Biggest Surprises in 2018?

Who is going to surprise everyone and either steal a starting job or be 2nd string and play a lot of minutes that most people on here truly do not expect to even play much at all?

Some players have flashed potential, but due to inconsistency or due to the previous coaches, they have not gotten a chance in games. Some payers might have been the "Spring Game Warrior" that flashed during that game, only to never be seen or heard from again.

Might end up being a list of walk-ons...

QB - Andrew Bunch (Highlights from his Arizona JUCO are pretty good. Good foot speed.)
RB - Wyatt Mazour (Rewatched his spring game highlights... not really impressive, but has potential)
WR - Conor Young (Has the speed)
TE - ?
OL - ?
DL - Chris Walker
LB - Quayshon Alexander
DB - ?

RB - Wyatt Mazour I could see this
WR - Tyjon Lindsey
TE - Not sure about this one maybe Austin Allen
OL - Boe Wilson and Michael Decker
DL - Ben Stille
LB - Parnell Jefferson

Bunch and Mazour are really nice fits in this offense
I could See Bunch as the #2 guy
If youve ever watched Mazour play in HS- he is perfect in the slot or that hybrid slot/RB position in this offense. Jet motion or shift into a near 2 back set- lots of RPO options with a kid like this- and when schematically he has to be covered by a LB- forgetabout it. :D

He is very explosive, great body control, good wiggle, freakish athlete.

Fullbacks- OTOH- not sure where you guys are going to see the field much at all.

I like Conor Young, but Frost has dramatically improved the talent and depth at WR. I think his snaps will become far and few between.

Yes he has!

I agree with you, but I do wonder about what Frost means when he says the walk-ons will have the same opportunities as the scholarship players.

Can the Mazours and Youngs actually get a legit opportunity to at least show what they can do?

And if they get the opportunity, are they just not as good as the new scholarship guys, so they still won't play?

What I am excited about is the fact that maybe we will win games by the end of the 3rd quarter now, so the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stringers will actually get to play to show some stuff.

YES they will
Frost SAID his practice approach will not have kids standing around
He is going to have MULTIPLE full team stations so everyone can get work, get better and be evaluated
This is one of the very first things he addressed.
Will walkons be starting all over and "save the day"?
Nope, but you can expect some surprise kids make impacts and push starters AND get into games and add value.

I take him at his word, and really believe walk ons will get a fair shake. But Conor Young isn't really on par with former walk on's like Brandon Reilly or Todd Peterson or even a Ross Pilkington.

Young has excellent speed, but he's a bit one dimensional. He's not a great route runner and his hands really halted the past staff for trusting him in the vertical passing game. A guy like Bryan Reimers will likely see his snaps go down, but he still has a niche because of his size and he blocks well. I just don't think Young will fit into the mix.

I think Mazour will definitely get a fair shake though. He's the kind of kid who is dangerous in space. The last staff had no clue how to evaluate or use running backs.

Matt Farniok. He caught a lot of grief after a bad outing playing injured against NIU. But he is a prototype RT and I could see him locking down that spot and having a great season.

Maybe they work him into short route where he gets the ball within 5 yards, either side, of the line of scrimmage.

I don't have a clue whether or not he is elusive with the ball in his hands, but have just heard from other players' comments over the last couple years that he is pretty fast. Not sure whether he blocks well either.

Sure gotta love these weapons coming in on offense though. Like you mentioned in another thread back in December, UCF had 20 different players get a hand-off and 10 different players ended up with double digit catches.

Those numbers tell me me that our top 4 RBs and top 10 WRs/TEs better be ready to play. So many players will get a chance in a system like this.

I suppose it will be quite a bit easier for good quality walk-ons at those positions to stand a chance at getting some playing time. I do think that there is a chance that the UCF numbers are skewed a little bit due to their margin of victory and letting the 3rd and 4th stringers into the game in the 4th quarter to get stats.

Our 3rd and 4th stringers should be pumped by this hire...they might actually get to play on the field instead of just running in/out of the tunnel and stretching. They might even get some repetitions in practice!!

This might “surprise” them based on the last few years. Winking

We have a lot of short, fast receivers but we also need guys who are big bodied and can go up and make plays and Reimers is that guy. I think there was more going on than just his play that was limiting his playing time last year.

I don't think Reimers is a particularly good blocker. I know he got yanked and chewed outlast season for poor blocking effort. He does have great hands (normally) and can be a size mismatch but I really don't see him getting a lot of snaps

Reilly runs a 4.2-ish 40 at 6'1".
Reimers' Hudl site says 4.7 and 6'5".

Besides speed and height, they may be the same as far as playing the position goes. I don't know much of anything about Reimers.

What makes you say he is as good or better than Reilly? BR was blazing fast, was a multiple year starter and plays in the NFL.
