Is it his right to ask for a redshirt? Sure. I don't even disagree with him asking for it. But you do that before gameday.

You've practiced all week with the team for a game, and then decided to bail on them before kickoff without any chance of installing an alternative plan. You've allowed a gameplan to be installed that relies on you doing your part, and then decide to let your team swing in the wind without you?

Definitely should be stripped of his captaincy, without a doubt, at the very least. Those aren't the actions of a captain.

Hate to say it, Rujheyl, but if his skin were lighter, everyone’d be saying the same thing as you.

Do not assume anything. Regardless of skin lighter or darker, walking up to the coach after a week of letting everyone think you are playing and back out at kick off is real LOW. That may work in your world but not in mine.

Do players get to decide for themselves whether or not to play (and thereby safeguard their redshirt) or was this just the interim coach being accommodating to a player request?

If a player decides not to play without the blessing of the coach, is the player’s scholarship in jeopardy?

It doesn’t seem right that a scholarship player should be able to decide on his own not to play.
