Two exceptional high school coaches on staff: Wager as the TE coach and Phil Simpson as a defensive quality control coach. Should help with both on-field performance and recruiting in both Texas (Wager) and Florida (Simpson), specifically the DFW metroplex and South Florida (Monroe, Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties).
Never hurts having two offensive line coaches.. Work really well with uncle Milty and Dan Young who had an outstanding record at Westside.
Seeing his old high school colleague get a 6M for 6 yr contract from TT probably helped him make the leap.
I'm surprised Simpson came here for only a quality control role...that's like only one step up from being a student manager basically.

Exactly. Wager was making $113,000 in Texas, but it's unlikely the Dade County School District was paying anything close to that for Simpson.

If you answered anything but “way lower,” think again. In Dallas, Texas, schools, for example, the starting full-time coach salary is $95,000, with the average about $20,000 higher than that.
They’re betting on the potential upside I’m sure. Good opportunities for them to get in to college coaching.

Wager becomes the eighth known full-time assistant on Rhule's staff, joining Marcus Satterfield (OC and QBs), Tony White (DC), Ed Foley (ST coordinator), EJ Barthel (RBs), Donovan Raiola (OL), Terrance Knighton (DL) and Evan Cooper (DBs).
The Huskers have yet to officially fill their receiver and linebacker coaching roles.
According to Stepp, Wager has a 206-100 career record as a Texas high school football coach and has made 17 straight playoff appearances with stints at Tolar, Kaufman and Arlington Martin.
As Inside Nebraska reported on Dec. 20, Wager has been involved in coaching the last seven Under Armour All-American Games in Orlando, as well as serving on the game’s board of directors.
Wager served on the Board of Directors of the Texas High School Coaches Association as well, which is something Rhule has drawn a strong connection to.
Rhule's first Nebraska staff has largely consisted of assistants he's worked with before. But Rhule also has shown a willingness to hire people outside of his circle to help him lead a new program.
A good example of that was at Baylor, where he hired three key power players from the Texas high school football ranks in Shawn Bell, Joey McGuire and David Wetzel. McGuire is now the head coach at Texas Tech and just beat Lane Kiffin's Ole Miss team in the Texas Bowl.
Bell, McGuire and Wetzel were instrumental in showing Rhule around his new surroundings and introducing him to who he needed to know. The result was a sped-up transitioning process and strong recruiting classes. According to Rivals, Baylor finished third in the Big 12 recruiting rankings in 2017 and fourth in both 2018 and 2019.
Now, Wager is the next former Texas high school coach who will help Rhule — this time at Nebraska.

While at Martin, Wager has coached some of the best football players in the country. This season, he had 4-star cornerback and LSU bound Javien Toviano, who is with Wager in Orlando for the All-American game, which will be played on Jan. 3.
He also coached former No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick Myles Garrett. In high school, Garrett was a 5-star player and had nearly 20 sacks as a senior. He would go on to play at Texas A&M before the Cleveland Browns selected him with the No. 1 pick in 2017.

A quality control position makes 100k+? That would surprise me. Steve Sarkisian and Butch Jones only made $35k as analysts at Alabama. I can't imagine Nebraska playing more than that for a quality control role.
Another high school coach? Seriously? WTF? I get the recruiting angle on this, but traditionally you hire coaches with, you know, college coaching experience and then task them with developing recruiting relationships with high school coaches. But now I guess the new thing is to skip that and just hire the high school coach directly.

i had to read this twice. i kept reading husker magazine. well, about the same thing i guess.
I'll say it again, I will take more coaches with unorthodox backgrounds if they bring in and develop guys like Bell, Turner, Allen, Westerkamp, Pierson-El, Enunwa etc. Don't mind if I do.

As we're all aware, Rhule was hired, in large part, based on his abilities to build programs. I'm going to trust in his abilities to do this, including his choices of assistant coaches, until he demonstrates he doesn't have that ability at NU. Before he's coached his first practice seems a bit early to start questioning what he is doing.
High school football in Texas is not high school football almost like the minor leagues, get that straight
great hire! I always enjoyed working with Bob. Really hard worker. Will help out with recruiting in the DFW area. Still won't be able to out-recruit Texass, A&M, or OU - but will definitely be able to pick up whats left.
