ole miss can do it, but it would just bring further attention to their name, the rebels, and their recent past. as a matter of fact, if we did it, it would really point the focus on them and the cancel culture would rain down on them like none have seen. i loath cancel culture, but if im an ole miss rebel, i wouldnt sleep at night. the cancel culture wolves are at the door and they are only getting louder, stronger, and the pack is growing.

Can they do anything? I think the deadline to drop bills passed long ago, and I don't think the leadership can just suspend rules without a 2/3's vote. The best they can do is I think finish up the session so that Tate can then call a special session to address the flag. Not a parliamentarian though, so maybe I'm missing an option. Or maybe there is still a placeholder bill out there that they can hijack for a flag change.
Correct, it would take 2/3rds right now.

He can issue an executive order that it not be displayed in government locations. That would probably appease a lot of folks (including the NCAA and SEC folks) and buy Tater time to address changing it.

It makes too much sense to do this, which is probably why he hasn't.
We quit flying it on campus a while back.

If state government leadership doesn't act almost immediately, our SEC athletic programs and the local economies they support will be destroyed for a decade or more. As someone said, NCAA immediate eligibility waivers will be handed out like candy over this issue, and soon. Not that this is the reason that we should be doing what is morally correct. But if that's what it takes, then so be it. Their resistance and inability to see the whitewater ahead for our state it astoundingly ignorant. And they want to die on the hill of the Confederate battle flag?!? Unbelievable.

Marcus Murphy also not playing.

No foosball being played this season anyway. Let 'em walk.

Not gonna hurt my feelings. I'm kinda tired of these drama queens anyway. You change the flag and they'll just ***** about something else. They walked by these things hundreds of times and didn't bat an eye until someone told them to be offended by it.

Oh well...GIT YUR DOWNVOTE ON, BOYZ!

I'm aware of this. It was a university decision. I'm saying Tate can make an executive order to quit flying it state-wide. It would be front page news and he could do it today.

I disagree on this one Drebin. If you want change - Kylin and a lot of other African-Americans hold some big bargaining chips. It sucks for us as fans. But I guarantee you if there isn't college football because of this, I will be more pissed at our state government than the players standing up for something they believe in.

I've got no problem with wanting to change the flag. I support changing it too. So does the university he plays for. His target is misdirected.

And FYI, Tate can't do anything. He can't unilaterally change the flag. The legislature can though and then Tate could either sign the bill into law or veto it.
Our anger should be at Gunn and delbert.

Genuinely asking... but what did Gunn do? All I've seen is that he not only has come out and support changing the flag but also believes it should be the legislature that gets it done

It's really not. I guarantee you that if all of the MSU and UM football players don't show up for practice in August and issue a statement that they're not practicing or playing until the flag is changed, the flag will be changed before the season starts.

I am amazed at how many of you:

1) thinks Tate Reeves or any other Legislator reads sports message boards like this.

2) think they give a crap what a small sample size of a fan base think.

You want change?

Take off from work without pay for the next 4 days and go stand 10,000 people as one in front of the Legislatures building and stand there yelling “change the flag” until they acknowledge you are even out there.

Head on down there! Call for police presence to keep things from getting out of hand though. The same dang 100 or so of us post on this board and want the Flag changed but that message ain’t getting to the “Changers”.

Good

I support Kylin and any of the participating athletes in their attempt at changing the flag. I hope many athletes across the state join him on the cause.

The flag hurts Mississippi. Voting to keep the flag is a vote against our best interest.

I know State isn't flying the state flag on campus, but could Keenum completely ban the flag from campus? That would show that MSU is doing all they could do.

Such a horrible, cowardly argument. Under that logic you recognize that the flag should be replaced, presumably because you recognize the intractable fact that it represents an institution of owning people like chattel, but you choose to do nothing, fearing other, currently unidentified symbols may be removed. At least the racists are standing for something.

