Its a reminder that those who make athletics their profession do not share the same perspective as we the fans. They might be every bit as enthusiastic, as passionate, and as dedicated, but that devotion by necessity is not permanent. Or maybe a better analogy is they might put roots down but they put them down in a container and not into the ground where they are located. Even one of our own demonstrated that distinctly a couple of years ago.

I think we fans tend to unconsciously assume that our undying devotion to our alma mater or favorite team is shared by those who lead its sports programs. It is not. I say this not to imply that they do not care or that we can't trust those who lead our programs but just to remind that this relationship is usually temporary and it actually goes both ways. What I mean by that is we support our alma mater and generally there is nothing that will ever change that. We also might support our coaches but that does change and quickly when they stop winning. Conversely, coaches can truly be devoted to the institution they serve but that also can change quickly when things sour or a better opportunity comes along.

Not understanding this principle is why fans get butt hurt when a coach or AD leaves but it is also why such feelings are a little hippocritical and for this accusation, I'm afraid I must point the finger back at myself as well.

When it's all broken down to its bare essentials......it is a job. Same principles apply to anyone who aspires to move higher whether financially or otherwise in any profession. It's kind of like its not really personal, just business

This is why the measure of a program is the amount of fans that show up, and the culture they create.

Fans that insist that you should stop coming to games to 'prove a point' to the AD are the reasons that particular program never moves forward. The coach you attract is a result of the culture you create. We got a hired gun in Mullen. Mullen motivated our fanbase to show up, which is what we needed at the time, but he was never one of us. Moorhead could be more of an MSU type guy, as long as we embrace him, but we are really off to a bad start.

Honestly from what I've seen of ADs, they see the money coaches get and they want to strike it rich as well. 17 loyalty.
