Agree on the surface, but if the Texans knew they weren't going to be able to resign Hopkins to the deal he was going to demand, at least they acted early and got some return rather than waiting and losing Hopkins for nothing.

He's under contract for 3 more years.

Maybe the Texans see a drop off coming... he's dropped in yds/rec the last 2 years with last season being considerable

I don't read much into the drop off, because as you saw late in the season and post season, when they needed a big play, they were going to Hopkins and he was going to make the play if he could get his hands on the ball. I'm not sure there's a better clutch receiver in the NFL.

Sounds like some picks involved too that help even it out:

Cards get DeAndre Hopkins & 2020 4th
Texans get David Johnson, 2020 2nd and 2021 4th

This is exactly why this baffles me. He has salted away many games late the last two years with Watson. Type of stuff that doesn't show up in the box score. In return they got a 28 year old RB who lost his job to Kenyan Drake.

They see a drop off coming in a couple years, so they trade for a guy where the drop off has already happened? At the most expendable position in the NFL, no less? Simply indefensible from the Texans point of view. No two ways about it.

Well they justified it in their own minds. I have no idea what they're thinking, but they have a plan, I'm sure. They cleared some salary, so they have their eye on someone
