Neither were good enough to get JJs mins last year. But you are correct, it is what it is.
I just want to add that while JJ played point and two last year, Noah and Williams only played at the three. I think I can guarantee that both can defend at the two better than JJ did at both positions. And while it is possible that one or both would turn the ball over more or shoot worse...no, after thinking about it, it is not possible. Not what you'd design in a lab but better at just the two guard reserve position than last year.

I will never understand why some of you choose to be absolutely miserable about a season that doesn’t start for nearly a month. I bet your doctors love you though as the stress you create for yourselves definitely hurts your health.

Keep being miserable. I’m sure those around you appreciate it.

So our only backup is a poorly ranked freshman. Just great.
Well he’s a four star that has good shooting numbers.
During his senior campaign, Williams averaged 15.1 points, 5.3 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals. He shot 60 percent from the field, 41 percent from 3-point range and 89 percent from the foul line. In perhaps the most notable outing of his senior year, Williams had 23 points, five rebounds and five assists as Tennessee Collegiate Academy upset No. 1 ranked Prolific Prep in November.

Milan said Mason is the third best shooter on the staff. Nancies, start your panic!!!
We are going to need him to be more than a shooter to be an effective point guard. I really hope he lives up to the hype but he looked like the worst defender I saw on the floor at Pro Day. I figured he’d be better on that side of the ball, but he is a freshman. His dad wasn’t a good defender but was at least scrappy and assignment sound.

That being said, it was just a scrimmage. He may be Tony Allen for all I know… but I doubt it.

Who is the 3rd? I assume you mean the 3 star freshman. Sure, he could be good, but that seems like wishful thinking. Are any other top teams relying on such a player as the only guard off the bench?
Keaton Wagler of the Illinois Fighting Illini went from an under-recruited consensus three-star high school prospect (ranked around No. 261 nationally) to one of the greatest freshman breakout stars in college basketball history during the 2025–26 season. [1, 2, 3]

Key Freshman Achievements
  • Scoring & Stats: Averaged 17.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game while setting the Illinois freshman scoring record with 663 total points.
  • Historic Performance: Set the Big Ten freshman single-game scoring record with 46 points in a win at Purdue on January 24, 2026.
  • March Madness Run: Scored 25 points in the Elite Eight against Iowa to lead Illinois to their first Final Four appearance since 2005.
  • Awards: Named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, consensus All-America Second Team, and winner of the Jerry West Award.
  • NBA Draft: Declared for the 2026 NBA Draft after his freshman season and was selected 5th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers. [1, 2, 3, 4]

I think as bad as JJ was most of the time last year, that’s team was bad enough that if either of them could’ve handled the role they’d have been given an opportunity. There’s a reason they never played the two last year when the team lacked guard play. It’s just not what their skillset allows. It’s a lot tougher than you make it out to be. Chandler was far better suited for that role, and he struggled when it was him as the secondary handler. If you can’t dribble it’s hard to play that spot. (Yes, I know they can dribble, but so can my 7 yr old).

No he’s not a poorly ranked freshman
He was about the 125th ranked player in his HS class. He’s currently the first and only guard off the bench as a true freshman. For that role, his ranking is most certainly poor. The obvious hope (learning to hate that word in regards to UK basketball) is that he plays above that ranking.

I know this is an odd concept for you folks that only see black and white, but it’s completely possible to think this team isn’t going to be very while also not being stressed about it.

It can certainly be done. But like JQ coming back in record time from an ACL injury, it’s not very likely.

I’m assuming he’s out months at least. Very weird with a local kid we haven’t gotten a leak of the actual injury.

He’s been moving poorly with that big brace every time I’ve seen him on tv ever since.

Think if you’re Pope/Brown, you have to prepare yourself for a possible mid season guard addition. Not necessarily because of Morton alone, but if one of the starting backcourt get hurt you have to have some kind of competency to give the rest of your roster a chance.

(I’ve been telling folks for months that Kam and Braydon would get some minutes at the 2 and this all but guarantees it)

We will need him to be a combo guard. Both Zoom and Alex can play PG.

Month? Try weeks. And we’re already dealing with a potential season-long injury of a major backup piece. That’s not something you can write off. We have zero depth at the 1 and 2 right now. We can’s expect Wilkins and Zoom to play 40 minutes a game. We’ve vulnerable when either one of them are off the court.

This is the problem everyone is having with this coming season: we have to expect every single one of our players to be perform beyond their expectations. This is such an underdog mentality. We do it in football because we’re a perennial doormat in the SEC. Basketball is expected to be elite Every. Single. Year.

I really don’t care. Hell it’s probably even better for the program overall if he doesn’t play this year. They weren’t winning a title even if 100% healthy all year so let’s just rip the bandaid off, lose 14 games and fire Pope. I just hope the new coach can keep Milan here next year. I want to see him playing here under a good coach for a title contender.

What he said is probably exactly what’s coming except maybe the Kansas win. Pope will win a few nobody expected which will bring the pumpers out beating their chest. He will also drop 5-6 games he has no business losing and will finish with about 12-15 losses. I just pray Batt has the balls to fire him.

The only thing I didn’t agree with in his post was the Jai Lucas part. I absolutely don’t want him. We can’t afford another “might be good” hire. This one has to be a homerun or UK is going to start losing a lot of fans and money support that they won’t get back. Lucas hasn’t done near enough or proven he can win at the level required here.

This current stretch of bad basketball is now longer than what we went through under Tubby and Billy. People’s attention span and patience are now shorter than ever and we are a decade from a FF nearly 15 years since a title. Plus with Stein looking like he might do special things this fanbase is going to start putting all their money and attention to football.

Nobody is going to make those excuses this year. He'll either win big with what he's got or he'll be out.
I'm going to hope for the best and be completely open to us surprising everyone and playing above projections, but... if the season is "just ok" and we finish somewhere 4-8 in the SEC, have 10+ losses and lose in the first or second round of the NCAA tournament, I hope to god we have the foresight/courage to cut bait rather than rolling the dice on one more year. I also hope that J. Batt has a list of names with back channels and feelers out to agents which is just basic AD due diligence when a coach is facing a year like the one Pope has coming up.

This is why it's so hard to listen to the "you must be fun at parties" types in here. I'm completely open to us flipping the expectations on their head, but doing that is going to be like winning a 10 team parlay bet in that EVERYTHING has to go perfectly to have a chance.

When we got Morton most said bad pickup and he wouldn’t play much. Now it’s a huge loss. Can’t be both. Kam can easily play the 2 defensively. Offensively we would just go to a more PG/C focused zoom for the minutes he would be at the 2. We would also be extremely long and big at those times causing problems defensively and rebounding offensively hopefully. Zoom and Alex will play 30+ mins a piece. That’s around 20 mins that have to be played by others. Not a big deal. Most say pope doesn’t need to sub out the main guys anyway. So there you go.

Unrealistic and don’t see it happening as this is his best team, maximum of 10 losses imo

Who is Kentucky level to you? Because if for some reason they did fire pope we’d be lucky to actually get a coach with the credentials you want

Agreed. We should be looking, on a standard night, at something like:
Diallo 32-35min / M.Williams 5-8min
Wilkins 32-35min / Noah & K.Williams & Hawthorne? 5-8min
Momcilovic 32-35min / K.Williams 5-8min
N'Diaye 20-35min / McBride 5-20min
Moreno 32-35min / Kepnang & Potter 5-8min
