I watched them play Maryland and they couldn’t move the ball. They are using their third and fourth string running backs. Yes they have talent but 500 yards.
We couldn't stop their run all the time and their O line protected extremely well until later in the game. Their QBs are very athletic and the backup QB is pretty darned accurate in the passing game. Couple that with an NFL caliber WR and a highly recruited freshman RB and you've got lots of threats to worry about on defense. PSU got LOTS of opportunities to put up yards and our defense manned up especially in the red zone. I was VERY happy to see us be able to get red zone stops against a team playing big boy football.

I'm not calling this a premier Blackshirt defense but man we held PSU to field goals and stopped 4th down tries in the red zone. At this point of the development of all those young guys playing right now I think we should take it.

We have to stop blitzing with players that are 15 yards off the LOS. No way they can get home.

We don’t see practice. We have seen Adrian make stupid throws, inaccurate throws, etc when taking his training wheels off. No reason to believe the same wouldn’t happen with McCaffrey.

No reason to believe it would happen with McCaffrey.

Agreed, Their most successful blitz is the corner from the blind side that makes it home the others still don’t get to the QB soon enough...

Milton's mind and run threat were the biggest things UCF had going for it. The dude was a baller. IMO Luke will give us similar results given time.
Hope so. He’s only played one full season as a QB in his senior year of HS. Definitely lots of room to grow.

CFB has evolved into a game of shootouts. Even true when the SEC, Clemson, and Ohio State are involved. If our offense didn’t suck yesterday we win by 4 touchdowns.

When I say serviceable, I don’t necessarily mean the defense can’t be really good. Just that the fast pace offense doesn’t give them rest, so no matter how good they are they’ll get tired. Just like yesterday.
When have we run a fast paced offense? Maybe they don't get a rest because they can't get a stop for long periods of time.

You know what they gave up a lot of yards, but they got the stops they needed. Been a while since we could say that. Bend but don't break to a T. Tremendous job across the board. DL brought the juice at the very end of the game when it was needed!

No pressure for most of the game then they started getting close in Q4 and actually got to him a couple times right at the end. What were we doing different ? Man to man coverage ?

The fact that we don’t try those throws is reason to believe he can’t consistently make them.

Or.....I don't know......he's stretching for snaps going for the south 40........or running from a DE who has bad intentions.......or----and this is a longshot----IT'S HIS FIRST FRIGGIN' START AS A D1 QB.

Or maybe you're right......there's a massive body of evidence that he can't make the throws.

Pedo-U had their way with our defense, but managed to screw up more than us with their turnovers.

If they kept running the ball instead of passing the last 2 red zone trips, they win

Yes they had 500 yards and did outgain us, but we actually had them by 3 yards at half until Scott went power conservative. I doubt we see that again and hopefully we come out and execute and get this thing rolling. If we win convincingly next week, it could set us up pretty well to keep it rolling til the end of the season. Just keep progressing. I am not going to apologize for a win and hopefully we start racking up a lot of them. As much as we want to *****, it isn't like we are getting blown out all of the time. We've lost a ton of one score games and if those start to turn around, the narrative is going to change quickly.

shorter field to defend for one thing. Blitzes for another although we were doing that earlier.

Defense produced 10 points on the long INT return and strip-sack/fumble. Then kept PSU out of the end zone on 8 plays from inside the 13 yard line! PSU got 8 cracks at it in the last few minutes and could not get in.

Game ball to the Blackshirts from me!
On the money !

Weird how my original post on this topic (quoted below) has somehow morphed into me claiming there’s a massive body of evidence that he can’t make those throws.

Original post:
“Pass blocking seems to be the main issue, and I’m also not sure we have a QB who can make the downfield throws that made Milton’s UCF offenses click.”

I then said the fact that we don’t try those throws “is reason to believe he can’t make them.” Never did I say there’s a lot of evidence of it. I never said he can’t make them. Just that I’m skeptical and he’ll need to show he can before I blindly believe he can. Most college QBs can’t.

The "massive body of evidence" remark was pure sarcasm. There is NO evidence that LM can't make any kind of throws because he's had one damned start.

Got the chance to rewatch the game. Ty Robinson still has a long ways to go. Some plays that were blamed on Garrett Nelson were actually plays where Ty Robinson or someone else on the DL didn't hold their assignment.

I believe Ty Robinson got the lowest score on the defense on PFF, and that confirmed what I saw. He's at about the level Ben Stille was last year and gets pushed back a lot on run plays. Ben Stille has improved a lot this year and has held his ground a lot better. Ty Robinson needs to learn the same thing. Casey Rogers wasn't much better. One guy who I was impressed with who used leverage properly was Keem Green. I'd like to see a lot more of #4 and #93, and they can rotate in at NT. Ben Stille and Ty Robinson are DE's, not NT's.

The main issue is the reluctance to take the training wheels off as it pertains to the vertical passing game. The end.
agree, but now I think they can start to explore how it works with Luke running it.

In some ways, it feels like week 2 on offense, so maybe we have room to grow there.