Which is why it's really annoying that Hill pitched a hissy fit on twitter. He's might have to either go back on his claim or leave, b/c I don't think the NCAA or SEC's actions are going to get 2/3rds vote right now, and I'm not sure Tate is going to call a special session. I think a special session is "only" around $80k for the first day and then $50k for each day thereafter, but if we won't be missing out on any fall events and can get a vote in the next regular session before any deadlines for spring sports, then I think Tate can probably justify not calling a special session for it.

what if we just drop the flag all together? if tater doesnt want to tell people what the flag should be, just dont give anyone an option and drop the flag altogether. we dont HAVE to have a flag.

kids all over the country that get assigned Mississippi's flag will think it looks like this:

We were warned about Tate and voted him in anyway.

We didn't. Registered Republican here. This among many other reasons is why Reeves did not receive my support and it is a shame that rank and file voters just went with it because of the (R) by the name. Wish I could say I'm surprised.

BS. Tate Reeves bullied the legislature as LT Guv and if you don't think he still isn't the most influential person in that branch of government than you are mistaken. If he wants it changed, the rest will fall in line.

Not sure what he wants miss state to do. Cohen was all over the radio this morning campaigning. I guess Maybe we could refuse to play any games until the state leaders act.

I support Kylin Hill for using his platform (and will any OM player, as well) but this is my big issue, too. And it’s directed at the SEC, more than the athletes. What else can Ole Miss and MSU do? They’ve both denounced the flag and don’t fly it on campus or at any events. They’re being held accountable for something they gave little to no control over.

However, with that said - nothing motivates Mississippi voters like MSU or OM sports. So, the elected officials are fixing to jump on the bandwagon and pretend it’s all their idea.

Need a bunch of black OM players to say they will sit out if we really want something done. Just a fact that there are many more legislators with OM ties than there are those with MSU ties.

I wish this was true, but I don’t believe it is anymore. Kylin Hill is also the most productive, and probably the most known player returning for either school. He’s also a senior, with bonafide NFL potential, which matters here. He can sit out this season and likely still be drafted. NFL scouts don’t mind a RB taking one less year of abuse. But, make no bones about it.. Ole Miss players will follow suit. And they’ll get what they desire, and good for them!

If they don’t, then there will be a lot of representatives regretting their decisions when Kylin Hill, and many others, are running wild for schools not in MS next year.

counterpoint. I'll imagine you have some OM supporting legislators who'd be more than happy for KH and MM to sit out this year. Again, while admirable, his argument is misdirected

NCAA has said as long as current flag is recognized as an official flag, nothing changes from their stance. Plus, Universities across the state haven’t flown the flag on campus in 6 years, so that kind of EO wouldn’t change anything As far as NCAA is concerned.

Hill can do what he wants, obviously.
And the flag should be changed(decades ago), obviously.

Its odd that Hill is suddenly taking this stand. He grew up in MS and signed with MSU all while the current flag was the official flag of the state. Why is it now suddenly offensive or too insulting to him?

He said he is tired of it. Just odd timing to suddenly be tired of it, especially when it isnt flown on his university's campus since before he enrolled.

Oh well- he has his reasons. It will be unfortunate to see him not play, but that would be quite the statement too. I assume he will move out of the state at that point too since that would make sense.

It has been removed from our campus since the state failed to vote it out in 2001. I cannot tell you the last time I saw one on our college campus.

I rarely listen to sport podcasts that get political but the Thunder and Lightning coverage on this topic was pretty spot on. We have state flowers. Give it a listen.

One thing Tate hates worse than having to step up and take ownership of changing the flag, is being told what to do. His arrogance doesn’t respond well to being told what to do. And his lack of leadership has led to exactly that. He can Choke on it.

I'd bet he senses the momentum and realizes if there was any time to push the flag issue, now is that time.

I think it would be awesome to see a large group of MS athletes come together in unison over this issue. I completely support their efforts and applaud them for taking a stand.

And yes, the flag should have been changed long ago.

Yes. That makes since. No need for players to come back to live in Mississippi they decide they cannot play for a University who many years ago removed to flag they are supposedly protesting against. Neither side is handling this correctly. Stand united with one voice against the flag. But also stand with your teammates both black and white and play the game to win....IF you have any pride in your School.

17 that ****. We're probably not going to have a football season anyway but this is no way to handle his problem with the flag. He is a high profile player so he could have spoke out against it w/o the threat of hurting the school that gave him a scholarship.
