ESPN has secured a leaked internal BIG memo outlining the league office's blueprint for college football playoffs.
Key points:

Go to 16 teams for next two years, then to 24 by 2029.
Eliminate conference title games in 2029

5 auto bids,then top 11 for 16 bids
..just top 16 next 2 years
Next two years have bottom 4 teams play on army navy weekend, then two winners plus next 6 play next weekend, then final 8 play end of Dec bowl games.
First 2 rounds on campus
Top two have byes til bowl game round

In 2029,eliminate title games.
23 top teams plus one group of 6 bid.
No auto bids
First weekend in Dec, on campus bottom 16 play.
Next weekend,8 more on campus games.
Then final 8 play in bowls at end of month.
Last 4 play in last bowl games, then title game.

Under the 24 team setup BIG would have had 6 in,including Iowa

They need the extra playoff games to make up for lost revenue that league title games generate.
Makes sense..if we are going full NFL,might as well go whole-hog.

I wonder how conference champs will be determined if they go this route? Does it go to the team with the best record? Or would it even exist anymore?
Probably back to the "good old days" when they used tie-breakers and/or had co-champions. Which for Iowa fans means....

Most often when you dilute something you make it worse. That plan looks stupid especially taking away title games.

Let's say in 2029 Michigan and Iowa are both undefeated in league play. Are we going to go back to
co-champions. That is silly.

If this format had been in play this season Iowa would have been 5 wins away from an @EvilMonkeyInTheCloset NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!

IOWA would have opened the playoffs with Miami and IOWA, not Miami, would have been playing for the Natty!

It’s about the Natty. Like NFL, nobody cares if they won their division.

winning or tying for Big Ten would likely get a bye in playoffs and a home game. So the reward is there.

Ya know, the other thing they need to think about is once the G5 is forced out, that's gonna leave the P4 plus whatever schools are able to climb aboard the boat before it departs, significantly reducing the number of "FBS" schools to roughly 70-ish.

You probably want to go back to the “Good ol days” of bowl games and voting determing a champion. lol, so glad the dinosaurs got proven wrong. Playoffs are all that matters now, as it should be.

More and more like the NFL every year, but without things like salary caps and multi-year contracts.

I'm not sure who did the math, but it doesn't add up.
Week One: 4 teams play, 2 are eliminated leaving a total of 14.
Week Two: The two team that won plus 6 others play, meaning 4 teams lose leaving a total of 10.

Ten teams playing in week three will lead to 5 teams remaining after the games are played. Need to get to 4.
This would tell me that perhaps this leaked document wasn't leaked at all, or THE Big Ten has some real idiots at the helm, which could be true.

You are right..I'm the idiot cuz I was incorrect in my info.
S/b:
1st round seed 13 vs 16 and 14 vs 15
2nd round : 12 teams play with top 2 on byes
Round 3- 6 winners plus 2 bye teams play.
Round 4- final 4 play...ect

I thought the purpose of the playoff was to determine the proven best team in college football.

Question: Why on God's green earth do we need 24 teams to do that?

Answer: We don't, but money is the most important element of major college football- just in case you haven't been paying attention the last few years.

Why do we need 68 college basketball teams to determine a national champion. When was the last time a 16 seed ever won a natty. Never. Just can them.
