Big Ten's Petitti: No support for SEC's at-large bid preference for College Football Playoff

By EDDIE PELLS,AP National WriterJuly 22, 2025

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Big Ten commissioner doubled down on the league's preference for multiple automatic qualifiers in the next version of the College Football Playoff on Tuesday, increasing the likelihood of a showdown with the Southeastern Conference when the format for 2026 is decided.

At the league's football media days, Tony Petitti said any change that adds at-large bids and increases the discretion and role of a selection committee — a format the SEC and others have shown a preference for — “will have a difficult time getting support of the Big Ten.”
Petitti also bolstered the idea of a weekend's worth of play-in games for what — under one of the best-known proposals — would be four automatic bids for the Big Ten and SEC in a 16-team playoff, even though the games could put the Big Ten's top-seeded teams in jeopardy of being shut out of the CFP. The playoff expanded to 12 teams last season.

“There are 18 members in the Big Ten, you have 17 possible opponents and you play nine,” Petitti said. “There's a lot of discrepancy. Let alone making comparisons across leagues, there's a lot of issues about how you compare teams inside the Big Ten. ... Where we came down is we were willing to take that risk.”

Though there is a Dec. 1 deadline for expanding the playoff for 2026, Petitti said he wouldn't put any deadline on it, echoing a sentiment SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey voiced earlier this month when he said the 12-team format could stay in place until the two leagues agree on something new.

Petitti said recent meetings between Big Ten and SEC athletic directors have produced good results and he expects another such summit would do the same.

“The goal would be to bring people back together, have a conversation about what we think works, then kind of go from there,” he said.

The Big Ten and SEC will ultimately decide the new format, with input from the Atlantic Coast and Big 12 conferences, along with Notre Dame and the six smaller conferences who are part of the system.

Also on Tuesday, ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said his preference was one with five automatic bids and the rest at-large.

“Fairness and access should also be part of the equation,” Phillips said, while backing the work of the selection committee that would have a bigger role with 11 at-large selections to sort through.

The Big Ten is on the right track. The more you can limit the role of a biased comittee, the better off the sport is. Look at the history of committees choosing teams for the football and basketball playoffs. It ain't pretty. Take as much as possible out of any committee's hands. And if the SEC doesn't like it, you know it must be a good idea.

"Seven different schools placed students on this year’s preseason honors list . . . " A couple of things: (1) Seven different schools? How different are they? Maybe just "Seven schools." And (2) "Students?" Why not "athletes" or, at least, "student-athletes"? Referring to award-winng football players as "students" seems a tad odd. After all, they weren't named Phi Beta Kappa or even scholastic all Big Ten.

Comments that caught my ear:

Mike locksey, MD coach openly admitting he lost his locker room last season resulting in a disappointing 4 win season. He added that he made a mistake paying a frosh more than some deserving vets. Said he is parking his desk in the locker room this year.

I predict they struggle again and despite his solid recruiting, he will be fired

Matt Rhule, Nebraska coach was asked about close losses he tossed out the only school he mentioned in his podium time.
" No doubt the Iowa loss was very painful but that motivated us thru out the off-season"

Not saying hawks are living rent-free in his head but I think he does consider it a true rivalry now

LOLZ. Look at the game stats. A walk on QB who did nothing but the one short throw to KJ who blasted the distance for a TD, otherwise nothing and they got beat.

Never got the whole thing with Loxley. He's always been a below average coach who was supposedly a pretty shady recruiter as an assistant. I guess M must have thought his "culture" would help them land a lot of that DMV talent. He's done pretty well recruiting, but as a HC hes' not up to the level of most of his peers in the B1G. I hope they do keep him though, because like Illinois, Maryland is a school that could make some noise if they ever hire THAT guy.

Exactly. That's why I cringe at the very notion of dropping back to eight conference games. You miss too many Big Ten opponents as it is.

I also hope we rarely see re-matches in the B1G Championship game. Last season, luckily, Penn State & Oregon had not played in the regular season (Oregon would then beat PSU in Indy, 45-37)

Probably the fact they lost the game while holding Iowa to 5 total 1st downs. That pain would last a long time.

As iowa fans know well or at least they claim to know well, sometimes, as in the case in 2024 between nebraska and iowa, the better team does not always win.
Welp, I would say Iowa had the advantage in Defense, Special Teams and Coaching. Nebraska advantage on offense but didn't do spectacular there and Iowa's was doggie doo offense.

Defense slight edge iowa
Offense edge Nebraska
ST push
Coaching push
In 2024 Nebraska vs iowa, the better team lost.

Did the better team lose in the 2024 ISU vs iowa game???
