We can’t recruit well because we haven’t won with this coach. Simple. And we have no recent great history (the Flood Years??!!) Unless we schedule non-conference cupcakes...which we will be doing next year. But very few will care if we beat Liberty, Mass, Buffalo, Texas State. A flawed strategy—not designed to build a program but rather to continue to deceive a clueless AD and some blind die hard supporters that you are building a program

When you p[lay PSU,OSU,MSU and Michigan, the OOC cupcakes don't make a difference.
The mighty Mercer are on Bama's schedule in 2017
Then the next year , look out for the Citadel.
We can find cupcakes on most every teams schedule and use them to fit the agenda were are following.
Build a program capable of winning the B1G East and no strategy can be called flawed. Unless your agenda is to find fault.

Serious question - why does Wisconsin not get higher ranked classes? These guys went 12-1 last year! They should be bringing in top 15 classes
A lot of highly rated recruits come from the southeast, Texas, and California where it's warm. Wisconsin in the winter is probably a tough sell to them. Most five and four stars that will play in the cold would probably pick a school like Michigan before going to Wisconsin.

Maybe Maryland can sign a few more "star recruits" so they can beat us next year. For all the recruiting hoopla they've received they lost to us, missed a bowl and only went bowling in Year 1 of Durkin because their schedule had more cupcakes than a Rachel Ray Christmas party.

Congrats on barely beating us this year with our literal 5th string QB playing.

How does that explain Maryland's horrific defense?
Wasn't your head coach who always has that disturbing grin on his face a defensive coordinator? Hell, RU's putrid offense put up 31 points on you guys, and Penn State dropped 66 points.

It doesn’t, but don’t start acting all high and mighty like you guys are above us. We beat Texas and likely would have made a bowl this year if we kept even one of our two best QBs.

Not worried about our talent level or our head coaching (though I agree our defensive coaches need to go), but I am worried about our brutal schedule year in and year out. Oh well — gotta beat the big boys to be a big boy.

Since we started playing you we are 2-2 versus Maryland. So tired of hearing how good Maryland is. And last year you made a bowl playing a terrible OOC schedule.

That's not how it works. No one cares who is hurt. Find a way to win. Our best offensive player and defensive players were out that day.

LOL doesn’t matter whose hurt? Tell that to Florida State. Or the Packers. Or any team that loses a good starting QB to injury. It matters a hell of a lot.

B1GTerp aside (LOL), who has come here and said how good Maryland is? We’ve have a few good recruiting classes that should set a very strong foundation, but it’s also untrue and far too early to declare that our coaching staff isn’t good either (the only reason I responded here in the first place).

No doubt you guys are "winning" in recruiting, but perhaps DJ is another Brady Hoke, or hell, even Jim Harbaugh, stocked with talent and perennially under performing. RU fans can only hope that is the case. That's why I don't get too excited or worried about recruiting "rankings." There are the elite recruiting teams like Ohio State and Penn State in our division (maybe Michigan too), and then the next two tiers (Maryland/MSU) then RU/Indiana, and for those two tiers, coaching and development will make a bigger difference than the purported "talent" level based on high school performance.

We have quite a few self-loathing fans that like to whine and cry about our "rankings," when, IMO, there is a very marginal difference among the teams that are not elite. At least that's the way I see it.

Whatever the case, RU and Maryland (and Indiana) will be stepping on each others' backs to claw their way out of the B1G East basement. Not an easy climb for any of us.

There is the money thing, but I sometimes wonder if Maryland would have been better off staying in the ACC. RU's choice was a no brainer.

No, we would have been far worse off staying in the ACC.

...take a look at who our QB was that day and how the last regime left our program. You get zero sympathy points because we could easily make the same argument (number of our best players were out too and our QB was a 1-offer 3rd-stringer to start the year).

I think he is saying the Problem is we have multiple cupcakes on the schedule next year: Buffalo, Texas St., Kansas. So wins against these bottom feeders really don’t impact Recruits or building fan interest. I know , I know we have to play who is on our schedule.
Need to start beating or being more competitive with the mid level or higher B1G teams to attract the Recruits.

One way to look at that question is to realize that the ACC got its act together because of the Maryland departure. It shocked the crap out of them for a founding member to leave. Since then they have shored things up by doing things like negotiate better contracts and lock in members with a GOR.

The post-Maryland ACC is a lot stronger and financially more viable than what it was when Maryland left. At that time a common message board theme was the debate over which would survive, the ACC or the Big 12.

Maryland was horrible on defense. No excuses here.

Lost our best defender (Jessie Aniebonam) in week one and things just snowballed.

Agree completely. The defense was pathetic. But having the nth string quarterback also meant the offense didn't stay on the field very long. That had the effect of wearing down an already weak defense, both in the per-game and per-season level. So yeah, losing the two good QBs did have an effect on the defense.

Based on the look-test alone, Its hard to believe that the defense on opening day at Texas was the same defense on the field at the end of the year.

edited to add: I love Knight Shift's comment about the disturbing grin, LOL.

Irons sharpens iron, and being in the B1G East will pay dividends in the long run for Rutgers. You have a very good, young coach who has the potential to build a legacy. Watch the national press focus on Rutgers once you start to upset a couple B1G stalwarts. The 4 and 5 stars will follow.

What cuts to the bone is Maryland's 6 4* recruits. Only Indiana's class is similar to ours.

and they got a 5 star Transfer on top of that.

