Based on history they would have been given out at the start of the season’s first game..
But this year is a Covid season..
Should have done better for sure BUT part of that was on the offense which had a horrible time of possession leaving the defense on the field for a long time.
not to mention they've scored a TD and directly been responsible for 2 more scores over the last 2 games
darn near equaling the amount of points the offense have scored all season on their own merit

Exactly. It’s been lost how much the D has done for the offense setting up field position a couple times or scoring one of the rare TDs for the team.
Offense looks much worse if you remove those plays (at least 3).
Yeah but they also had to play 90+ snaps. I put more of the blame on the coaching staff and offense for their inability to sustain several drives and win the time of possession battle. I cant expect them to keep the opponent's yardage low when they were forced to be on the field so often. The defense did well with the situation they were given.
If they had alt jerseys made they’d want to use them before more games get canceled.
If the offense had done their job as predicted when Frost came here we would of had 51 points, 600 yards of offense and ten minutes more possession time and the defense would not have looked so bad.
We actually have a pretty stellar record using the alternates against Illinois. Other teams not so much.
I am glad the blackshirts have been handed out. They are deserved. PSU actually has a good offense with playmakers and a good offensive line. To be sure, the offensive line, which was expected to be a huge strength of the team this year, has underperformed with regard to those lofty expectations. Nevertheless, if you throw out the Maryland game - - a huge "brain fart" game on the part of the entire PSU team which just did not show up to play - - the PSU offense actually moved the ball well in the second half against OSU and did very well against a solid Indiana team. And sure... if Levis had started instead of Clifford then PSU may have beaten us. But Clifford was the starter against those other teams as well, and did ok.
The bottom line is this: our defense played well enough against both NW and PSU for us to win those games. And the only reason we lost to NW and almost lost to PSU was the ineptitude of our offense. Our defense came through big time at the end of the game against PSU and saved our butts.
Finally, it must be remembered that we are starting a new defensive line, other than Stille, and it takes time for defensive lineman to mature. Even the great Suh was not a force to be reckoned with until his junior year. My prediction is that this defense is only going to get better and better with time. And if we can get our offense clicking we will definitely be a team to be reckoned with.

Giving this defense blackshirts after Saturday disgraces all prior Blackshirts. I look at this almost a participation award, which is almost meaningless.

Isn’t the origin of the Blackshirts just the starters on defense but the fan base has turned it into “only All-Pro NFL Defense” should get it?
Those alternate uniforms they advertised were for away games not home games.. They won’t wear white jerseys and black pants at home..
So they will either wear them against Ioway or Purdue..
Personally I think they need to keep the Blackshirts process simple. Give them out to the starters for the opening game during the week before that game. All those attempts to play psychological games as to when/if the Blackshirts are handed out is too complicated and counterproductive IMO. The Blackshirt tradition is for the players not to appease the judgement of fans which will never agree on anything as a group.
Like others have said, if your talking history, then they should be assigned before the first game to the defensive starters.

I wouldn't go as far as a disgrace. They struggled to stop the long time consuming drives, but did not allow points on the last two drives. I was frustrated and aggravated at this, but they are hitting people, not giving up the big plays, and are not quitting. Can't this about the last 5+ years teams.
I hope they wait to wear the Alt uniforms until they string a couple of games together with respectable results.
