You are off on the giving a sh## by Martinez. His problem yesterday in part is that he's not able to deliver a ball accurately and on time when he has to. He looked extremely upset with HIMSELF on at least one of the red zone failures. It APPEARED to me on some of what appeared to be zone read options, that he made the wrong decision on several plays that cost us huge plays. JMHO with one crappy TV view and little replays available.Someone call into Benning's show and ask what would have happened to a QB on any team he played on that was mentally unprepared virtually all of the time, showed regression for 2 years straight, and gave off the impression -- full time -- that he could give 2 ***** about how his unit performs on gameday.
Actually, I think you hit the nail on the head. He was concerned about missing routine throws in year 3. Upset with himself. You are off on the giving a sh## by Martinez. At some point we have to put these guys in position to be successful whether it's as simple as playing Luke more or whatever. It might do Martinez some good to sit and watch for a game or two. Luke certainly seems to have the right mindset to run a team and the team seems to react well when he comes in the game.
Martinez made some HUGE plays with his feet to bail us out of bad spots multiple times yesterday. His main issue continues to be his lack of accuracy and timing in the passing game.
Imo it started last season when teams started playing zone defense and Adrian is either hesitant to throw into the area doesn’t trust his receivers or he simply can’t read a zone in a gameYou are off on the giving a sh## by Martinez. Holy hell this is spot on. Armstrong was never going to be a top tier quarterback but he was very productive and a vocal leader for his teams. I believe Adrian has the talent to be a division one quarterback but I don’t see a lot of leadership qualities in the 60 minutes of game footage I get to see a week. I worry about this with Luke as well. It’s very early and I’m not saying the quarterback needs to be a drill sergeant....but like you said...some accountability seems to be lacking.Actually, I think you hit the nail on the head. He was concerned about missing routine throws in year 3. Upset with himself.
I'm hard pressed to name a player that holds his unit accountable on this team. Maybe Mo Barry the last couple years.
Say what you want about Tommy Armstrong -- but no way in hell does his unit put up 9 points in about the first 10 possessions against a team like we played yesterday. Yep, he got boatraced a few times by superior teams but he would have ripped someone's head off if his unit looked like our offense did yesterday.
I was hoping this season the offensive leader was going to be Wandale. Maybe it still will be.
But it sure as hell isn't going to be AM. He's on the edge of losing his position to an underclassmen, which is probably what's leading his frustration.
Monday morning for Benning. Husker Hangover is on 1620 right now every Sunday 9-11am with Matt Vrzal. Vrz always gives very good analysis in a no BS way and calls it like it is.When does Damon Benning do his breakdown of the game? I don't listen to 1620 anymore as it's horrible overall but I want to tune in to his breakdown of this game. His analysis is solid.
Spot on!Well said. The kid is struggling and conference coaches have identified and are exploiting his weaknesses. But the idea that he doesn’t care is ridiculous. He obviously plays hard and cares a lot, he just isn’t getting the job done.
I can't put it all on Martinez because most of the time we just don't have the receivers to get the job done. That being said, the most productive play we have on offense is when everything breaks down and the qb has to scramble. That being the situation, I think Luke is the better option. You are off on the giving a sh## by Martinez. sadly Adrian is to much like Taylor Martinez just slower just like Taylor Adrians best plays comes from improvising busted playsAM is incapable. He should never take another snap at NU again.

I think the true gauge on the QB coach will be if LM improves or regresses... it’s hard to say why 2AM hasn’t progressed at all, and it’s debatable on if he regressed, but before you make a call on it being the coaches or not you have to know how coachable 2AM is... all I do know at this point is that I’m not seeing any identity on offense, and no leadership from the QB position, the play where mills knocked the ball out of 2AM’s hands he should have chipped his arse every holding or false start there needs to be some *** chewing some by the QB... step up and take charge of that offense get people in place and don’t tolerate anything other than perfection while on the field... they can be friends after the game but during it he should be there to win... to me one of the biggest problems I’m seeing is on one is showing that killer mindset, WAn’del I think has it but the ball isn’t getting to him... I hope we can get this train back on the tracks but after these two games I’m not seeing much reason for hopeSo maybe last year wasn’t that much about the injury. A bigger concern for me is that this doesn’t reflect well on the coaching. AM has gone backward. Hope we see LM get better.
I don't know why teams don't take more advantage of this. Run your receivers deep, roll your quarterback out and if nothing is open have him take off and scramble. A lot of times this leads to big chunk plays, so I don't know why it has to happen on a play breakdown where you let your qb scramble.I can't put it all on Martinez because most of the time we just don't have the receivers to get the job done. I suppose the obvious answer would be that you don't want to get your qb hurt, and if you don't have legitimate deep threats then the safeties can just play the run or spy the qb.I don't know why teams don't take more advantage of this. Run your receivers deep, roll your quarterback out and if nothing is open have him take off and scramble. Its not a formula for winning a title, but maybe we could win a few games while they develop the other skill players like Thompkins and Betts. That's where I'm at. At least give yourself a chance for the big run.
Exactly. Run the option game with LMC. How much worse can it be?I can't put it all on Martinez because most of the time we just don't have the receivers to get the job done. As long as the system isn't essentially sandlot football, I like our chances at success. I like the RPO, but for some reason we just can't put the thing together.Exactly. Run the option game with LMC. How much worse can it be?