However, we played them and the talent gap isn't that great, so I am thinking that the Maryland Rivals site is ranking them too high, just like our Rival sites always ranks our players too low.

Stars don't necessarily equal performance but as I said in a previous post, most of Durkin's best talent (on paper) has barely seen the field.

Particularly on the defensive side

Too early to say if the talent is or isn't overrated.

The team sites have little to nothing to do with rankings. The National guys do them. The team site guys can answer questions or give a little input on how a kid is/has been doing but they don’t take part in the rankings meetings.

Interesting that after 2 full recruiting cycles (prior to the 2017 season) that Durkin's recruits haven't seen the field. That in of itself should tell you about their talent. Most new coaches want "their" guys on the field at all costs.

I know they are only soph's or RS freshmen, but if they were such an upgrade in talent on paper or otherwise they would have seen the field.

Too bad they weren't healthy. I never heard of either one though and I can name several QBs who were decent in our conference.

They're both pretty good, I think. But the more important thing is that they are both legit P-5 quarterbacks that aren't one-dimensional, even if they turn out to be no better than decent. That makes a big difference.

Them and MSU always are cited blindly for classes with only 3* players yet both schools get more 4* every year than we have in 5, don’t know where these myths started
I don't follow recruiting much but I don't think it's a myth. I haven't looked any time recently but I had in the past during Bielema's tenure and they weren't recruiting that well by rankings which I disregard anyway but if you like them many times they were lower than you'd expect considering their performance. I'd say the same for MSU in the earlier part of Dantonio's tenure.

You might not see it at first but you have some sustained success over a longer period your recruiting will likely get a bump. It's what they did in the past with less heralded recruits that allowed them to get a bump in the present. You're seeing the fruit now but not the sustained period of relative success that led to it. People just remember that and apply it to today though.

Durkin was hired in December 2015. I'd hardly say that either he or Ash had a full recruiting cycle that year. Even so, several of the players he snagged in that class did play this season. But it's the two full-cycle classes he's recruited since that abbreviated cycle that has gotten the attention and high ratings. They're the ones who red-shirted/still in high school.

The widely accepted belief in NCAA football is that the way to build a solid program is red-shirt as many freshmen as possible. Durkin most certainly takes this long view, and held freshmen out when they could have contributed, especially when it comes to big bodies on the defensive line. Our message board was full of comments like "Why isn't ___ playing?"

LOL I rarely post on this one, I usually only post on the Round Table. I posted in this thread, just the rankings for the whole B1G and wehre RU and MD would be in we were in another division or conference.

Anyways, we had two QB's both were hurt, NO one cares why we lost and we only won 4 games. That sucks. However to still land a top 20 class is great by DJ. He's coached two seasons. I'm not going to pronounce any judgement on him except that he can recruit and is likable by the fans and players. Every other team in the top 25 recruiting is going to a bowl. So as far as I am concerned, the winning isn't here, but he is getting recruits, every winning team says you got to recruit well to win. Well DJ is doing that.

I posted the SEC West and SEC East, and B1G West to show how competitive it was top to bottom. Indiana, Rutgers and Maryland are in the bottom half of the division but still in the top 40 recruiting. If Maryland continues to recruit this way, it should be more in the middle with MSU than the bottom. For now there has been no noticeable separation from the bottom three. Someone will have to sweep the bottom two and take out PSU/MSU/OSU/UM to make a move.

Even massive improvements may not show up for quite a while because of the division we play in.

I didn't say Durkin's recruits haven't seen the field.

The 2016 kids played a ton.

I said Durkin's best talent (2017 class) barely saw the field.

Honestly, this is the year where I start to judge Durkin.

Short of major injuries (again), he should have enough of his kids playing significant roles to make a fair assessment.

Lots of inexperience at certain positions but lots of raw talent (on paper)

Should be interesting.

I absolutely agree. I believe at a minimum 85% of classes should be redshirted. I was merely responding to a post about Durkins recruits not seeing the field. That previous post has been clarified.

No need to hate on Maryland. They are doing extremely well with recruiting. Truth is that Maryland was in the ACC since it was formed in the 1970's.

Their resume is very good:

  • National championships: 1951 (retroactive), 1953
  • Atlantic Coast Conference championships: 1953, 1955, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1984, 1985, 2001
  • Southern Conference championships: 1937, 1951
  • Undefeated regular seasons: 1893, 1951, 1953, 1955, 1976
  • Undefeated conference seasons: 1937, 1943, 1949, 1951, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1984, 1985
  • Bowl appearances: 1947, 1949, 1951, 1953, 1955, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1990, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2016
There are SUPPOSE to be ahead of us! Now if Indiana was blowing us away in games and recruiting, I would be worried.

Wonder how we would have done in the ACC? Would this class rank pretty high in the ACC or would we not get this quality a class if we were not in the BIG East? A conundrum but we are where we are and we are who we are. But disheartening to see the gap in the BIG East widening.

I believe marylands recruiting has improved since coming to B1G

I like the Twerps. They are one of our rivals for sure in the same B1G division. Several exciting games in the last four conference matches have been fun to watch.

I especially like the pregame handshake when Stefon Diggs and his two teammates stuck out there hands. Then when Christian Hackysack stuck his right hand out, all three Terps left them hanging. Better yet, they beat the team that enables pedophiles that day.
