And none of that had to do with the Butch Jones saga going on all year? That team quit week 5. Maybe he sucks, but I’m not using his UT stint as the barometer.

A lot of that returning experience was on the sidelines injured or playing out of position.

I'm concerned. Grantham had some flaws when we hired him but one thing you had to say was that his defenses stopped the run. Can't say the same about Shoop.

Haha. I just read he played football at Yale. How many of you 17ers went to Yale?

He has awesome talent to work with next year so we’ll find out quick. Come back and shame the **** out of me 12 months from now if he sucks.

Love the hire. I still would have rather kept Grantham but I think we hit a homerun after reading about his defenses and why Tennessee struggled with him as DC.

Why did he struggle to stop the run in 2016 with alot of returning talent ? He gave up over 400 yards rushing on the reg.

So far we have two former Fordham head coaches and a former Columbia U. head coach. I guess this means Mississippi is NYC's sixth borough.

Much better until the end of the season?
Ga Tech says different. This dude doesn't know how to stop SEC rushing. Proof is out there but some of you are choosing to ignore it.

Go look at UTs drives in that game. Nobody is stopping GT when the offense goes 3 and out every drive

He had 3 top 20 defenses at Vandy. But go ahead with your theory about how he doesn't know how to coach in the SEC. I'd like to hear more.

Shoop Tn = Diaz Tx.... only Shoop is much more experienced.

24 mo ago he was literally interchangeable with Dave Aranda as the hottest DC names out there

Saying that is a slight to Shoop. Manny was / is an average DC at best. Had 7 NFL players on the 2010 D and still barely cracked Top 25 or so in total defense. I think Shoop >>>> Manny. Much more proven.

I'm sorry that you have trouble reading stats, I, however, do not. But since you ask, 10 years coaching the number 1-3 defense in the league in peewee football.

The good thing is that Grantham used a 1-gap 3-4 which is similar to most 4-3 philosophies. Simmons was our NT, but he was a 1-gap player most of the time which allowed him to penetrate and make plays in the backfield. He will still be able to do that as a 1 technique DT in the 4-3. The 3-4 (2-gap) that most people think about is when you have the monster NT that eats up blockers in the middle to free up your middle linebacker to make a ton of tackles. That's not what we were running this past season.

It’s amazing how many people define a decade career on a single year. Diaz is not an “average” dc.

I’ll judge the man after a year with our defense. If the players come back that say they will, he will have incredible talent to work with. We could have done, we could have done worse, or we got a great DC. Time will tell.

It’s amazing to me how much more State message board posters know about the intricacies of defensive schemes than a guy that has coordinated top 25 defenses for 17ing Vandy.

Well this same 17er coordinated A **** show defense the last 2 years and runs a completely different scheme from last years top 10 Defense which we have the personel for so don’t pull this 17ing Gene’s Page BS like there isn’t any reason to be concerned. He might be alright but I think this hire 17ing sucks. The best thing I can say right now is he can’t be any worse than Peter Sirmon.

Embarrassed myself with factual evidence that he's not very good against the Run? Ok shorty. Shh, grown folks are having a discussion.

So in 5 of his last 7 years, he has had top 25 defenses. Three of those were in the SEC that you said he couldn't stop. In the two that he didn't, it has been shown that he dealt with multiple injuries. What is so miserable about you that you are dead set this is awful?

Here's the problem with the GT game...

UT gave up only 2 scores in the first half, and forced 2 3-and-outs to start the game. However, UT was only able to hold on to the ball for 18.5 minutes the entire game, and had 1 first down total in their first 4 drives. UT's lengthiest possession of the entire game was 3:21. They put their defense in a really bad position against a team that thrives on wearing you down.

I can understand being cautious about the hire, as I am in that boat.

But to be pissed is pretty unreasonable imo.

I'll wait to actually judge him as well. I certainly hope he's great. I would love that. I'm just concerned with the fact he had a difficult time stopping the run. The stats(facts) tell that story. Which dc do we get? I don't think it was an awful hire, just underwhelming, esp compared to our hc hire.

I'm not pissed. Just not excited. I was extremely excited about JoMo, this hire is just meh, to me. Giving up 400 rushing yards per game 3-4 per season will do that to me, I guess. Hopefully I'm concerned for nothing. We'll see.

Haven't looked up the details of the game but I do know TN scored 42 points and won. Not sure how they did that going 3 and out every drive.

Overall I'm good with the hire. Only thing that gives me hesitation is that all of the years that Shoop had successful defenses he had Brent Pry with him on the defensive staff both at Vandy and PSU. When Shoop left and went to UT Pry stayed at PSU and became the DC there. I hope the reason that Shoop's defense at UT fell off the table is not because Pry was not with him.

Not entirely different. Both run aggressive one gap schemes. And we used a lot of 4 man fronts this year.

That's what I was thinking...

It seems like most defenses use the personnel that fits the situation, and that a 3-4 or 4-3 label is nominal.
