For the longest time he was THE VOICE of college basketball. Growing up in Pike County I'd get to see one national broadcast a week, on NBC with Dick Enberg, Packer and Al Maguire. Other than that I'd get the UK game, usually on tape delay, and the occasional ACC game on Raycom.

SIAP but for as long as I can remember people would complain that Billy should spell his last name P(ACC)ker

Also, someone told me they heard Nantz teasing him about his ACC bias during a commercial and Packer getting all testty about it.

Do you remember some of the legendary arguments between Al and Billy back in the day? I recall one, in particular, over playing in a conference as opposed to playing as an independent. I think emotions were flying high that day. Al had coached Marquette, which was an independent at the time.

You should start telling him about how you used to have to listen to music in these shiny things called CDs and how your phone was attached to the wall.
Oh lands. I still use CDs some. And I’ll be honest I prefer the sound quality at times.

But digital definitely wins for walking and exercising. Nothing like trying to walk with those Sony Walkman CD players and getting annoyed with the constant skipping.

Did any of you guys know that in the Kandas-North Carolina game mentioned in this thread, UNC's starting guards got in a fistfight right before the game?
Really? Talk about team turmoil. I wonder if that’s ever happened at UK? I know some of our guys haven’t always gotten along but that’s crazy.

All I know is Billy ************ called Allen Iverson "a tough little monkey" and that he could be very annoying. But RIP.

Damn. He can’t even see the irony here.
Yeah I do see the irony here. I should probably be more respectful. But I'm not gonna just act like I loved him yesterday but the moment he dies we gonna see his greatness now. I'm not gonna do all that, but you're welcome to do so. I do hate it for his family. I'm sorry if this rubbed you the wrong way.

I don't think he hated UK. I just think there was a prevailing feeling among ACC folk that their conference was clean and the SEC handed out hundred dollar bills to all its players. I worked for a a UNC guy who played with Billy Cunningham who always rolled his eyes when he heard SEC. That guy liked UK. Said he used to love going to UK-Florida games just to watch Robey and Phillips blow people up setting screens.

He was an ACC shill, but he was the voice of the big game during the 90's. My formative UK experiences included him calling the game.
He was that..
What was it that changed? I remember there was a controversy over something

Interesting. I had a close friend, who passed away a few months ago, who told me that a UNC transfer told him that cheating was rampant in Chapel Hill back in that time. Yeah, it is second hand information but he went into great detail on the facts. Considering the fact that UNC had the "overground railroad network" in NYC, I have no problems believing that UNC has always been crooked.

Boy. He HATED UK.

My Dad might be getting in a fight up there tonight. He couldn’t stand Packer.

All that aside. He was a legend in the sport. Prayers and condolences to his family and friends.
He sure paid compliments to the 98 team .

What did he do? Got behind every game. Didn't call time outs. Not as strategy, he just didn't call timeouts. Mass subbing for no reason. That team coached itself and took Tubby along for the ride. It became more evident every year after that. After '98 a Tubby coached team never beat a team higher than a 6 seed in his career.

That’s silly. He identified the mismatch between turner and wojo in that duke game and told turner to go to work. That’s what turned the game for us.

Tubby was a good coach. He’s probably a better in game coach than cal. His issues were preparation, motivation and inconsistent recruiting.

Apparently you don't remember Mike Patrick doing duke games. Heck, he would love on duke when he wasn't doing their games. I liked Patrick, but he was without a doubt the most biased announcer I have ever heard.

I do agree with you that Patrick was in love with Duke. But, I never recall when Duke was losing for Patrick to start screaming that if Grant Hill or Laettner was on court, the other team would be getting dominated. Packer had a special kind of bias that irritated me heck out of me.

that guy throws you off. he slurped on duke so much. yet in ncaa football and especially nfl he was a great announcer. he always knew the background on all players. the duke stuff preceded his later college work. it was either sunday night or thursday night footballl where he was best.

Sad news. I always liked Packer. He did some games with Gary Bender back in the day and those two made a good team. Still remember his takes on our 98 game with duke. "He's hurting WoJo!"
"Kryzezewski would like to call a timeout here but he doesn't have one". "Scored 62 in a high school game once, he must think he's back in Boston"
I can’t think of many games outside Fox Vs. UCLA where a guy dominated like Turner did that game. Monk went off Vs. UNC but against anybody they threw at him. Fox pretty much dominated Ball the entire game.

I don't think there was a clean conference in the country. The SEC was probably the worst because there were so many members that took sports so seriously, especially in football.

I think DeAaron has always taken the Lonzo Ball hype personally. He continued to torch him every time he faced him in the nba too.

Fox has turned out to be a much better player. Which i really didn’t think was that hard to see coming but the Lakers GM sure didn’t see it lol.

Anyone else feel like they could do a better job than a lot of these nba gm’s? I’m critical of coaching but i know i couldn’t do a better job tbh. I’d have no clue where to start in terms of preparing a team for a season or what a practice routine should include. But damn i feel like i could do a better job drafting and putting rosters together than a lot of these GM’s.

Packer and MacGuire. By themselves, just okay....but together they clicked like few others.
God's peace to friends and family. RIP Mr. Packer.

You shouldn't speak ill of the dead because they can't defend themselves.

So I'm having a cocktail with triple the bourbon called for and keeping my mouth shut.

All the big schools are dirty somehow, you have to skirt rules to be good, I think some are flat dirty like outright paying people like the FBI teams but I’m sure the UNC, UK, Duke figured out ways to get guys what they wanted somehow off the record. Maybe a car, clothes, money for no show jobs. Ect.

I think the dirtiest are the schools/coaches with the most pressure from the fan base. Good examples, UK in the 80s when U of L rose to prominence. UNC in the late 80s when Duke started surpassing them. Arizona when Miller couldn't make a Final Four. U of L when Pitino was 1-8 against Calipari. All it takes is for the coach to tell someone "just get me the talent and I'll give you a banner to hang."
