I think it's a good change and am happy that it is the B1G that has proposed it. In this era of footloose coaching staffs - the coaching carousel as it's often called - it is blatantly unfair to penalize athletes whose coaches have left (without penalty). And as we've noted hundreds of times on these boards, we're talking about 18-22 year olds for the most part, an age when most of us change our minds about most things.

I wonder how this proposal is viewed by the SEC, ACC, B12, and Pac12. Also, I wonder if the proposal would apply to all divisions - FBS, FCS, D2, D3, etc.

You shouldn't be allowed to follow a HC if he leaves.

HCs would us it a leverage for higher pay. "I want a million more or I am taking 20 starters with me."

Trust me, it would happen. You think it hard now to coach? Schools would need to hire GM to manage all the guy coming and going evey year.

Why not allow players to leave? If a professor leaves an institution, there is no restrictions on the grad students in their labs from transferring.

I didn't say they couldn't leave, they just can't go to the school their HC is jumping to

How would all of these players (20 of them in your example), who are hypothetically following their coach to another school, be on scholarship at the new institution given the limit of 85 schollies?

I think instead HCs should have non compete clauses in their contracts that require they sit out a year

This shouldn't be that complicated.
It's a very simple solution:

All transfers sit out a year - no exceptions.
All transfers immediately eligible - no exceptions.

Note - keep grad transfer as a separate class regardless and immediately eligible.
"Graduate" is a clearly defined line to cross.

I was reading in the Athletic that those were the two options the B10 put forward originally but then withdrew the restrictive one and said just let everyone transfer once without issue. It simplifies the bureaucracy of compliance, paperwork, etc...I think it’s not on the NCAA agenda currently or something so the earliest it could be implemented would be for the 2021 season but they wanted the conversations to be had regardless of when it could come to fruition.

There soon will be a new reason for transfer— better chance for compensation for players’ name, image, and likeness. Most programs, but for the top 10 or so, are destined for farm system/feeder program status.

My opinion:
Allow it and give choice to the player who wants to transfer from one school to another one. >
Sit a year after transferring per old rule or immediate eligibility after transfer will cause loss of redshirt year (unless medical).
If redshirt year already used, the transferring player has that year counted against his years eligible to play.
Turning the 5 years to play 4 into only a four-year timeline to play college ball.
School gave player one year to develop on a scholarship, attending classes while being a redshirt and that should be paid back somehow.

Also, not allowed follow HC or any coach that left for another program to the program coach left for.

Which would mean that there would be no other schollies available, so new recruits and development would be off the table. It's not as linear a problem as some are suggesting.

That's been tried in other industries (Wall St comes to mind) and has been shot down in arbitration and in court so many times it's well established as unenforceable. No contract can deny a person the future right to earn a living in their chosen field. Now someone can agree to not work in the field for a period of time in exchange for continued salary and benefits for that period but that's a different thing entirely.

so we can have a Michigan and Ohio state come in every year and take our best players...

sounds just great..... ( psst....this is an example of being a farm team)

Possibly, yes that is true. But many players can transfer now and get their exemptions. Amir Mitchell was an example. As far as OSU and Michigan skimming players? That goes both ways. Those teams are stocked with 4+ star players not sniffing the field and want to go elsewhere. We have benefitted with some nice transfers this year and last due to the depth of other teams and the player's lack of field time.

Why not? Why couldn't a kid follow a coach who recruited him? It's okay for the coach to leave but not the student??

The free one time transfer will hurt 2* recruits more than anyone else. Teams will now leave slots open for transfers and not give up scholarship slots to the so called projects. The MAC, AAC of the world are in real trouble. Think a guy like Carson Wentz would stay at South Dakota? For schools like us, we would only lose players like Jonah Jackson. If you are a good college player, then you would probably leave for the draft in 3 years. Assuming that first 1-2 years you are establishing yourself, it makes no sense to transfer for year 3.

"The Big Ten quietly proposed legislation last year that would allow players in every sport to transfer once in their careers without sitting out a year in residence at their new institution. If adopted, the legislation would mark one of the biggest competitive changes in the history of college sports."

No sooner than 2021 if it goes through.

I might be old school but I prefer it to be a bit more difficult to jump from one program to another, and having to sit out a year is preferable

Some aggressive head coaches at the top programs can constantly comb for talent at the lessers

It is not a healthy situation for the sport

I say let them jump, but they lose the ability to use a redshirt year or if already used can't leave program they transfer to as a grad transfer, down the road, for another program
