Wes Miller will be the next UNC Chapel Hill coach when Hubert Davis resigns. It will either be him or Stackhouse. They have to have one of theirs who understands how the academic ******** process works and they have to have one of their own.

I fully expect Beard to replace Musselman/Oats/Pearl as the Rupp Rafters hot choice to replace Cal any day now.
This season has thrown an ice bath on the Musselman and Oats campaigns.
From my vantage point it is.
You have to be more than a good coach to survive at Kentucky. You have to have a confidence that overcomes all the coaches we have in our fan base. You have to be able to handle an overbearing and cynical media. You have to have a personality that entices yet shows no fear. You have to be an elite recruiter. There are only 1-3 places that have the pressure that Kentucky has. “We” are not an easy job. “We” will eat up and spit out anyone without all theee qualities. There are very few. We currently have one of them.
You both may be right, but you also may be wrong. Ukcatz12, you can’t say with certainty that’s the way it went down. I’ve read the police report, and it’s pretty obvious that the woman was upset/drunk/unable to control her emotions when he first got home. All she told the cops was that she ripped the glasses off his face and broke them. I seriously doubt that’s all she did. I think it’s highly likely she had more involvement in the whole incident than she initially admitted.
Having said all this, I’m not advocating Beard to be our next coach or anything. It just bothers me when people condemn others. Glass houses and all that. Just because you’ve never hit a woman (neither have I, for the record) doesn’t mean you should act high and mighty and not be open to forgiveness, as the poster I was originally responded to was acting. I mean that’s his choice, but when you aren’t able to forgive people it only hurts yourself in the long run, whether you realize it or not.
Having just hit 40, I gotta say, it seems a lot younger than it used to.
Drunk wife, verbal fighting, calling police, I don’t really care whether he hit her or not, the rest of this sordid story is enough for me to not want him as coach of my beloved program
I think we all have to decide for ourselves where our red line is. For me personally Beard has crossed mine based on everything I read about the incident. I also believe there were a few things that alluded to the fact this wasn't the first time it happened, but I don't remember specifics at this point. That said, I'm not saying everyone has to agree with me and I'm not telling anyone they have to think the same as me.
Regardless of anyone's opinion, Beard will not be considered. You can't have that particular stain and be hired by a blue blood.
He lost at home yesterday to unranked Cincinnati by 11. Doubt they will move up in the rankings to top 10 after that and they weren't in the top 10 to begin with.
if we are talking eventual Cal replacements, it starts with Tommy Lloyd and Scott Drew IMO.

Time will tell, just your opinion that it is 'lightning in a bottle.' Impressive wins over Texas A&M & Arizona this year. OP asked best young coaches around 50 so I named one. He could ride this wave out of town at the end of the year, usually how that works and get a much better job where it is easier to recruit to. When I see people like Wade, Holtmann, Pope, Golden etc mentioned who haven't even had that much success but this guy somehow isn't one of top young up and comers, I disagree with that logic. Instead of discrediting what he has done with this group, maybe try recognizing what he has done at a school such as Florida Atlantic building them up since 2018-19. Not an easy job whatsoever.
They are now in the Big 12 and have yet to play any conference games. Not only that, they have played no one in OOC.
Beard will be the next coach at UL. It has nothing to do with what went down with his wife as none of us know what happen. He is just a smart coach.
I have no interest in Todd Golden right now. That's why I said that Florida saw something in him. It mostly was a joke, given his resume.
Every time one of these threads comes up, a top young coach is based on one's arbitrary standards and oftentimes they expect the coach to have the resume of a proven championship level coach already. Simply not realistic out of a young coach at a stepping stone school. These guys are up and comers for a reason. Success has to start somewhere and everyone has a certain risk level attached to their name until they win at the new job. Even if it was a joke on Golden, sometimes it works out like Billy Donovan who had no postseason experience at Marshall. Then you have Mike White with 1 Elite 8, everything else nothing to crow about.
What had Lloyd done to be considered for UK.
I can understand looking at Drew although I don’t believe he would make it here. But he should be considered.

Yes, but Billy Donovan built Florida basketball from the ground up. At the time, hiring someone with zero resume for that school was fine. If you had two losing seasons at Florida in the 90s, your seat wasn't as hot as it is now.
Please tell us all in realistic terms what kind of resume should a top, young coach have before getting a chance at a bigger school since obviously a Final 4 and winning your conference doesn't cut it. Florida may have been a powerhouse under Billy Donovan but last time I checked they are still going the same route as they did in the 90s trying to find the next young up and comer with their past 2 hires within the last decade and no proven National Champion coaches were lining up for that job despite what Billy Donovan did in the 2000s. It is not just about Florida or Billy Donovan, just used an example of a 'zero resume' coach who made the most of his chance. According to some of you all, a Final 4 with Dusty May is 'zero resume' and there are all sorts of schools in the bottom half or better in the Power 5 conferences who would take a young coach with a Final 4.

Florida is not a blue blood, but I think they could have gone after someone with more than one tournament game under their belt. His three seasons at San Francisco he was 22-12, 11-14, and 24-10(lone NCAA Tournament appearance season). I don't think it's realistic to expect a 36 year-old to have several Elite Eights and Final Fours. However, with that little resume and that age, I think it's an awful big risk for a program of Florida's stature to expect great things from a guy that has proven nothing. The rebuilding years alone alone are a gamble.
I get that and don't disagree that one would have thought Florida has the resources to get a better coach lined up from even a lower Power 5 school with some level of success but for whatever reason the last 2 hires both have extremely young. Even some of their recent hires in football have been the same way. Like I said a few posts above, everyone has a certain risk level attached to their name until they start winning at the new job. Even a National Championship level coach may not have the same success at the next school. Pretty sure Jay Wright when he was the up and comer before his Championships during the opening at Kentucky, he was quoted saying he would be a 'fish out of water' in Lexington. Something like that back then.

As I prepare to roll over 60, it seems a lot younger than it used to.
If the pattern holds, our next coach will be good, not special. It goes: special, good, drunk (rupp, hall, sutton; pitino, tubby, bcg).
The variable is Cal may've used up 2 slots (special, average) since he's been here so long. Next hire may skip straight to drunk...Huggy Bear for the win!
Shaka Smart concerns me after getting a shot at Texas. He was able to bring in the top recruits and underachieved there with all of the resources at Texas. I believe he is where he belongs, at a smaller school where he can have success and the pressure of needing to win big is off. Hasn't made it past the 2nd weekend of the Tournament since that 2011 Final 4 run. What he is doing at Marquette or at VCU is special for that level of school. He's young but been around the block for awhile and think he is at his ceiling with Marquette which is fine for them.