We can't hit a pass over the middle off of play action to save our lives, which made it a really good thing to try on 2nd and goal from the 3 down 8.
The point about AM not being an accurate thrower is correct. Frost and Verd recruit kids that are runners first and average at best passers with the idea that they can develop the passer. That's a lot of self confidence in something they haven't been able to do to this point. LM gets the ball out faster then AM but not with much on it. Doesn't look like the last two QB recruits are proficient passers either. Formula for failureActually, I think you hit the nail on the head. He was concerned about missing routine throws in year 3. The coaches ARE trying to put AM in a position to succeed. He can't throw an accurate ball, so they have totally abandoned throwing the ball down the field. Hell, we didn't even start a true wideout against Ohio State because of that. We started 3 guys that are good at blocking on the perimeter.
Yes, at the end of the day, it's all on the coaching. You don't want to admit that you missed on a kid, took your lumps with him for 2 years, and now it hasn't panned out and you're going to have to start over. You can get away with scheming around your QB's weaknesses if he's out front and leading the offense, and making good and timely decisions.
Like the kid that beat us yesterday.
But we don't have that.

By bad spots, I meant poor field position because of being pinned deep by punts OR being behind the chains because of false starts or holding calls. Martinez made some really good plays with his feet to get us out of those spots a couple of times only to have the drive thwarted by something else.I hate being overly critical on individual players but I also don't want to ignore what is plain to see. A lot of those bad spots you mention, Martinez regularly contributes to with his decision making or lack thereof. I want to say he redeems himself with plays that get us out of those situations but unfortunately they are few and far between. With Martinez, it is one step forward, and two steps back. He has regressed in a lot of ways from his freshman year. Last year, I was shocked, but at this point, I'm not surprised at his play, I'm just kind of sad for him and disappointed with Frost that he doesn't have the courage to make the tough calls, the right calls for the sake of the team.
The right side of the field appeared to be WIDE open for an RPO to that side. Granted the camera angle maybe didn't show me everything. That's the kind of situation where Milton at UCF would have gotten his team in a better play at the LOS for Frost. We can't hit a pass over the middle off of play action to save our lives, which made it a really good thing to try on 2nd and goal from the 3 down 8.
He did and that gave us reason to cheer. Really frustrating to see so many drives stall outBy bad spots, I meant poor field position because of being pinned deep by punts OR being behind the chains because of false starts or holding calls. screw the identity thing. We've shown that we can line up against a top 5 team and run option. We've also shown that we can put up tons of yards. It's all about executing in the red zone no matter what the scheme or play call is. Thus far the WHOLE OFFENSE hasn't gotten it done and IMO that largely falls on the guys false starting, missing blocks or failing to hit receivers in tight windows. We've had guys open enough that a D-1 QB should be able to hit them.End of thread.
No identity
Most of the time he's throwing too late IMO. Part of that is a lack of trust in the receiver being where he's supposed to be. A huge part of it is confidence. I just think it might be good for AM to sit and take some pressure off of him. I don't think pressure will be a problem for Luke. He and his brothers seem to have been bred for the game.Imo it started last season when teams started playing zone defense and Adrian is either hesitant to throw into the area doesn’t trust his receivers or he simply can’t read a zone in a game
I've wondered if AM just has a problem throwing to a spot where the receiver will be open in a void in the zone. Waiting till a guy comes open in a zone is too late many times particularly if the receiver isn't sitting down facing him. Most of the time he's throwing too late IMO. Part of that is a lack of trust in the receiver being where he's supposed to be. A huge part of it is confidence. I just think it might be good for AM to sit and take some pressure off of him. We need to hang the hat on doing your job whether it's remembering the snap count of knowing how to avoid a holding penalty. When I hear the term "identity" I just think wth does that mean? It doesn't matter what your scheme or "identity" is if you execute the plays. You want your identity to be "execution of the play that is called".No identity, nothing to hang their hat on.
Unfortunately, these type of plays are highly likely to get a penalty. Ineligible receiver downfield, holding, block in the back.....sadly Adrian is to much like Taylor Martinez just slower just like Taylor Adrians best plays comes from improvising busted plays
x1000One thing I've noticed is that we haven't found a leader on offense. He needs to take control. The team didn't like Frazier but he took complete control and they respected him for that. I admit, Frazier was one of a kind BUT he was a leader.
Yeah I get what you're saying, but we still don't have an identity. Something we do well, and can repeat. I've played and coached at the college level, I'm not just pulling this out of thin air.We need to hang the hat on doing your job whether it's remembering the snap count of knowing how to avoid a holding penalty. When I hear the term "identity" I just think wth does that mean? It doesn't matter what your scheme or "identity" is if you execute the plays. You want your identity to be "execution of the play that is called".
If you want our identity, we're a spread team running a system very similar to OSU and multiple other successful programs. I guess you could also say that our identity is a "heavily penalized team bent on self destruction by self inflicted wounds".
