Just killing some boredom......What in your opinion is the best football rivalry in your area, conference or side of the state.......In my area i would have to say Wallace Rose-Hill vs James Kenan.....its comparable to Duke vs UNC around here literally divides homes familes and a county......had a opportunity to go to the Eastern Title game a few years back when those two played atmosphere was incredible for a high school football game

I'd have to agree with Darkhorse the 3 years in a row 13 14 15 when JK and Wallace played Eastern Final there wasn't a better game in the State. Even though we were 1-2 through that stretch it's hard to forget that atmosphere.

Hell those two could be 0-9 coming into that game and that atmosphere would still be electric thats some deep rooted hate man never seen anything like it

I don't know if we have ever both had that bad of seasons going into that game but definitely agree with that statement. Even though I don't expect JK to win against Clinton this season I am excited for the new conference and getting back to watching our teams play.

There is so much diversity in this state and different brands of football I think you would have to break up the rivalries by region. There may not be one granddaddy of them all but definitely a lot of top notch matchups each region can enjoy year in and year out.

Pisgah vs Tuscola is on my bucket list of games to see.

Games in the east, aside from WRH/JK don't measure in my opinion to the western part of the state.

Reidsville used to have a good series with Thomasville... then they said "no Mas"

Reidsville used to have a good series with Western Alamance... and I dont know what happened.

Reidsville used to have a good series with Cummings... then Alamance County got all wishy washy.

The best rivalry is the Rockingham Toilet Bowl, played yearly between Morehead and Rockingham County.

Just in my driving distance of games I would say

1. Crest vs. Shelby ( Just based on Championships alone this is a biggy)
2. Pisgah vs. Tuscola ( the whole county shuts down and it's the biggest 50/50 halftime draw I have ever seen)
3. Swain vs. Murphy ( again, championships are usually on the line when these 2 line up)
4. AC Reynolds vs. Asheville ( the conference crown is usually the prize when these 2 play)

these are in no particular order.

Well according to 72 Champion it ends and begins with Shelby vs Crest lol

Doesn't begin....just ends. Pisgah vs Tuscola is fantastic! Great atmosphere and lots of people but no real championship implications as not much happens with either program outside of that game itself. Neither has won a championship in 4 decades. This is not demeaning, just a fact.

Shelby and Crest have 37 championship appearances between the two of them with 22 state championships won. The schools are 4 miles apart. It is literally a daily feud around town...a family feud for me personally. My wife went to Crest and obviously I went to Shelby. The kids are split down the middle with 2 being Crest fans and 2 being Shelby fans. This game has everything Pisgah vs Tuscola has plus the opportunity to see two of the most elite programs in the state who are yearly state champion contenders.

I don't think you have to have championship implications to have a great rivalry. You do have to have two motivated fan bases, teams, communities, etc. that live and die for the matchup. I haven't been to most of these games, so I won't comment on which one is best, but I think the championship angle sometimes gets played up too much in these conversations.

The Pisgah-Tuscola rivalry is a case in point. I know folks from both communities, and you are just as likely to hear about this game in the middle of February as you are during the season.

Swain-Murphy is a good example of championships being present but not necessary for a rivalry. I know some Bryson City folks that won't spend money in the town of Murphy for any reason just because they hate Murphy that much, and I know the love is reciprocated. This is a game I have been to, and the tension is fantastic. Both teams waiting for the other to come out of the locker room first just to screw with each other is a nice touch.

At any rate, you can't argue with the number of championships and success in the Crest-Shelby matchup and the implications of state and conference titles will always add drama to a rivalry, I just don't think that is the end all-be all of a rivalry.

Agreed like in college football people up north may say Ohio State vs Michigan....people down south may say Iron Bowl Alabama vs Auburn out west it may be Texas vs Oklahoma or USC vs UCLA

So where do the kids go to school? Yall have school choice in Cleveland County?

Two are at Crest  middle school. The others will be headed that way soon. I've had to come around....one of the hardest things I have ever had to do....lol. The younger two that aren't there yet are the two that are on my side and say they will stay that way despite eventually going to Crest.

From the way it looks the Pisgah Tuscola is very similar to the JK WRH. Except usually a championship on the line when we play the Dogs. Added bonus hard hitting, speed all over the field. Also have been lucky because the coaching has been consistent on both sides. Ready to see how the new chapter unfolds with the new coaches.

OK according to the guidelines of this original post Shelby/Crest is the best in THEIR AREA. While it may very well be the best in all of NC (and according to 72 State Champion the entire southeast as well as his household) the question was area, conference or side of state.

In lowly Randolph county I would say it would be Eastern Randolph/Randleman followed closely by Eastern Randolph/Providence Grove.

The former matchup fueled by competition and general disdain for the other HS and the latter caused by the building of a new school which divided teammates as well as families.

Hope this post follows along the lines of what thread was intending to address.

Sorry to interrupt the Cleveland county discussion.

Never been to the USC v UCLA but have been to the other three. All unreal with big pageantry. OU v Texas at the Texas State Fair makes it extra special. Throw in Florida v Georgia in Jacksonville. Biggest by far in the Carolinas is Clemson v South Carolina. Tennessee v Alabama seems to have more hate than any of them.

Richmond v Scotland is better to me at Richmond and Shelby v Crest brings more atmosphere at Shelby fir me. Those two stadiums just seem to make the game a little better. Personal feeling only.

A couple of big rivalry games that were short lived but intense were Harding v West Charlotte in the late 1980's, Indy v Butler about ten years ago, and Albemarle v Thomasville early 2000's.

In SC Gaffney v Byrnes and Dorman v Byrnes have been huge along with South Pointe v Northwestern. Before SP opened I would have put Rock Hill v Northwestern as the biggest in the Carolinas. That one had it all!

Thomasville/Lexington was really big back in the day

Thomasville/Maiden had a good rivalry going on several years ago, seemed like every year we would meet in the playoffs
