If what is true? That the uncle asked Frost to move Spielman? That doesn't change what I am talking about. Guys who are elite at what they do have both big egos and low self esteem. They need a lot of validation, even when they win or are playing well. Asking a coach for a guaranteed starting spot is the same thing.

While camps don't determine playing time, in many cases they determine who recruits you. Guys afraid of competition will let their high school stats talk for them, they don't seek out Elite 11 camps or go to an Opening regional camp.
People with low self esteem are typically afraid of competition.

As I have said, in my experience in dealing with athletes that have competed at the power 5 level in football, softball and basketball, they don't run from competition. Their egos need a constant reminder of how good they are, or that they are doing great, but very, very few, are afraid to compete with another athlete.

Well my experience coaching kids who have played at he power 5 level differs from yours. I understand that kids want to play, but if what is true actually happened in this case, then the athlete is in fact afraid or they feel entitled to start, imo. In a lot of cases when kids transfer it is because they are afraid they will not get to play.

I disagree, these kids are harder on themselves than most of their coaches will be. They hate to be shown up and will bust their *** to not be shown up. Going to a school with a short depth chart at your position doesn't mean you are afraid to compete. Again, low hanging fruit.

We can agree to disagree.

What does transferring have to do with it? At that point they have already competed and lost. Most starters don't leave. But that is different than being afraid to compete.

Feeling entitled is not the same as afraid to compete. If I am up for two coaching jobs and the job at the school that doesn't have a great history offers me more money so I take that job, doesn't mean I am afraid to compete, it means I want more money. I can negotiate with the other school, but in the end I am going with the money. Same with athletes, just because they go to a "lesser school" or go with the school that guarantees playing time, that doesn't mean they don't want to compete, they just like the safety of the guarantee.

Well I disagree on most of these accounts, but that is OK. Kids can go a play for whoever. I just like kids like Ben Stille who turns down a blackshirt because he feels like he has not lived up to the standard over a kid who supposedly wanted Frost to move one of his best players to secure his commitment.

Well, what would be the problem? If he is good enough to take JD's spot, go for it :p I mean I'm sure our staff would take who is likely to be if not the best one of the top 2 or 3 best receivers we've ever had and bench him for a freshman who has never taken a snap in college. What could possibly go wrong with that?
If he's good enough to EARN JD's spot, then OK. To say he wants to "TAKE" it--NFW. To me the original post sounded like he was just going to "take it". Spielman is one of our brighter spots on the team.
