it that much easier a choice when he was hired at UK. I know Bledsoe gave a quote saying that if he didn't go to UK he was going to Florida, and thay may be true, but he was UK all the way once he was offered. Always wanted the big stage and Glenn Cyprien was "helping" Bledsoe with his cell phone.

I do remember hearing that Bled would have played for Florida had Cal stayed at memphis, not that I think it's true.

All these situations are obviously not the same.

Some milk it. Some seem genuinely unsure. With some it may be a combination of both--they may know where they're going but like the perks you get when schools bring you in.

Sometimes it's just a byproduct of being an 18-/19-year-old kid. Having been around a lot of teenagers, I can attest that they usually can't remember what they ate for breakfast. The pressure that these particular teenagers are under from these coaching staffs--who most of the time have been recruiting them for literally years--would have to be immense. I don't envy them having to make these decisions. There's a good section in the book "Play Their Hearts Out" where Tim Floyd flips out on a kid after he doesn't pick Floyd's school. That's the ugly underside that none of us ever sees, but that adds to the pressure.

So these long, drawn-out charades don't bother me. At all. I sort of like the game-within-a-game that these recruiting battles bring. We were in way too few of them when Gillispie and Tubby were here; I like being in the mix even if we miss out on a few.

I don't mind waiting usually, but I am just nervous that even if he has chosen UK, the weekend could change things. I'd also be less worried if I thought we could get Allen if Bolden picks Duke. Oh well, I hope the game is better than the other two have been at least.

Bolden will be on the same team with Frank Jackson, Monk, and Gabriel. They'll be going up against Fox and Bam.

I don't follow recruiting all that much, if it doesn't involve Kentucky in some way... so this is the first time I've seen that HULK on the far right of the picture! Did a quick search, and that is Azubuike who is going to Kansas, right? Says he's 6-11 and 270. Looks bigger than that, in this photo. I don't think we'll see anyone pushing him around in the paint, very often.

That kid is only 16 (or just turned 17), so Self will have him for at least 2 years because he won't be age eligible for draft next year. The kid is a little raw but a freaking monster.

^ If those guys on the top line are your starters then I have to respectfully disagree.

Cannot imagine any scenario where Willis starts over Briscoe. I think Cal would love to play Willis in the position he was so good at last year: as a stretch 4. Might play a little on the wing but he isn't going to start over Briscoe IMO.

Bolden is not worth this much hand wringing. We have an amazing class signed as it is. This is more about beating out dUKe for a recruit than coveting this particular player. I hope we get him but he is not the next Anthony Davis.
