The rebels?

How to sports reporters still make this mistake in 2021? It was one things in the 90's when we were rarely on TV other than the 3 Dave's Network, but in today's day of the SEC Network there is no reason for a reporter to not be able to correctly identify the teams and mascots of each of the SEC teams.

Honestly it is because most of these reporters and writers are huge nerds who grew up playing Pokémon rather than watching football. I feel like even the most casual football fan can name most of your mascots for power 5 schools.

And even if you aren’t 100% sure, it is pretty easy to Google to check yourself.

So it’s a combination of being a nerd and lazy.

You're seriously underestimating how incompetent most sports writers and commentators really are. There's still a few good ones left, but not many.

I think the pokemon aspect is less important than just the fact that not many promising students go into journalism to begin with. Journalism was long the major with the lowest average ACT/SEC test scores and high school GPAs. And that was before a career in journalism meant low pay and low job security for all but the best/luckiest graduates. I can't imagine the type of student the average journalism major is now.
