Some of you asked for the full remarks from trustee Bob Peeler yesterday during the BOT meeting.

Here you go:

I found myself over the years riding down Gervais Street in Columbia and looking over at the Statehouse and seeing the Confederate flag flying on the grounds. And I knew that’s not the way it should be. But then I would ride on by and go about my life and not really think about it anymore.

On June 17th of 2015, after the murders of nine innocent people, including my friend Clementa Pinckney at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, you couldn’t ride by and not think about it anymore.

Five years later, as I ride by to go see my granddaughter between Saluda and Greenwood, outside of Ninety Six, I pass by the old home site of Dr. Benjamin Mays. And many times I would think about: “What did he go through to become an outstanding educator, an outstanding Civil Rights leader, and the president of Morehouse College?” And I would ride about my daily life and not really think about it anymore.

After May 25th of this year, and the murder of George Floyd, you can’t ride by and not think about it anymore. And I’m reminded of one of my favorite quotes of Dr. Benjamin Mays: “Every man and woman is born into the world to do something unique and something distinctive. And if he or she does not do it, it will never be done.”

Mr. Chairman, fellow board members: It’s time to do something unique and distinctive.

That was strong from Mr. Peeler. I am huge admirer of Dr. Benjamin E. Mays. He is the 2nd Black Man to have his portrait in the SC State House. He has over 50 Honorary Doctorate Degrees. My favorite quote of his
It must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life does not lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy of life lies in having no goal to reach.

I've always liked a quote from my all time favorite athlete, Hank Aaron, who said "A man's ability is only limited by his lack of opportunity." I always admired the integrity and dignity of Hank Aaron and the way he handled himself especially during his chase to break Babe Ruth's all time home run record. Several death threats were made against the life of this humble man just because of the color of his skin. I just can't imagine the hatred that was directed his way.

I was always embarrassed, for as long as I can remember, that the confederate flag was flown at the state house in the state where I was born. But I can honestly say that the confederate statues that are prominently displayed in Richmond never bothered me until more recently. I never put any thought into what they meant just more like hey the statues look cool, and I certainly didn't think how a black person would feel about them so prominently displayed in their home town or state. Now I understand how it would offend someone.

I am continuously searching for ways to open my mind and try to understand how other people may feel about things that don't necessarily affect me. It's an ongoing educational process for me, but one that must be continue as long as I'm alive.

The best way to educate ourselves is to continue having these discussions and challenge ourselves to surround ourselves daily with people that look differently than we do.

I’m thankful that the University took a stand. Although it took several decades, it’s never too late to do the right thing. This certainly was.

As much as I love my alma mater, there are certain things that made a lot of us uncomfortable. Imagine being a person of color and having a class in Tillman Hall-a building named after someone who wanted people that looked like you lynched. That never sat well with me as a student-athlete. I can also tell you that these are discussions we’d have in our dorms and apartments.

So I share this hoping that it will open someone’s eyes and give them a glimpse of what it’s like living in our shoes. Go Tigers.

Maya Angelou said it best:

“I did then what I knew how to do.
Now that I know better, I do better.”

This is one of my favorite quotes. Shared with me by one of my closest friends/co-workers. She's always paraphrasing - "Know better, do better". Speaks to the fact that we should always strive for improvement.

I think Dabo (esp in how he has evolved/grown as a head coach/public persona) is a great example of that willingness to grow - without changing or compromising who he is or what he believes.

TI has no longer become about Clemson sports but a mouth piece for liberals to spew their pablum. So, effective Sept when my subscription runs out, it will nor be renewed. I don’t have to pay for propaganda. I can watch CNN for free. And maybe Dabo will one day quit letting the inmates run the asylum

Most of this post is laughable, considering a large majority of this board is conservative, but that last sentence reveals a deep need for an awakening.

I truly understand how you feel, but you could also look at it like "that SOB said I couldn't do it and here i am sitting in "his place", getting a college education". It would make me laugh my *** off.

Again, I fully understand how you felt. I am not saying he was good person. Matter of fact, he was the opposite of that. But being an athlete, wasn't the greatest feeling, not just beating a team, but beating them on their home field.

If you really feel this way then good riddance. There are a wide range of opinions expressed on TI, some pretty conservative and some pretty liberal. I dont agree with all of them, and some make me kind of mad and make me want to argue. But, and this is the important part, I respect their ability to post their opinion and they should respect my ability to post mine.

And, when the threads get out of line they get zapped to the Round Table, which is good too.

With all due respect, you're one of the worst poster on the board, so I consider this addition by subtraction.

@cu1974 - WHAT happened to you between 10:23 am - 1:48 pm?!? Did you get into your daddy's liquor? Look at the full moon?

Maybe you should just pinch what you should be using for oxygen intake & scroll on by OR, even better, go back to using the orifice currently emitting so much hate for gas exchange?

Why wait til September? Cancel now.

Why wait until September? You should go ahead and deactivate your account now. Also, if you are an IPTAY member and season ticket holder, there is possibly still time for you to try to get your money back for the potential upcoming football season. I would strongly encourage you to try.

Man this saddens me to see some people post such hurtful things about people on a Clemson board. Run the asylum? You're talking about someone's child/children. I ain't a snowflake by any means. But I've shed so many tears on TI lately to know people have so many hateful feelings towards others.
